Lost Tycoon presents an unvarnished, in-depth portrayal of the man who vows to "Make America Great Again." Although first published in 1993, Lost Tycoon shows us that The Donald's personal character, political philosophy, business ethics, and attitude towards women haven't changed much in the past two decades.
Trump is a man of many lives. He is arguably the greatest self-promoter in the annals of American business. After inheriting a fortune, he made and lost billions in real estate and casino gambling, rising phoenix-like from his own ashes. He is a reality television show star, a father, a grandfather, and an alleged rapist. In Hollywood terms, he has literally been the producer and director of his own biopic--a real life "Citizen Kane" --whose father hammered the same lines into his head when was a little boy: "You are a killer . . . you are a king . . . you are a killer . . .you are a king."
Harry Hurt has created a cinema veritE-style narrative which allows the words and actions of the principals to speak for themselves. It is indisputable that Donald's exploits in business, entertainment, and politics prove that he is--to borrow a metaphor from Fred Trump Sr.--"a killer." Reading this important biography about the real Donald Trump will help you to make an informed and engaged choice as to whether he is worthy of being "king."
Harry Hurt III is an award-winning print journalist, a former New York Times columnist, a former correspondent for Newsweek, a video journalist, and the author of six nonfiction books, including Texas Rich, a bestselling biography of the H.L. Hunt oil and silver dynasty. Hurt spent nearly three years researching and writing Lost Tycoon. He interviewed Donald Trump and observed him in action in New York City and Atlantic City. He reviewed thousands of pages of court documents and interviewed well over 100 people, including some of the most trusted confidants in the infamous Donald-Ivana-Marla love triangle that made front page tabloid headlines.

Why are so many people writing "interim" biographies of Trump? Presumably because Trump is a flamboyant case of truth being sometimes stranger than fiction and because there is a vast audience for whom his every move is of enormous interest. One hesitates to use the word biography to describe this book. It is more a roundup of what is known to date about the famous financier and playboy, culled from a variety of sources. The chances are that most readers already have seen or heard, somewhere and sometimes in spite of themselves, most of what Hurt has to report. Right now, Trump seems to be down. Will he remain there? Stay tuned. Someone will be sure to let us know. Best to wait until the requests mount up before adding this one to the collection. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 1/93.

A deliciously wicked take on casino/real-estate mogul Donald J. Trump. Drawing on a wealth of sources, Hurt (For All Mankind, 1988, etc.) offers an exhaustive, gossipy rundown on a golden boy of the so-called greed decade who lost his touch--and way--in the hard realities of the 1990's. Capitalizing on political contacts made by his father, who amassed a fortune building and managing apartment houses for working-class residents of N.Y.C.'s outer boroughs, the erstwhile Wunderkind made a flashy name for himself in Manhattan property development. Moving on to Atlantic City's glittery gambling dens, the cocksure Trump (who turns 47 this June) took a great fall when his faith in ever-rising asset prices proved unfounded. In the wake of an acrimonious divorce that ended a 13- year marriage to the Czech-born Ivana (inducing bankers to review Trump's balance sheet with greater care), the ambitious hustler's leveraged empire and its trophy holdings now languish in undeclared bankruptcy. While Hurt doesn't wholly dismiss the possibility of a comeback, he leaves little doubt that Trump is bucking tough odds. Nor does the author overlook many opportunities to dish the dirt on his subject's star-crossed personal life and dubious business practices. Cases in point range from the Trump family's long- standing ties to organized-crime figures through The Donald's fling with Marla Maples; inability to weigh a deal's downside risks against its potential rewards; midnight demolition of a Manhattan landmark; and world-class talent for manipulation. Lacking the insider's edge of John R. O'Donnell's Trumped! (1991)--but, still, a slick, informed account of an upstart wheeler-dealer whose brass may be exceeded only by his reach. This is an important, highly charged expose of Trump's past
By J. Roslyn
The Lost Tycoon is an exhaustive depiction of Trump's scams, cons and lies. Here are just a few take aways:
- [ ] Trump used illegal labor from Poland to tear down the old building on the site where Trump Towers would be built. The laborers slept on the construction site, and many were never paid. (And they destroyed the Art Deco statues and grill work in order to meet the construction deadlines. Trump apparently ordered this destruction, despite promising to preserve the statues, etc.)
- [ ] Trump Plaza, in Atlantic City, met its state minority contractor quota by listing Mike Tyson as a minority contractor.
- [ ] Trump used Damin Aviation to ferry himself and others back and forth to Atlantic City. Joe Weichselbaum headed it up until he was indicted on illegal drug smuggling (Hurt wonders if there was any truth to the rumor that Weichselbaum procured cocaine for Trump's casino high rollers). Then the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) forced Weichselbaum out. Weichselbaum pled guilty and was sent to prison. A year later, Weichselbaum's girlfriend paid $2.35 million for two apartments in Trump Towers, claiming the money was her own. When Weichselbaum was paroled, he moved into the apartments (now a duplex) and told the parole board he was going to be Trump's helicopter consultant.
- [ ] In 1989, three of Trump's top Atlantic City executives were killed in a helicopter crash following a meeting with Trump. Upon hearing of their deaths, Trump told a colleague that he couldn't resist milking the deaths for publicity. He then falsely claimed he was supposed to be on that flight.
- [ ] Ivana worked hard at Trump's hotels and casinos, despite his constant attempts to belittle her work (during their famous divorce, he once claimed she stayed home and did the laundry).
- [ ] The book reports on Ivana's divorce-deposition testimony where she claimed that Trump violently raped her and tore out chunks of her hair because he believed her plastic surgeon had harmed him by performing a poor scalp reduction surgery. He was in great pain, and he blamed Ivana. Ivana disclaims the rape in a letter inserted in the beginning of the book. In it she claims that her use of the term "rape" only meant that Trump was "not loving" to her.
Story after story about Trump's temperament fill this book. Trump seems to have lurched from one temper tantrum to the next, from one lie to the next, from one con to the next. He claimed his wife and children were important to him, but business and money seem to always have been his true love. As set out in this book, there are two constants with regard to Trump's personality: if the truth doesn't suit Trump, he changes it, and he will not tolerate criticism of any kind. This is an important, highly charged expose of Trump's past. Unfortunately, it only covers Trump's life up until the early 1990's. Nonetheless, this is a book that should be read by voters in this election year.
(Although I read a Kindle Unlimited version of this book, as of the date of this review, this version has been pulled by Amazon. Accordingly, this review is being placed under the out-of-print version of the book.)

Worthwhile Page Turner
By Bill Gallagher
Normally I would not read a book about Trump, but given his Republican nomination for president, I'm really glad I did. First, it makes for compelling reading. Although it is written in a bit of a breathless style (especially at the beginning), that style fits with the Donald's hyper, look-at-me-NOW, materialistic, tabloid life--which he cultivates. I didn’t want to put it down.
Second, this book gives a really valuable look at the Real Donald (it’s ironic that his Twitter tag is #RealDonaldTrump). It was written before Trump was a political figure, so the author had no political agenda. That's lack of political agenda gives it more credibility about the real DT who is revealed in this book.
Most humans have a public persona that is different than who we really are. Think of how messy Trump's public persona is, well beneath that facade really ain't pretty. There are sooo many juicy (and ultimately tragic) examples of Donald being an ugly human being. If you read this book, and still think he should be president, I have a very very overpriced real estate seminar to sell you. This book makes clear that Trump is too unstable to be president (Lost Tycoon recounts at least a couple times the Donald was feeling suicidal--an obviously very dangerous quality for a president.)

Dated but unbiased biography of Trump
By Dave Shumway
Old story of Trump written in the 90s and republished recently with new forward. Not biased nor emotional. Show Trump to be the narcissist and sociopath he is. His life is a Ponzi scheme in all spheres.
