Amazon.com Review
Ben Hogan's premise in this 1957 classic is driven home in bold letters: "THE AVERAGE GOLFER IS ENTIRELY CAPABLE OF BUILDING A REPEATING SWING AND BREAKING 80." Religions are founded on less, and Hogan's detailed analyses and illustrated demonstrations of grip, stance, posture, and the two basic components of the swing make up a sacred book. Though its very simplicity seems dated, this is the tome of technique that should serve as the foundation of every golf library.

Review
Jim Fogerty Professional, Sunset Country Club, St. Louis Most articles on golf deal only in theory, but Ben is to be congratulated on probably the most practical series on golf instruction ever written.

Timothy E. Sick Calgary After reading the first two articles, I had a 73 for the first time in my life, and hadn't played for six months before that.

Frank Sadler Professional, Bellingham Country Club, Bellingham, Washington It's the first time words and illustrations have made golfing technique absolutely clear. I'm applying the lessons to my teaching program here and highly recommending them to my pupils. I'd say it's the greatest instruction series of all time. Women are particularly keen on it. It'll make a lot of new golfers -- good golfers.

About the Author
Ben Hogan discovered golf as a fifteen-year-old caddie. He turned pro at seventeen, joined the tour full-time as a nineteen-year-old in 1931, and has won nine pro majors. A four-time PGA Player of the Year, he is one of only four golfers to win all four professional majors. At forty-one, he won five of six tournaments, including the Masters, U.S. Open and the British Open. Hogan died at eighty-four in 1997 in his home in Fort Worth.

A great read with excellent graphics!
By John Stewart
Hogan's book is a short, but comprehensive analysis of the golf swing. His stated purpose of giving the average weekend golfer the tools to develop a repeatable golf swing has, in my opinion, been met. The fundamentals he espouses are few, and simple enough to implement without causing one to overthink. I found his views about grip and stance, and their importance in setting up the rest of the swing, particularly helpful. If you're a student of the game, this book is a prerequisite before reading the multitude of expert analyses of Hogan's swing that are available elsewhere. The advanced golfer interested in developing his/her knowledge of shaping shots and ball flight won't find information here. But if you're like me and want to develop better consistency of contact with all your clubs and eliminate anxiety as you stand over the ball, then this book is for you.

Excellent for New Golfers - Learn Good Habits Early
By MTE
I can't rate this book highly enough for new golfers.

I started with golf approximately 2-3 weeks ago. The most "golf" I played before was mini-golf and, of course, Wii Golf.

I played nine holes and went to the driving range. I was terrible, as expected. Inconsistant, my back hurt after, and I probably shot an 80...in nine holes.

I bought this book, determined to not build bad habits.

I read the book in a night For a week, I practiced my grip, posture, and swing. I went to the driving range and it was night and day. I still have a LONG way to go, but the improvement was remarkable and noticeable.

The book is well written. Hogan's instructions are easy to follow and there are many illustrations included. Hogan did a great job explaining the "why" for grip, position, etc. He also gave sage advice when you notice a problem. Don't focus on the problem alone. There's a reason in your swing why it is happening. At first, I shrugged off the idea of keeping a notebook when I golf, but I now see the reason. Ben Hogan doesn't need my endorsement as a great golfer, but he has it.

Much more interesting than I had envisioned an instructional on golf to be...
I bought and read this to be a helpful and supportive wife as my husband learns a new sport. I wanted a bit of instruction for myself as well in the unlikely event that I ever went with him.
The end result was that I am very interested in learning myself now. The instruction and illustrations in this book were excellent. It was all well organized and detailed without being complicated.
It also makes the sport sound so much more interesting, fun and inclusive of grace and choreography of movement than I had imagined.

Micromachining Using Electrochemical Discharge Phenomenon, Second Edition: Fundamentals and Application of Spark Assisted Chemical Engravin

Micro-machining is an advanced manufacturing technique of growing importance, and adoption of micro-machining using electrochemical discharges (Micro-ECDM) has increased steadily in recent years. Among new developments is the interest of industry in Micro-ECDM. However, the potential of the technology is not being fully utilized and there is no comprehensive reference book available today covering it. Micromachining Using Electrochemical Discharge Phenomenon, Second Edition fills this gap. It is unique in its detailed coverage of all aspects of the Micro-ECDM process, as well as Spark Assisted Chemical Engraving (SACE). As such, it covers technologies such as chemical etching, micro-drilling, and other material removal mechanisms, high aspect ratio machining, design and construction of the machining apparatus, and a wide range of applications. The new edition compares Micro-ECDM and SACE with other micromachining technologies such as laser machining and traditional EDM. ECDM is used for machining of electrically non-conductive materials. Micro-ECDM/SACE is mainly applied to glass and the book focuses on glass, but the authors also present new results on other materials such as ceramics. In addition, techniques to modify material properties for the machining process are explained. The authors discuss machining strategies including the latest developments in micro-texturing of glass micro-channels and reports on developments in controlling and analysis aspects of machining. This book is a unique reference for engineers and industrial researchers involved in development, design and use of micromachining, chemical micro-drilling or chemical engraving techniques and equipment.

  • Only all-encompassing reference coving Micro-ECDM and SACE available on the market

From the Inside Flap
Micromachining Using Electrochemical Discharge Phenomenon is a first attempt to collect the state of the art knowledge on micromachining using electrochemical discharges and to establish the fundamentals of this exciting technology. It presents Spark Assisted Chemical Engraving (SACE) -- or Electro Chemical Discharge Machining (ECDM) -- an unconventional and under-utilized technology which allows for relatively low cost micromachining of glass, polymers and other materials. .

Organized into two parts, the book first explains the fundamentals of SACE (in particular the Electrochemical Discharges). The second part focuses on the practical aspects of implementing this machining technology to show industrial researchers and engineers -- including those from fields outside of microtechnology (e.g., from life science) -- how to work with a mechanical workshop to build a simple machining set-up.

• Topics include: micro- and electrochemical discharge machining (incl. glass), microfluidics, non-conventional manufacturing, electrochemical discharges, biocompatibility, anode effects

• Provides applicable information for engineers in industry dealing with micromachining of glass, polymers and ceramics

• Covers a range of microfluidic devices (incl. micro-TAS) with applications in various fields like chemistry and life sciences

About the Author

Series Editor Preface

The possibility of modifying materials using electrical discharges has fascinated mankind ever since he observed the results of lightning striking objects in nature. We do not, of course, know when the first observation took place, but we may be reasonably sure that it was a sufficiently long time ago that many millennia had to pass before electricity was "tamed", and subsequently put to work modifying materials in a systematic, "scientific" way-as exemplified by Humphrey Davy's electrolysing common salt to produce metallic sodium at the Royal Institution in London.

But these are essentially faradaic processes (named after Davy's erstwhile assistant Michael Faraday), and such processes are also used extensively today for (micro) machining, as exemplified by electrochemical machining (ECM). They are relatively well known, and are applicable to conducting workpieces. Far less well known is the technology of what is now called spark-assisted chemical engraving (SACE), in which the workpiece is merely placed in the close vicinity of the pointed working electrode, and is eroded by sparks jumping across the gas bubbles that develop around the electrode to reach the electrolyte in which everything is immersed, the circuit being completed by the presence of a large counterelectrode.

This technology can therefore be equally well used for workpieces made from nonconducting materials such as glass, traditionally difficult to machine, especially at the precision micro level needed for such applications as microfluidic mixers and reactors. The development of attractive machining technologies such as SACE is in itself likely to play a decisive part in the growth of microfluidics-based methods in chemical processing and medical diagnostics, to name just two important areas of application.

Since, as the author very correctly points out, knowledge about nonfaradaic electrochemical machining methods is presently remarkably scanty within the microsystems community, this book is conceived as a comprehensive treatise, covering the entire field, starting with a lucid explanation of the physico-chemical fundamentals, and ending with a thorough discussion of the practical questions likely to be asked, and an authoritative exposition of the means to their resolution.

I therefore anticipate that this book will significantly contribute to enabling the rapid growth of micromachining of nonconducting materials, for which there is tremendous hitherto unexploited potential.

Do yourself a favor...
By Amber Roberts
This book is a must have. Covers just about, if not, everything you need to know about Branding. Not a big fan of how Chapter 3 was written. Let's just say the Professor who wrote/contributed to Chapter 3 felt the need to flex his English skills - unecessary over the top vocabulary. Chapter 4 is the best chapter - Competitive Brand Strategies. Uber came to mind this entire chapter regarding their pioneer advantage. If you wish to have a solid grasp of Branding, do yourself a favor and buy this book.

An Invaluable Single Source of Information and Counsel
By Robert Morris
The last time I checked, Amazon and its online partner Borders sell more than 8,000 different books on the general subject of brands and brand management. Presumably this number will continue to increase as organizations become more actively involved with marketing initiatives which effectively leverage one or more brands.

What we have here is one of the volumes which comprise a series produced by faculty members at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. It was edited by Alice M. Tybout and Tim Calkins who co-authored the Preface; Philip Kotler provides the Foreword and Calkins the Introduction.

I feel obligated to suggest at the outset that none of the volumes in this series is an "easy read." On the contrary, each requires but will generously reward a careful consideration of its contents which, in this volume, are carefully organized within four Sections:

I (Chapters 1-3) Key Branding Concepts

II (Chapters 4-6) Strategies for Building and Leveraging Brands

III (Chapters 7-13) From Strategy to Implementation

IV (Chapters 14-20) Branding Insights from Senior Managers

There are five themes which are rigorously examined through the narrative: brand positioning, brand design, brand meaning, leveraging a brand, creating a brand-driven organization, and then three chapters are devoted to issues on measurement. I especially appreciate the provision of various frameworks, check-lists (e.g. the five-step process for designing a brand on page 38), "Figures" (e.g Whirlpool's Touch Point Wheel" on page 230), and other tools to assist the reader with clarifying her or his thoughts about branding in terms the specific needs and interests of his or her organization.

Although taken out of context, the following three excerpts are representative of the high quality of thinking and writing throughout this book:

"The word brand has a tripartite etymology. One emphasis clusters around burning, with connotations both of fiery consummation and of banking the hearth. A second emphasis clusters around marking, with connotations of ownership and indelibility, as well as paradoxical allusions to intrinsic essence, whether or merit or stigma. A third emphasis clusters around the delivery of, or deliverance from, danger (stoke, anneal, cauterize; conflagration, possession, aggression). The brand embodies the transformative heat of passion, properly tended. It is bestowed and it is earned. The brand bespeaks the forging of a family." John F. Sherry, Jr. on "Brand Meaning," page 41.

"There are several sources of pioneering advantage. All are derived from the pioneer's unique role in creating the category, in defining the dimensions on which brands compete, and in influencing the importance buyers attach to perceived differences. Simply put, the pioneer plays a unique role... It is perceived different from others, and that perception is valuable in several ways....A pioneer can become the standard against which later entrants are judged simply by establishing the category and being viewed as the near-ideal product. This strong association with the product category means that virtually all other products in the category are now judged by the established standard. Standards in markets take at least two forms -- psychological standards and technological standards." Gregory S. Carpenter and Kent Nakamoto on "Competitive Strategies," pages 75 and 77.

"The differences between technology markets and CPG [consumer packaged goods] markets from a branding standpoint can be categorized into differences related to the market, differences related to products, differences related to customer behavior, and differences related to channels and ecosystems. I use this categorization scheme to discuss the challenges and principles of branding in technology markets. Figure 11.1 [pages 204 and 205] summarizes the key contextual dimensions that form the basis of contrasting brands in technology markets with branding in CPG markets." Mohanbir Sawhney on "Branding in Technology Markets," pages 202 and 203.

This book will be of greatest value to those senior-level executives who need to know their customers better and how to get closer to them, who need expert counsel on how to differentiate what they offer and then with formulating appropriate branding strategies which position their offering, not only as relevant to the given target market but indeed superior in value to whatever is offered by competitors.

Those who share my high regard for this volume are urged to check out Kellogg on Marketing edited by Dawn Iacobucci and Kellogg on Integrated Marketing co-edited by David Dranove and Sonia Marciano. I also recommend Harvard Business Review on Brand Management, Alina Wheeler's Designing Brand Identity, William J. McEwen's Married to the Brand, Marty Neumeir's The Brand Gap, Martin Lindstrom's Brand Sense, David A. Aaker's Building Strong Brands as well as Brand Portfolio Strategy, Bill Schley and Carl Nichols Jr.'s Why Johnny Can't Brand, Scott Bedbury and Stephen Fenichell's A New Brand World, Kevin Lane Keller's Strategic Brand Management (Second Edition), Alex Wipperfurth's Brand Hijack, and Douglas B. Holt's How Brands Become Icons.

A Thorough Analysis on Branding
By Paul Marc Oliu
I picked up "Kellogg on Branding" from Amazon because my company was embarking on a branding exercise. As part of the team, I wanted to get well-versed in the theoretical and practical implications of branding and brand management. Little did I realize that I have picked up a gem.

First and foremost, this is an academic book, some of which may cause a reader to gloss over, especially if they are just looking for easy bullet point overviews. Nonetheless, I found this to be a goldmine of information.

A collection of articles and research by some of the by faculty at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University covering a range of issues. Specifically, the book covers branding concepts in the first three chapters, strategies for building and leveraging brands, strategy to implimentation, and branding insights.

I found the last chapters (14 through 20) to be the most interesting as they were written by senior executives at firms. Whether it was a discussion on there individual companies leveraged their brand, to using their brand internally, it was the more "Practical" section of the book.

Thats not to diminish the other sections of the book. In one collection we have a guide for branding in the tech sector, to managing a brand portfolio, to design and positioning. Each with a wealth of information for anyone looking at their own companies and trying to make sense of branding, brand strategy and brand management.

Needless to say, this volume armed me quite well for our branding initiatives.

Again, this is a detailed book, and not a gloss over. If you can read this with the attention to detail "Kellogg on Branding" offers, then you will be well rewarded. If not, you may want to look elsewhere.

Regardless, I highly recommend.

Yes, this is the book you need
By Kelly Snyder
You might have noticed that the number of autodidactic Gujarati products is rather limited. However, this out of print little handbook is exactly the product that you need. If you can get the audio that came with the original package it would be great - but you should be able to figure things out by using online resources.

The book is divided into two sections. The first section teaches you the basics and allows you to skip learning the script. The second section gets pretty advanced and is almost 100% in Gujarati script. Even though it is a compact book, it is over 300 pages and it is very dense material. You might spend several hours working through just one page. It is clearly layed out and progresses steadily from the complete basics to a relatively advanced level.

Perhaps they will give us a second printing someday.

A good basic textbook for beginners
By Prentiss Riddle
A straightforward, modern introduction to the language. Dwyer provides both romanized transcriptions and Gujarati script for the first half of the book, then relies entirely on Gujarati script for the second half. Note that the book is available both with and without accompanying cassettes.

Best All Round Gujarati Grammar
By A Customer
My girlfriend and I both are using Rachel Dwyer's book to improve our Gujarati. I come from a Gujarati background and can read the script. I use the book to address all my grammar problems with gender and verb agreement. My girlfriend, who does not have a Gujarati background, uses the book as an introduction to the language and has found the English transliterations which appear next to the Gujarati script especially useful. As a comparison, Kirit N. Shah's "Learn Gujarati" is geared towards children, has a superior section on learning the script and has a nice little collection of poetry in the back. But Dwyer's book is by far the best book in print for an adult trying to learn the grammar.

Outstanding Work
By B. D. Cooper
I don't understand the other reviewer's rating for this book. Even if he got the first edition by mistake rather than the 4th, it too was astonishingly good and deserved 5 stars. Frankly, this is the only comprehensive single volume history of the English common law that is fully up-to-date. Professor Baker is incredibly skilled at summarizing a complex or controversial matter in a paragraph or a page (which for students does require close reading). His writing is clear and easy to comprehend. The sourcebook that he and Professor Milsom edited is a valuable supplement to this text, but not required. Some lawyers really like Plucknett's Concise History of the Common Law, which is very good, but it's 50 years out of date.

Beware -- this is not the current version!
By Alexander Volokh
The information above suggests that this book is the 4th ed. from 2002. As of this writing, there's one used copy available. Note that the bookseller says that one was printed in 1971. That would make this the 1st ed. The new version of this book is available elsewhere on Amazon.

With the release of Disposable - A History of Skateboard Art in 2004, author Sean Cliver made a brilliant attempt at artfully cataloging every important skateboard deck ever released. In the process, he created a classic, but was left feeling less than satisfied. Ever the completist, the gaping omissions in the first book gnawed at him and drove him to envision compiling the ultimate encyclopedia of Skateboard decks. While Disposable was beautiful, capturing the essence of the aesthetic, The Disposable Skateboard Bible sets out to be the ultimate guide. The author's industry insider status (mesmerized by his first visit to a skate shop in 1986 he went all out and in 1989, landed his first job as a designer at Powell-Peralta) allows him to guide readers through the culture and experience, the art and the mania of the skate world with authority and expertise. While the boards take center stage, fascinating vignettes and recollections by an A-list of skateboarding personalities from Tony Hawk to Mike Vallely, Mark Gonzales to Mark "Gator" Rogowski, Steve Caballero to Stacy Peralta and more.

Review
This may put me on both sides of the wrong age too old to today's generation and too young to the skaters of the 80s but as a seven-year-old runt in 1987, I would travel down to Milwaukee's Turf Skatepark with my mom and my older brother, Than, and split time watching him do scratcher grinds in the ice-slick deep bowl or slamming around a joystick while attempting to out-run bees in the video game 720º;. All I did was kneeboard then, but I liked the smell of the Turf lobby and would spend a good deal of time admiring the fluorescent wheels, board graphics - namely, the Tony Hawk Powell-Peralta Bird Skull graphic - or the griptape art (Even the pre-cut Nash circular saw grip design seemed awesome to me at the time).

When I finally started skateboarding in 1995, the first mid nineties memory that comes to mind is the girl who modeled for Teabag clothing. She was gorgeous in a way reserved only for a boy on the verge of pubescence and she graced the pages of Big Brother magazine, where Sean Cliver worked.

I didn't take much notice at the time, but when Sean Cliver wrote Disposable: A History of Skateboard Art in 2005, it brought a lot of my memories back, not just from the perfect storm that was Big Brother, but of those years at the Turf all those memories that each wheel, board graphic or piece of torn griptape held. Now, I am not and probably never will be a skateboard collector, but his most recent follow-up book, The Disposable Skateboard Bible broadens the years of nostalgia and is an amazing read for anyone who holds their greatest memories in the very thing they have spent their life destroying. It's out now and is available through Gingko Press or Amazon.com . --ESPN.com

---This book is awesome..
----I discovered this book when I was researching info on the GREAT BOOK HISTORY OF ":SKATEBOARD SHOES":.
-------NEGATIVE-----
---Skateboarding decks & products GET WAAAAAY TO MUCH ATTENTION IN THIS BOOK!!! Why Sean>?? 80's & 90's skaters don't care about 2x4 skateboard decks..45% of this book is dedicated to the boring PRE-POWELL PERALTA side of skating..I am old. 40 years old! I skated form 1986-1993. My whooooole teenage years from 11-19-ish. The earliest decks that have any interest graphicly or shape are Alva or Dogtown in early 80's..it makes no sense why Sean Cliver who is like my "brother from another mother",,who was/is my ultimate favorite part of MY SKATE HISTORY.
--Despite the boring skate decks..the only other negative I have is my last deck form my teenage years is missing..It was a BigBird Alva..
---Im buying Marc McKee's next...Sean if you BUT SOME REMOTE RETARDED CHANCEread this= thank you..I wish I could be early 90's forever.

Missing memories
By R. Freiberger
I bought this book after picking up a copy of Concrete Wave magazine. There was an interview for the author and a few photos from the book which I found very interesting.

When I started skateboarding it was in 1986, and at the height of popularity in my area. Every shop was covered with neon deck designs and day glo plastic parts for sale. I don't remember many (if any) wheels that were natural colored white, everything was bright and loud. Every company stood out, there was no mistake for a Vision board or a G&S, you could even tell the difference from the shapes alone.

I never actually had a board from these years, my parents bought me a generic board while my friends all had the skate shop specials. So all I could do is read the Transworld and Thrasher magazines at the super market.

Years later, I wanted to buy a reissue board and while searching around I knew there was a few favorites that were missing. The reissue market is mostly Santa Cruz and Powell, with some other brands like a few Vision. After finding this book from reading Concrete Wave, I was amazed at the amount of skateboards I remember and the ones that I didn't.

The book is produced on a nice thick cover and each page is very thick, also there is a bit of distressed look to the pages. Each deck is photographed very clearly, and the range of graphics is amazing, I had no ideas there were so many colors to some of the decks or alternate graphics.

I think the part that really surprised me was how I could remember so many of the boards and who had them. It also kinda of made me realize that how technical skating has gotten really left behind the unique shapes that defined some of the boards. I just recently bought my first longboard and find it's more fun as their shapes and design are fun since it's different from each other.

In closing, if you have any interest in skating history or just interested in the graphics, or even wanting to create your own custom skateboard, this is a great resource. The book covers from the beginning of skateboarding, to about 2007.

BTW my favorite skateboard?

The Schmitt Stick John Lucreo from 1987.

I don't usually write reviews but this is one of the raddest books I've ever purchased.
By Crisis
This book is written by Sean Cliver who designed skateboard graphics for Powell originally back in 1988 (He designed all the rad Powell graphics in the early 90's. Ray Barbee, Frankie Hill, Bucky Lasek), then went on to work at World Industries, Birdhouse and Hookups. He still designs board graphics in a freelance capacity. Here's a link to a great bio in Slap Magazine. [...]

The dude knows really knows how to design and fully understands the over all radness of skateboard graphics, which is evident by this book.

Now for the book. It's the best coffee table book you can buy if you skate, used to skate, or like rad skateboard graphics and skateboard history. 368 pages of decks and insight from the 70's through the 90s. It's basically like the history of the skateboard.

The quality of the book is top shelf style. Hard bound with a ribbon for saving pages. Printing is really high quality. You can tell that he spent a lot of time on every single page of this book to make sure it was perfect. Each page is fully designed from top to bottom. You won't see a white page with just pictures and words, because he's designed the background of the pages as well with a patina you might see in a really old book.

I'm in the graphic t shirt design industry and this book contains pretty much everything that has inspired me to get to where I am today. It's really refreshing to see a book as well written and designed as this, by someone that I can really relate to.

Bottom line. Get this book. I would have paid twice the price for it.

New York Times bestselling author and stand-up comedian Michael Ian Black delivers a frank and funny memoir about confronting his genetic legacy as he hits his forties.

Whether it’s family history, religion, aging, or his parents, Michael Ian Black always has something to say in the dry, irreverent voice that has captured a fan base of millions. When a medical diagnosis forces him to realize he’s not getting any younger, he reexamines his life as a middle-aged guy—of course, in the deadpan wit and self-deprecating vignettes that have become trademarks of his humor.

The alt-comedy take on getting older, Navel Gazing is a funny-because-it’s-true memoir about looking around when you’re forty and realizing that life is about more than receding hairlines and proving one’s manliness on Twitter—it’s about laughing at yourself.

Review
"Set him on the recommended shelf beside Sedaris and Fey." (Booklist)

"It's funny and sad and ridiculous and searching and humane and the gravitas sneaks up on you, and the last page had me in tears.” (Elizabeth Gilbert, NYT bestselling author of Eat Pray Love)

"Solid, sensitive, and often appropriately silly... Unlike many other books by comedians, this memoir never feels like a series of onstage routines transcribed to make a buck. Black’s examination of the many meanings of being a middle-aged father, husband, and son is an insightful and eminently readable story." (Publishers Weekly)

"NAVEL GAZING is anything but -- an emphatic, wired-to-the-world examination of fate and fragility. And it's so...fucking...funny." (Patton Oswalt)

"Michael Ian Black asked me if I would provide a quote for his book and I said that I would." (Ricky Gervais)

"I don’t know what’s more gut wrenching - the tales of his mom’s illness or the time he tried to start a punk band. This book is so touching, well-written, dare I say profound? Okay how about totally life affirming? These pages are so beautiful they don’t deserve to also be fall down funny. Michael Ian Black is showing off. This book made me giggle wildly, then shook me with the reminder of mine and everyone’s impending death, brought comfort, and then more giggles. And then in honor of Michael, I took a nap." (Jen Kirkman, author of I CAN BARELY TAKE CARE OF MYSELF)

"Black sustains a light touch throughout, projecting a warmth that extends from his relationship with his mother through his family life with wife and children." (Kirkus Reviews)

“All these years, Michael Ian Black has not gotten enough credit for what a good writer he is. This book is charming and good company and—best of all—amazingly honest. And really, really funny, of course—though you probably already guessed at that part.”
— Ira Glass, This American Life

"Memorable and funny. . . . An amusing look at masculine insecurity and confusion."
—Kirkus Reviews

“This book is so frank, so full of amusingly embarrassing confessions, I should probably be giving Michael Black a hug instead of a blurb.”
—Sarah Vowell, New York Times bestselling author and essayist

“It’s no surprise that Michael Ian Black’s book is hysterical. But I was surprised by how heartfelt and touching his memoir is. It’s true: Michael Ian Black has emotions!”
—A.J. Jacobs, New York Times bestselling author of The Year of Living Biblically and The Know-It-All

"I loved My Custom Van. But I loved You're Not Doing It Right even more. Reading this book felt like taking a long road trip with Michael himself—which I’ve done. And I actually recommend the book more. Touching, hilarious, and truthful all at once. What else do you want, America?"
—Mike Birbiglia, New York Times bestselling author of Sleepwalk with Me

"Dear Michael Ian Black: please stop writing things in books that I wish I had written myself, it's starting to make me feel bad. Also, would you like to be friends someday? I sure would."
—Samantha Bee, senior correspondent on The Daily Show and author of I Know I Am But What Are You?

"Michael Ian Black is one of the finest comedy minds of our generation and a master at assembling words in a hilariously pleasing way. You would have to be a vapid crapsack not to enjoy this book."
—Chris Hardwick (Praise for Michael Ian Black)

Navel Gazing Introduction “Oh shit,” you may think, “I am going to die”
My mother has no belly button. They took it during one of her “major” surgeries. Over the last fifteen years or so, Mom has had so many surgeries, she now divides them into categories to keep them straight in her head. Minor surgeries are the outpatient ones, like when she visits the specialist who refills the deck-of-cards-size pain pump implanted in her side. Major surgeries are those requiring extended hospitalization and recovery, like the several surgeries she has had to cut away evermore inches of dead intestine, or the time they returned her appendix to its home below her abdomen from where they found it floating near her lung as if it were a lost cat. The bellybuttonectomy was part of a major surgery to untangle an intestine that had looped itself through her bowel, a potentially fatal condition.

Before the operation, her doctor asked Mom how attached she felt to her navel, explaining that if she felt the need to preserve it, a plastic surgeon could be brought in to tie together a new one for her like a balloon knot. If a doctor ever asks me how attached I am to my own belly button, I will answer “Very!” because although I am not crazy about any of my body parts, I am selfish enough that I would like to keep them all.

Mom told the doctor she did not hold her own belly button quite so dear. “Good,” he said, since the plastic surgeon would require an additional expense not covered by whichever insurance company had the misfortune to hold my mother’s policy. It’s hard to argue with an insurance company refusing to pay for a new navel. Even I, a proponent of universal health care and renowned hater of The Man, would have a hard time defending the expense of reconstructive belly button surgery. So, with Mom’s blessing, they took it. Where her belly button used to be, there is now just skin, like a pothole that’s been paved over.

How strange to not have a belly button. After all, a belly button is one of those things that define us, not only as humans, but as members of the entire biological class Mammalia. Without a belly button, you could just as easily be fish or fungus. Having it taken seems like a peculiar kind of bodily transgression, as if a burglar broke into your house but only stole your high school ring.

Growing up, I don’t remember Mom ever having so much as a cold, despite the fact that she struggled with her weight her entire life, never exercised, and spent years smoking Virginia Slims, the feminist cigarette. Then, almost overnight, it all turned to shit.

Her health woes began in a teeny vacation cottage she once owned in the Blue Ridge Mountains with her partner, Sandy. They used to spend a month there each summer after Sandy’s term as a South Florida preschool director ended. The cottage is where Mom first noticed persistent and heavy bleeding from her lady parts. (As her son, I am incapable of writing anything more specific than “lady parts” when describing my mother’s lady parts.)

The telephone calls to me and my brother, Eric, were brief and to the point: She had uterine cancer. . . . They’d found it early, Stage 1. . . . Her prognosis was excellent. . . . No, she didn’t need us to fly down there. . . . She and Sandy would be returning to Florida for surgery, followed by a course of radiation. . . . We should go about our lives as if nothing were amiss. . . . Updates forthcoming.

Cancer is a scary diagnosis, of course, but Mom did not seem worried. Or perhaps she chose to keep the worry from her words so as not to alarm us. And perhaps we let her do this because, even though we are adults, we are also still her children, and children, no matter how old, allow themselves to be gullible with their parents, because being gullible is often easier than being wise.

Upon her return to Florida, Mom underwent a radical hysterectomy. The surgery revealed bad news. Her cancer had invaded the uterine wall, escalating her diagnosis from Stage 1 to Stage 3. Cancer diagnoses are divided into four stages, with Stage 4 being terminal. They are further subdivided into letters a through c. Mom’s cancer was rediagnosed as Stage 3c, one squiggly letter away from a death sentence.

A few years ago, I wrote a book called You’re Not Doing It Right, a (very good, please purchase) memoir about romantic relationships and marriage. This book is a follow-up, focusing on time and family and the body—subjects I began thinking about with a certain degree of seriousness around the time Mom first got sick, and deepening after I turned forty. Forty is that moment most of us believe ourselves to be balanced right at the fulcrum of the life-expectancy teeterboard. On one side, we see our parents’ generation starting to get old, some of them sick, some already dead. On the other, our children’s generation, brimming with a vibrant joie de vivre best described as “annoying.” And there you are, balanced between the two for a split second before beginning your inexorable slide toward the land of dashed dreams and broken hips and assisted living facilities and death.

Once you hit forty, it is no longer possible to pretend you will remain forever young. In fact, according to the Social Security Administration, a man like me, age forty-three, only can expect to live an additional thirty-eight years. In other words, I am already past my life’s midpoint; calling myself middle-aged is, at best, a fudge, at worst a disservice to the entire field of mathematics. Even so, I don’t feel like my life is more than halfway over. I feel exactly as I did ten or fifteen years ago. Yet somehow whole decades have elapsed in the time I’ve spent upgrading my iPhones through their various iterations. Entire species have gone extinct as I drove around the mall looking for better parking spaces. Then one day, I look up and a government agency is informing me I am no longer a zesty young man, but a just-past-middle-aged adult with adult responsibilities and a mortgage and the first signs of erectile dysfunction. This moment eventually happens to all of us, the moment when you first sense that the road you are traveling may, at some point, end. And when that realization hits, it does so in the sudden, jarring manner of a car crash: “Oh, shit!” you may think at the moment of impact. “I’m going to die.”

No doubt some people shrug their shoulders at this revelation. Not me. I panicked. My reaction, I suspect, is the more common of the two. In fact, vast swaths of the economy exist precisely to serve as a balm for this midlife hysteria. The sports car industry. The cosmetic surgery industry. The divorce industry, and its attendant trophy wife industry. Youth may be wasted on the young, but billions are wasted on the middle-aged.

My panic catalyzed a thorough examination of my place in the universe, starting with my body. For most of my life, I’d thought about my body only in terms of how best to endure its inadequacies. I’d never done a thorough head-to-toe review of my corporeal self. Yes, I’d had physicals, but those only served to provide raw data points. Such-and-such blood pressure, such-and-such cholesterol, such-and-such this, that, and the other thing. All of which could be weighed and sorted and inputted onto spreadsheets to be distributed among interested medical practitioners and members of Obama Death Panels. And when I began this process of thinking about myself from a physical perspective, as opposed to a more mental or creative perspective, I discovered something that sent me into a psychic tailspin, something that made my mother’s cancer seem insignificant. What I discovered is this: I was losing my hair.

Not a lot. Not enough that other people would necessarily even notice. Certainly not so much that I couldn’t disguise it through artful arrangement. But how long before “artful arrangement” metastasized into comb-over, the hair loss equivalent of a Stage 3c diagnosis?

I’d managed to go through the first forty years of my life with no discernible hair loss, and now, just as I’m confronting my own mortality, I start to go bald? How about one thing at a time? I don’t consider myself a particularly vain man, but that is only because I am lying. The truth is, I am incredibly vain, even though I have very little to be vain about. But I do have a full head of hair. At least I did. Now I have most of a full head of hair, but also an increasingly visible scalp, and a swirly patch at the back of my head, a plain once lush as the Serengeti, but which grows more parched and drought-stricken by the day, and threatens to erode into a full-blown bald spot. Well, not on my watch, hair. Not on my watch.

I researched male-pattern baldness. I bought volumizing shampoos. I learned esoteric terms like DHT, a chemical derivative of testosterone that, when imbalanced, miniaturizes the hair follicles. I read up on hair transplants, even going so far as to ask my accountant if I could deduct such a procedure as a business expense. (He said I could, since I am an actor, and actors must have thick, glossy manes, except for Bruce Willis, who can do whatever he wants.) Finally, I made an appointment with a New York hair-restoration specialist, who, to my surprise, turned out to be the single baldest man I have ever seen. He looked like a condom with eyes.

My appointment lasted less than ten minutes. He ran a portable microscope over my scalp, beaming images of all my lovely, individual follicles onto a small television monitor. Yes, he could definitely see thinning, but I still had too much hair to qualify for a transplant. Instead, he prescribed finasteride (Propecia) pills and topical minoxidil (Rogaine), both of which I will have to use for as long as I wish to retain my lustrous locks, which is forever. Even after I am dead.

Obviously, I’m joking about comparing hair loss to my mom’s cancer. Nobody should get too worked up about something as superficial as thinning hair. Except I did. Because hair loss is only superficial when it happens to somebody else. When it happened to me, it felt cataclysmic. That doctor’s waiting room was like a funeral home, filled with somber guys in various states of mourning. Some, like me, appeared more or less hirsute. Others, in more advanced stages of grief, wore baseball caps or pushed their remaining hair forward to camouflage their emerging foreheads, or sported full beards to distract from their lack of topside locks. If hair loss is no big deal, what were we all doing there? And why did we refuse to look each other in the eye? I’d visited intensive care units more upbeat than this place. Why? Because everybody is guilty of catastrophizing the trivial, especially when it comes to our bodies. I know this is true, because were it not, we would not have coined the word cankle.

The great writer Nora Ephron titled her final essay collection I Feel Bad About My Neck, as apt a description of this condition as any there’s likely to be. Personally, I never felt bad about Nora Ephron’s neck, but I certainly feel bad about the leukemia that killed her. Apparently, Nora didn’t speak much about her cancer, preferring to keep her large sufferings private, her small ones public. It is an impulse I understand well. Funny people do not want pity. They want laughs. And money. (Mostly money.) I hope Nora Ephron at least made peace with her neck before she died. Who wants to go to the grave feeling bad about her neck? Or thighs or stomach? Feet, yes. Feeling bad about one’s feet is understandable.

I feel bad about my feet.

Here are some other things I feel bad about: the almost 1:1 ratio of the diameter of my upper arms to my wrists; the red blob on my chest, which I am told is a harmless blood vessel, but which reads to the untrained eye like a little clown nose; the fact that my mustache grows at a much quicker rate than my beard, so that I have the perpetual look of a thirteen-year-old Mexican boy; the fact that my right shoulder rests higher than my left no matter how many times throughout the day I attempt to rearrange my spine; my height, which is two inches less than optimal; the curvature of my nose, which is approaching Owen Wilson levels of unsightliness; my drooping scrotum, which, by the year, is slowly sinking into the earth like the city of Venice; the mysterious red slashes I discover on my shoulders and back each morning, the result of “sleep scratching,” which, after researching, I discover is an actual mental disorder I seem to have, as is my trichotillomania, the compulsive desire to pull out hair—in my case, beard whiskers—resulting in a large bare patch under my right jawline where there should be beard, which does nothing to diminish my thirteen-year-old-Mexican-boy look. I feel bad about my escalating weight and the amount of arm hair I have, as well as my armpit hair, which extends farther down the underside of my arm than I think it ought to, and also the shade of my skin, which is the Crayola color between “pallid” and “jaundiced.” This is only a partial list.

On the other hand, there are things about which I feel pretty good. My health, to this point, has been excellent, although it is hard to convince myself it will remain so if I continue to eat, as I did last night after everybody had gone to bed: half a bag of Tostitos, a bowl of ice cream, more Tostitos, and three stale almond cookies that tasted fine once I brushed the dog hair off them. Moreover, I am sixteen years into a marriage, a marriage I expect to last at least another six weeks. We have two kids who do not yet hate us. Plus, although I am gaining weight, I am still thinner than almost all of the guys I went to high school with, which is the only metric that matters. Also, since I am often unemployed, I get plenty of healthful sleep. My sexual engine, never a dynamo, continues to putter along at the libidinous equivalent of a Toyota Camry, decent and workmanlike, but not setting any performance records. And then there is my belly button. It is a fine belly button, an innie, chockablock with small kernels of linty debris and dead skin, a veritable cornucopia of buried treasure. Were I ever to lose my navel, I would surely miss it.

Mom’s updated cancer diagnosis demanded a new, more aggressive treatment. In addition to the standard course of external radiation she’d already agreed to, the doctors now proposed adding internal radiation, a process where a team threads a radioactive cocktail of cesium, iridium, and iodine into the patient through a catheter, using advanced imaging technology to position the pill as near to the cancer as they can get it. Once that is achieved, they run away because the patient is now, literally, radioactive. I’m not exaggerating. Patients undergoing internal radiation therapy are quarantined in a “hot room” for three days while the body absorbs the poisonous fissile material. It’s like eating a nuke. During those three days, patients are not allowed visitors, and medical staff provide care from a distance. I asked Mom how she got her food. “They threw it,” she said.

(I also ask the obvious question, but the answer is no: Despite being inundated with mysterious radioactive material, she acquired no superpowers.)

The radiation therapy was painless, but being alone for three days drove my normally voluble mother batty. She passed the time reading, watching TV, and twirling her bra above her head like a lasso. At the end of her quarantine, the medical staff used a Geiger counter to ensure her body was no longer shooting off death beams. Upon checking her torso, they discovered Mom had written florid messages of thanks all over her stomach in Magic Marker. Everybody had a good laugh, and they sent her home. She checked out of the hospital, spirits high. “Great,” she thought. “That’s the end of it.”

But her troubles had just begun.

Fast, funny read!
By Renee Bechtel
Michael Ian Black is one of my favorite authors. The only problem with his collection of books is there are not enough of them. "Navel Gazing" is as sharp, funny, and philosophical as his previous memoir "You're Not Doing it Right," and I was just as delighted with the brutally honest content. Black is painfully aware of his own shortcomings, and the chapter about his feet had me laughing and feeling a sense of relief that my own calloused toes weren't as wretched in comparison. Each chapter is indictive of how effortlessly he can take a mundane or depressing situation (dysfunctional family, spiritual bankruptcy, cancer) and spin it into a very funny and relatable offbeat tale. Black comes across as a self deprecating, broody, complex man with a generous and childlike heart - a confusing but endearing combination. You'll want to hug him, your family, and maybe even yourself. Aging sucks. But with it comes enlightment, wisdom, and humorous self examination. Black delivers it all.

A triumph! If you love to laugh, you NEED to get this book!!! 5 stars out of 5!

Boy did I love this book! It was funny and touching in all the right places. I found myself laughing out loud on almost every page! Michael Ian Black has done it again! His often-times silly and every-time witty reflections on life are addictive. I read the whole book in only a few days! Literally couldn't put it down. Michael Ian Black has been one of my favorite comedians for years; now he's one of my favorite authors.

You may know Michael Ian Black from movies such as Wet Hot American Summer, The Baxter, They Came Together, and Wanderlust. In addition, he has been in many great TV shows including The State, Stella and all those amazingly funny 'I love the...' shows on VH1 (my personal favorite was I love 1983 Strikes Back). On a personal level I have been a fan of his since I first fell in love with his dry and acerbic commentary on chicken nuggets.

Michael Ian Black's intoxicating yet extremely neurotic personality shines through the pages. You feel as though he's whispering in your ear as you read. He has masterfully transitioned his finely honed comedy skills into a writer's voice anyone can read and relate to.

My personal favorite tale covered in the book had to do with a punk band Michael Ian Black started in high school. As someone with many, many regrets throughout my own life I really connected to his self-reflection during this section of the book (and every other section as well). I found that chapter VERY funny and therapeutic in a way.

Overall, this is an outstanding book comedy fans of all ages will read and enjoy. Hopefully it will go down as one of the all-time classics of humor literature. For now it will be regarded as another triumph for Michael Ian Black, now undisputedly one of the greatest comedic minds of our generation.

5 stars.

to be a GOOD person. Furthermore
By SChessher
Michael Ian Black has already proven he can write. But in Navel Gazing he proves he can write about his mother's chronic health problems, and turn them into an interesting, relatable and humorous book. In Navel Gazing, Michael reflects on his mortality, the meaning of life, aging, the pronunciation of his dog's unusual name, and the belief that it's only vanity when other people freak out about losing their hair. For him it's a valid crisis. His writing is always candid, perceptive and humorously self-deprecating. Despite his efforts to make us think otherwise, Michael Ian Black proves himself, once again, to be a GOOD person. Furthermore, even with all his not-having-life-figured-out, he seems to know quite a bit.
