The Handmaid's Tale, by Margaret Atwood

In the world of the near future, who will control women's bodies?

Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets whose signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read. She must lie on her back once a month and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are only valued if their ovaries are viable.

Offred can remember the days before, when she lived and made love with her husband Luke; when she played with and protected her daughter; when she had a job, money of her own, and access to knowledge. But all of that is gone now....

Funny, unexpected, horrifying, and altogether convincing, The Handmaid's Tale is at once scathing satire, dire warning, and tour de force.

From Library Journal
In a startling departure from her previous novels ( Lady Oracle , Surfacing ), respected Canadian poet and novelist Atwood presents here a fable of the near future. In the Republic of Gilead, formerly the United States, far-right Schlafly/Falwell-type ideals have been carried to extremes in the monotheocratic government. The resulting society is a feminist's nightmare: women are strictly controlled, unable to have jobs or money and assigned to various classes: the chaste, childless Wives; the housekeeping Marthas; and the reproductive Handmaids, who turn their offspring over to the "morally fit" Wives. The tale is told by Offred (read: "of Fred"), a Handmaid who recalls the past and tells how the chilling society came to be. This powerful, memorable novel is highly recommended for most libraries. Review
"A novel that brilliantly illuminates some of the darker interconnections between politics and sex . . . Just as the world of Orwell's 1984 gripped our imaginations, so will the world of Atwood's handmaid!"
--Washington Post Book World

"The Handmaid's Tale deserves the highest praise"
--San Francisco Chronicle

"Atwood takes many trends which exist today and stretches them to their logical and chilling conclusions . . . An excellent novel about the directions our lives are taking . . . Read it while it's still allowed."
--Houston Chronicle

"Splendid."
--Newsweek

Powerful.
By Gorilichis
One of the scariest books I've ever read, especially if you think that, in many countries, women really do live like Offred. The story is so powerful that I could FEEL what Offred feels her sadness and desperation. I know that considering the whole plot this is a minor thing but the fact that she feels awkward because she can shave her legs or armpits really got to me. Just a minor detail that moved me so much. This book matters.

Everyone should read this book...
By Candice Z.
The Handmaid's Tale should be required reading for everyone. It's a great cautionary tale about a future where women have lost all their rights, and men and religion are what control America. It's sad that I could see parts of this book becoming a reality in our future if certain leaders had their way. I hope that people read this story and realize that we need to be more tolerant of different religions because one ultimate religion can be detrimental to society. And by fighting again feminism you'll silence a majority of the population and create a scary, unbalanced world. Let's learn from this book what not to do as we move into the future.

I hated it till the end because of it's subject matter
By sarah kay sheldon
I hated it till the end because of it's subject matter. Brought forth a lot of emotion. Very dark. But the very last section blew my mind away and the whole story just fell into place. It seemed dark and abstract before and then it just fit. It was astounding. I've recommended it to several people. That last section, just makes it all so...intense. Atwood is a master.
