Poorly implemented facsimile

First, let me say that, when I ordered this book, I knew it was copy of the 1946 edition. Please understand that if you order a copy. I ordered it to preserve my original 1946 first edition. However, the material is still valuable today and should be on the bookshelf of any aspiring gunsmith. The original deserves five stars. My problem is with the BNPublishing edition. Even though they claim a 2013 copyright date, the only new material is the cover artwork. Not only that, the actual original contents are incomplete. BNPublishing has chosen to leave out all the unpaginated (and valuable) figures and illustrations, as well as the last six pages of the index. And in producing the facsimile, while enlarging the page size, they have reduced the text size to 96% of the original. Small, but noticeable. My biggest complaint is the use of GLOSS black ink on bright white paper. It makes the book difficult to read under anything but the best lighting conditions. I would recommend finding a good used copy of the original before buying this edition.

While this books is obviously around 50 years old (he mentions that "the war" will probably have a negative impact on Germany's gun industry), some information is simply timeless. In these days of CNC and computer-driven milling, this book still contains a wealth of invaluable information. Sometimes there are issues that you just can't fix with your $20,000 lathe, and this book can help explain many of them away.

This book has already paid for itself 5 times over in my gunsmithing business, as it's helped me resolve several issues that some of the "new age" smiths in town were clueless about. By the time the customers came to me, they thought their gun was trashed... this book helped save their weapons, and made me some cash in the process! I have no issues giving it 5 stars.

Good Book for better understanding of the Gunsmithing trade

This book is very good to start with for a basic understanding of Gunsmithing. It is a bit dated, however, the skills presented (and consequently required if undertaking working on firearms) are timeless whereas only the technology and tools have changed. (Without the basic skills, and knowledge of operations all the technology in the world is worthless.) Because of the age of publication, modern firearms are not discussed, but again, the basics of operation are discussed indepth and anyone with basic mechanical aptitude will find this book interesting even if they do not understand all of the details. I recommend this for anyone who loves firearms and is interested in learing their basic function and design of operation.

Missed opportunity to say something worthwhile

I usually love books that expose me to other cultures and experiences. I didn't care for this one. I wasn't turned off by language as some others seem to be, but I was turned off by tone. Rather than giving the reader insight, it's merely a personal success story written in a "I'm too cool for you" tone. I finished it, but I don know why.

You like basketball and hip-hop

I'm halfway through it and it's insufferable. I'd seen Eddie on Bill Maher's show a few times and he seemed interesting. Yet his memoir makes it clear he doesn't have a modest bone in his body. He talks about the appropriation of Chinese cuisine by white Americans, but he's blind to the fact that he shamelessly appropriates black culture. You like basketball and hip-hop? That's cool, but you grew up in a gated community and went to private school, so you're a little inauthentic. Eddie's pretty much a real-life version of the guy in "Malibu's Most Wanted."

Interesting, but not at all the book I was expecting after seeing his interview on Bill Maher. Mr. Huang has much to say, but it is often difficult to follow how he is saying it. If you aren't versed in Hip Hop, you will have a great deal of trouble following much of the content.

A good tool for test prep.

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is the intellectual part of the the Armed Forces Qualifying Test (AFQT). The test is "curved" which means that a raw score is converted to a cumulative distribution where you are ranked against approximately 6000 test takers, so a score of 95 on the test means you scored better than 95% of other test takers. This means that the raw score (percentage of questions answered correctly) does not reflect the curved score. For example, if the test is very easy perhaps 50% of candidates will score 85% on the test. This means that a raw score of 85% on this hypothetical easy test will actually give you a curved score of 50. To get into certain parts of the armed services requires better than a median (50) AFQT performance (Air force, Coast Guard, Marines, SEALS, Special Forces and Special Operations) in the core areas of Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), Mathematical Knowledge (MK), Word Knowledge (WK) and Paragraph Comprehension (PC). So candidates seeking entry into those areas will want to be well prepared for the test. Understanding instructions is a survival skill in the military, so verbal expression (VE), which is composed of (PC+WK) and receives double weight in computation of the final AFQT score. "So what?" You might ask. Consider these two hypothetical candidates: Candidate A scores 99 on the AR and MK test, but 0 on both WK and PC, while candidate B score 0 on AR and MK, but 99 on WK and PC. Candidate A will have an AFQT of 33 while candidate B will have an AFQT of 66. This means candidate B will likely be able to enter any service of their choice, while candidate A may not be able to get into any service. Though such a scenario is unlikely, it is demonstrates the importance of addressing weaknesses in the VE tests to getting a higher AFQT and thus giving you more military career options.

This is a very comprehensive test guide that combines DVD video (which are also available online), flash cards and practice tests (in the book and online). The book starts with practice tests for you to get a sense of where your current performance is. The core ( AR,MK, and VE) and AO, contain nothing that someone with a high school education would not know however, the technical sub-tests do require some specific knowledge that is outside a standard school curriculum. Though source material for the tests is not covered doing the questions should help you look-up the information you need to study.

As with all timed tests, speed getting to the correct answer is a factor, so strategies are covered that allow you to eliminate incorrect answers quickly. There is also guidance for your pretest prep and dealing with test stress. The book covers the difference between the computer-adaptive testing (CAT) and the traditional pencil and paper test to help with you tune your test preparation.

Great ASVAB study guide

When enlisting in the military your ASVAB score will determine what jobs and opportunities are open to you. When you have a good ASVAB score you will be given more career path choices, which is why it is so important to be prepared for and to do well on this test. Kaplan's 2016 Premier ASVAB study guide will gives the guidance and skills needed to get a much higher score on the test. I highly recommend purchasing this book and taking advantage of all it has to offer.

This book was very helpful and informative. The timed practice test were a great way to study and maximize my efforts. The book will guide you through how to study and gives explanations when you get wrong answers. I took my test two weeks after getting the book and made a 84 AFQT score.
