Patrick's considerable experience in the fields of woodlands and fruit growing shine through especially strongly, but the whole book is rich with vision and experience. What it offers is common sense solutions rooted in the culture and climate of these islands. This book is a clear and unarguable road map to where we need to go, an A-Z to sanity and common sense. Patrick has created a manual with which we can repair this beautiful jewel of a planet which we are fortunate enough to inhabit, and in so doing has given us a truly precious gift. About the Author

Patrick Whitefield (1949 – 2015) was an early pioneer of permaculture, adapting Bill Mollison’s teachings with a strong Southern Hemisphere bias to the cooler, maritime climate of the British Isles. He wrote a number of seminal books, including Permaculture in a Nutshell (1993), How to Make a Forest Garden (1996), The Living Landscape (2009), How To Read the Landscape (2014) and his magnum opus, The Earth Care Manual (2004), an authoritative resource on practical, tested, cool temperate permaculture. Patrick appeared in several BBC TV programmes, popular gardening videos, and taught many permaculture and other practical courses, throughout the UK.

Great textbook on Permaculture

I've only had a chance to glance through this and read

snippets, but I'm very impressed. A lot of information well

organized; it's like a textbook for a college level

Permaculture course. Seems comparable to, but easier to

understand and apply, than Mollison's Permaculture Design

Manual. I'm in the PNW US but I think this book will be very

useful here. Only compliant is the climate, etc maps of

britian rather than the US :-)

Wonderful Resource!

I just borrowed this book from the library because I was a little scared away by the high price. Now I know that I have to buy it. This is a fantastic book. I'm planning to start a small farm and have been reading about permaculture for a couple of years. If you live in a temperate climate, this is the best book on the subject. It is filled with diagrams and interesting details about how to establish a successful system. There is hardly anything that the book doesn't touch on. If you are a serious home gardener or you are looking to create a more sustainable farm, this book will be a well used resource.

This is a "never-give-away-book"!

It's really a great book and worth every penny if you're interested in Permaculture in cooler climates.
I was also a bit frightened by the price but it's a BIG book and the informations inside are priceless.
I also tend to say it's better than Mollisons Manual because the way of writing is easier to understand for me (I'm german).
So this is one of the books I will never allow to leave my house. ;-)

Scott Hurff is a product designer and author, who's worked at companies like Tinder, Kleiner Perkins-backed startups, and a pre-IPO ChannelAdvisor. He started his first company while in college, and became the youngest entrepreneur-in-residence at Kodiak Venture Partners in Boston. Throw sticky spaghetti at a sticky wall.

There are no good books on product design. Period. This is probably because its such a new field. This book changes that.

If you believe in lean product methodology - be prepared to change your mind. The gist of this book is: if you're going to throw spaghetti at the wall and see if it sticks, you had might as well look for the best wall first, and see how sticky the spaghetti is before throwing it. There is a certain science to it, and this book sets it down very clearly.

The book includes a very clear game plan on how to create sticky spaghetti.

If you are a world class product designer, this book won't teach you much new. Product design is too broad a field to be contained in one book. What you need to know most as a product designer is your industry or market, the pains of your customers and how you are solving their problems, and perhaps bringing joy to their lives. No book can teach you that.

On the other hand if you are looking for a holistic overview and a set of steps you can take - a process that will bring you there, this book will be very helpful. Its a fun read, clearly written with concrete advice on what you should be doing when. He's also a star wars fan, so of course they means he's pretty smart:)

A persuasive case for rigorous customer research-driven product design, supported with practical tools and methodologies

Digital product design is just the newest form of “knowing your customer”, and in this fun and accessible book Scott, makes the case that excellent, insightful, and valuable design comes less from “creative” exercises associated with the graphic arts and more with the rigorous approach of ethnographic observation and customer research.

Scott sheds light on the heritage of product design, revisiting successes from historic customer-focused visionaries like Lillian Gilbreth (who invented the modern kitchen), Henry Dreyfuss (the classic “I Love Lucy" telephone and circular Honeywell thermostat), and Neil McElroy (who invented the role of “brand manager”).

The majority of his book focuses on providing an overview of the modern product designers range of skills, and gives detailed overviews of tools such as the “Pain Matrix” and “Sales Safari” for gaining deep customer insights and product innovations. He also dives into the contentious debate about design fidelity—discussing the merits and drawbacks of prototypes versus pixel-perfect mocks. And, most importantly, how to approach incorporating incremental and impactful customer feedback into your product.

Having had the opportunity to read an advance copy, I believe this book is valuable not only for newcomers to the field of digital product design, but even senior practitioners who might learn about previously unknown history or techniques. This book has been a personal inspiration as I continue to refine my own philosophy of product design and development.

I was fortunate enough to receive an advanced copy of this book. However, this does not sway my opinion about how valuable this book is.

Note: I am half-way through the book and will add more to this review at a later date.

If you are a product designer or developer, or part of a team involved in a project that employs designers and developers for your company's products, you should learn the most fundamental ways in how to understand what people want from a product, and how they will keep using your product over the countless others available.

There are so many ideas about what customers want, and so many methods used to try and understand what they want. It often seems we as product creators forget about the customer we are creating for. Sometimes, we try to emulate certain methods because tech company A used this "revolutionary" method and happened to launch a successful product.

The most accurate method to get an idea of what is needed or wanted by your targeted audience, is to understand how the people you are building your product for, operate in their native environments. Setting up observable tests that individuals are aware of, will often skew results. We act differently and – more often than not – we slightly embellish our actions when we know we are the test subject.

But, how do we observe individuals using products without their knowledge, without being creepy or invasive, and within the confines of what is ethical and acceptable.

Designing Products People Love explains the best method for understanding our potential users. This book gives (us) designers and developers the tools to implement methods that help us understand if our product is, or the ideas within our product are, actually enhancing the user experience.

Within the first chapter, I already felt I found a book that reaffirms what I convey to my clients when they are adamant about devising user experience testing that produces canned results. I have already recommended this book to a number of them, and I am thrilled it is available to the public today.

There is much more to read and learn. I look forward to finishing the final copy and leaving another review.

About the Author
ALLISON ROSSETT, professor of Educational Technology at San Diego State University, is a consultant in the design, development, and evaluation of performance and training systems. A native New Yorker, ping pong champion in her youth, and yo-yoer in training, Allison has offered keynote speeches in this country and abroad. She teaches classes and consults on instructional design, learning technologies, performance analysis and needs assessment, and indepAndent learning.Rossett was the recipient of an Association for Educational Technology Book of the Year Award for her Training Needs Assessment. Her book, A Handbook of Job Aids, published by Jossey-Bass/Pfeiffer, won the International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI) top book award and an Association for Educational Technology Tool of the Year Award. She has also published dozens of articles, edited journals, offered seminars, coached and advised business and government leaders, evaluated programs, and managed corporate contracts and federal and state grants.

hands-on guide that is immediately useful

Overall, this book is a straightforward examination of performance analysis that explains why p.a. is more practial than traditional "training." It's a godsend for people who have to implement a plan right away because of the abundance of checklists and templates. I have some minor criticisms though since I have read several books in a similar category. 1 -- the author does not write as professionally as others (Rothwell, for example, who wrote Beyond training and Development) and spends too much time touting her earlier books 2 -- often the information borders on the extremely obvious 3 -- the book is overpriced as many textbooks are. P.A. boils down to the fact that it's really a "casing the joint" type of strategy -- get a general idea of the situation before diving in. All this fancy terminology for such a basic idea... still, it can definitely save a company a lot of time and money to do this common sense approach before spending money on training.

This book serves as the first course at a performance analysis dinner-it whets the appetite and entices the reader to look further and deeper. It provides the reader with tasty morsels of information without weighing the reader down in the heavier technicalities of performance analysis. First Things Fast is a quick and easy reference for the professional trainer and one that I will keep on hand for future use. It addresses the situation as it is-the way things are-and provides concrete examples and solutions for those involved with the process. Because of the quick and easy reading that characterizes the book, I would recommend this book to those who are seeking a basic understanding of performance analysis without wanting to invest a great deal of time. I would also recommend it to those who want a quick reference for use in their performance analysis work (the templates are an effective starting point for the line of questioning which needs to occur). First Things Fast has the potential to be an extremely useful tool for those individuals who are in the position to decide what needs to be done and why.

Great guide to quick human performance analysis

This book is a great help for anyone who is asked to analyze a performance problem. It provides a series of checklists and job aids to help someone figure out what's going on and how to fix it. It considers lots of problems and teaches you how to decide if the employee needs instruction, motivation or a changed environment. I really enjoyed this very practical and easy to read handbook; it avoids all the theory and jargon and puts the emphasis on analyzing human performance problems in a quick, efficient manner.

So much more than just a caveman Ice Age novel, gripping, eloquent, and exquisitely paced-- a terrific YA debut!

Let me just say up front that this is usually not the type of book I'd pick up. The thought of prehistory fantasy kind of makes me think of cavemen who go around and bash things in the head with a rock with grunts. How would you make this sexy or appealing? Well, turns out, you have to be Julie Eshbaugh.

I don't want anyone to have the stupid reservations I did, because seriously, no one, including Julie, would want to write or read about something like that. This book is gorgeous and pulse pounding as it builds up to the intense finish, and this unbeliever is a total groupie now.

Ivory and Bone by Julie Eshbaugh stars Kol, who is the eldest son of his clan, who is expected to marry, but the problem is, their clan has no women of marrying age. Enter Mya, the oldest daughter of a nearby clan, who seems to harbor some dark secrets in her troubled eyes, and she has nothing but biting and rude words for Kol, who let's face it, is the nicest guy in prehistoric history. This seems simple, but it's anything but, and as Eshbaugh eloquently and painstakingly takes us through both the past and present, Kol's world and his way of thinking are completely shaken and changed by a single girl.

I loved this book. I actually was reading two other books at the time, that were at the top of my TBR pile, and I abandoned them both to blaze through this book. Eshbaugh takes some really wonderful risks here. First, obviously is the fact it's a prehistory fantasy. I love that even this genre is innovative. Secondly, the novel is mostly written in partial second, where Mya is referred to as "you." This may seem jarring to the reader at first, but the usage of this narrative makes so much sense as it is a story told by Kol to Mya. Stories play such a large role in this novel, and in one particular twist, it takes on extra eerie meaning. I love how Eshbaugh effortlessly weaves storytelling into Kol's emotional journey.

And Kol. This guy... it's hard to even imagine someone nicer. Yes, he's naive, and he has character flaws, but he's an optimist and a good guy at the core. You can't help but root for him, and want to take him for yourself. Hey, if Mya isn't going to come around, there are many of us who will snap him up immediately! That said, Mya is a really fascinating character, and I love that she says so much without even uttering a word. And I won't talk too much about villains, but let's just say that I loved this person in a twisted way and am still thinking about what went down.

Overall, a really ambitious and beautifully written debut that takes a lot of risks and soars with flying colors. Eshbaugh is a writer to watch.

SO unique!

This gender-swapped adaptation of Pride & Prejudice set in prehistoric times with mammoths is seriously brilliant.

Basic plot: Kol's mother is desperate to have her sons married since their clan doesn't have any girls their age. Two girls from a different clan show up (Darcy & Bingley) and the familiar story unfolds. The stuff with Wickham turned into something that suit the setting better, but a surprising amount translated really well! The first 80% is narrated like Elizabeth is telling her version of how everything unfolded to Darcy.

It felt like it was set in Canada or somewhere like that based on the description of their kayaks, landscape, and wildlife? The descriptions of everything were so beautifully done and really brought the time period & setting to life. Like Kol measures time in how long it would take an echo to fade or a snowflake to melt, and describes his gangly younger brother as "hewn and awkward like an unfinished stone tool." There are so many cave analogies, too. I don't think I've ever read a book in this setting/time and it was just really cool to see it done so well!

People who aren't Jane Austen fans will still love this because it's an extremely loose retelling. It by no means relies on Jane Austen's plot and you probably wouldn't notice the similarities unless you're obsessed with P&P. I was having fun spotting how the two books could fit, but it really is an absolutely gorgeous story on its own!

Great debut novel from an obviously talented writer

This main plot is about Kol from the Manu clan and his focus on one woman, Mya. If there are any allusions going on it is with the movie 10,000 B.C. The story is told in first person from the perspective of Kol. Roughly for the first three quarters of the book the story is told in a narration from his perspective of his meeting her and following events that led them to where he starts to tell the story. Oral tradition is how history was passed from generation to generation in the past and this narration is reminiscent of that. The romantic in me absolutely loves this because he is so detailed in his thoughts, feelings, and honesty. He holds nothing back and I love how the author was able to keep the narration so well and from his perspective. Truly well written and not just his narration but she does an excellent job of the world construction for pre-historic times but unfortunately for me I kept envisioning 10,000 B.C.

Kol’s deepest desire is for Mya to see him, to want him, to trust him, to be his. Mya is from the Olen clan and there is a bad history between these two clans that almost led to a war five years ago. Kol is unaware of exactly what the catalyst was that led to the tensions between clans but his fascination with Mya is the spark that starts his mind pondering. That spark has opened his awareness to why Mya and her clan are not so open to the idea of the clans aligning and later on explains the poor treatment of his clan.

Seems that clan Olen also have a few skeletons in their closet. Unbeknownst to either clan Manu or Olen there is a third clan, the Bosha, in the background who have a nefarious interest in the extinction of the Olen elder, Chev, and his family. Through deception this third clan is almost able to bring their plan to fruition but things do not go as planned thanks to the bravery of Kol.

For most of the book, I found the whole character of Mya to be a turn off. I wanted Kol to just move on and seek greener pastures. Had I been his friend I would have definitely been trying to push him to be sensible because the girl has issues. In the last quarter of this book my feelings for her started to thaw because as things came to light I began to understand the “why” to her behaviors.

Kol, now there is a guy after my heart even if he is a bit naive. Yes, naive because he is fixated on a girl that is not worthy of him or seemingly interested in him. I found his character to be well rounded and well developed. The imagery that I see when I think back about his narration in the re-telling of his perspective of Mya just makes me love this character.

I felt that the ideas were developed, the sub plots were tied together nicely and that the writing style was original, although there are some issues with the modern voice in a pre-historic setting. The story was pretty slow until the end where the climax was quite tumultuous. Also, I am not against “insta-love” if it is believable to me. Kol was inexperienced with females and given how the story was told he was fascinated by Mya but is that due to lack of previous options or experience? It just came across as “puppy love” to me and was hard for me to take seriously. If he had previously had female options and took no interest and then he met Mya and wowwzza then I would have been able to take his fascination seriously.

The biggest turn off for me was the first person voice. Everything is from Kol’s perspective and I get nothing from Mya’s. There is no sidekick to add to the discussion and bring some deepening of the characters. So I just have his thoughts and feelings on everything but I felt that they were the thoughts and feelings of a pre-pubescent boy. Any seventeen-year-old boy would have some inner thoughts that were not pure and rational. I would have liked to known Mya’s side of things. Her inner thoughts, how she felt about Kol, her struggles and desires.

There was so much good with this story but there were just some issues that I could not get past to fangirl about this book. It is a great debut novel from an obviously talented writer and I am hoping for more in the next book.
