Great guide for the RMP Exam

I used Rita's PMP book in preparing for another PMI exam many years ago so thought I would give this a try and it did not dissapoint. I had 1 day to study the book due to a tight work deadline to pass the PMI-RMP exam.

The real value from this book is giving you the push to take the PMI-RMP exam and assuring you that if you study enough you will do well. Several other books only make risk management so difficult. The other good thing was the questions at the end of each chapter will expose your knowledge gaps. Read all the chapters and take every quiz and you will find several areas that need to be mastered. Apart from the PMI standard for risk management, this is certainly THE book you want on your shelf if you are a practicing risk manager or preparing for the PMI-RMP exam. Rita rocks as usual 5 stars *****.
One of the greatest project management teachers of our time. RIP Rita.

This review is from a project manager that is active with the PMI and holds multiple professional certifications. I have no affiliations with RMC whatsoever but the truth must be told. Any review which blandly states "I don't know why this book is so famous" should be ignored. I would gladly give you a firsthand review of this book which is still on my desk as a practicing risk manager many months later. I have just taken all the quizzes in this book for the second time months after passing the PMI-RMP exam and I dare say it was a great exercise that will find your gaps. Brought all those memories back. Do yourself a favor, get this book and you will be laughing all the way to the PMI-RMP cert bank.

Save Your Money! Rita isn't even a RMP...how can she write a Prep Guide????

I loved Rita's PMP book, but this one falls way short of her earlier efforts. I bought this to prepare for the RMP.

My complaints:

1. Too much fluff. "Tricks of the Trade" take up over 15% of the book and were marginally useful but distracted from the risk management processes.

2. Hard to read. Some of there Headers were not structurally correct. I feel that at this level of professionalism that this text and presentation should be perfect.

3. Not organized well. Missing basic summary charts, skimpy glossary.

4. The book lacked "easy to find" inputs and output summaries for each of the processes. THIS IS BASIC STUFF!!! Out of desperation, I created my own table. I did some googling and did find some pre-created input/output charts, but shame on Rita for not putting this simple, summary in each chapter.

5. I think 35% of the book is filled with useless forms. A form for this, a form for that. These could have been condensed and placed in the Appendix. I found them distracting to have 5-7 pages of blank "you fill in the forms". Then there was mention of finding more risk management forms on her website, which I did look and couldn't find them. They might have been there, but there was so much wading through "sales propaganda" that I just gave up.

6. The Glossary was so impossibly weak. There were so many instances where I couldn't find a word or phrase that she used in one of the chapters. For example, in Chapter 2, "Risk Tolerances" were addressed and I found that reference in the Glossary, but the companion concept "Risk Thresholds" was not listed. This is the inconsistency that drove me crazy using this text. I ended up just using the PMI RMP Glossary.

7. NOW FOR THE SHOW STOPPER!!!..It just dawned on me, Rita Mulchay isn't even a RMP....I should have caught that little omission earlier. I checked her bio, back cover and preface information. SERIOUSLY....How can she possibly write a prep book for the certification if she hasn't taken/passed it herself. Now I understand....why this book is so weak.

There was many items not covered in this book that were on the test. Lucky for me I am a Six Sigma Green Belt, ISO trained and ITIL so I had seen these "surprise" items before. If you buy the book, don't use this as your exclusive reference.

Super and excellent

I enjoy this book because of the way it was written, its not only written not to just make you pass the exam but to be a guru in project risk management. As a SAP consultant, we have problems of risk management at projects and often project exceed budget because of failure to analyse risks in a knowledgeable way. With the tips of this books, projects can be a success and within budget(timewise). Keep it up and it's a good book indeed.

About the Author

BILL NYE holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University, and worked as an engineer at Boeing before creating and hosting his Emmy award-winning PBS/Discovery Channel show. He holds six Honorary Doctorate degrees.

Climate Change is NOT unstoppable.

This is one book everyone should read within the near future. why? because Bill Nye, like all great science enthusiasts, knows how to make complicated fields of science accessible to all layman readers. Bill Nye makes the case why Climate Change, one of the single most important problems facing the world today, needs to be addressed. He thoroughly goes case by case about the many nuances that climate science has to offer when being studied. His accessible and witty prose, mixed with his ability to remain on point is absolutely riveting. But probably the best part about this book is that it is so convincing and applicable, that anyone who reads this will thoroughly understand why climate change is not a hoax. Climate Change is the top priority on our to do list right now. Because, one musk themselves: should we sit here and do nothing and remain comfortable, or should we risk losing a little bit of it in order to save not only the planet, but for our future children?

“Unstoppable” is a wonderful, upbeat plea to make a better world through science. It focuses on the many environmental challenges we face as a planet and provides hope through science and engineering on what we can do to rise to address them. Mechanical engineer, science educator, and Emmy award-winning TV personality Bill Nye the Science Guy provides readers with yet another gem. This enjoyable 350-page book includes thirty-five chapters that cover a wide-range of topics pertaining to environmental issues.

Positives:
1. Entertaining, practical, well-written and well-researched book for the masses.
2. A great topic, how to harness science to change the world for the better. “To the Next Great Generation. Embrace science. Solve problems. Make things. Change the world.”
3. A pleasant, upbeat, engaging and sometimes even humorous tone throughout. Some of the topics are indeed alarming but Nye’s upbeat tone and practical knowhow emits confidence.
4. There is a love of science and engineering that is palpable throughout the book. Bill Nye loves the knowledge that science provides and the problem-solving attitude of engineering. “Engineers use science every day to build things and to solve problems, sometimes seemingly intractable problems.”
5. Many great topics discussed but this book revolves around climate change and its impact. “In recent years, you’ve probably heard a great many people speak about addressing climate change with lists of things we shouldn’t be doing—like burning fossil fuels, coal especially. That guidance is useful, but we need to focus more on the things we aggressively should be doing—like developing ways to store renewable energy.”
6. Hits back against science denialism. “The warming of our world has gone in lockstep with the increasing amounts of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases we have dumped into the atmosphere. The connection between climate change and human activity is akin to the connection between cancer and smoking.” “What on Earth makes anyone think that 97% of the world’s climate scientists are wrong?”
7. Does a great job of making difficult topics easy for the public to understand. “Most of the electrical power in the world—everything produced from coal, oil, natural gas, or nuclear material—relies on boiling water to spin a turbine that runs a generator.” “One of their insights is that there is no such thing as “cold,” at least in this scientific sense. There is instead only the absence of heat.”
8. One of the joys of reading this book is the discussion of big or innovative ideas to solve problems. “I’m talking about a substitute for asphalt. Instead of a jet-black parking lot, with an albedo less than 10 percent, I’m imagining a nearly white parking lot, with an albedo up around 70 percent.” “The idea, then, is to produce bubbles in water to make the water more reflective on purpose.”
9. A reasonable look at nuclear energy. “The primary appeal of nuclear energy is what it does not produce: carbon. Right now the two biggest zero-carbon energy sources in the United States are hydroelectric power and nuclear power.”
10. Plenty of interesting factoids throughout the book. “We get about 19 percent of our electricity from nuclear plants, 6 percent from dams, and about 5 percent from wind and solar.”
11. Solar energy. “The big idea of space-based power is to collect solar energy above the atmosphere—where sunshine is continuous, up where we can get at the full spectrum—and put it on Earth where we can make it almost directly into electricity. It’s a big engineering idea.”
12. A plea to transform the grid.
13. Explains the quest for more storage and some interesting ideas in the horizon.
14. A look at fuel flexibility. “Because of their agricultural situation, Brazilians are able to use their ethanol effectively. Most of their vehicles are fuel-flexible. They have sensors in the fuel system that sense how much alcohol is mixed with the gas, and they adjust the timing of the ignition spark to match the fuel on board.”
15. The three advantages of railroads over cars on the roads.
16. A look at improving getting freshwater to the world. “We just need the magical material that separates water from salt as readily as the mangroves and the seabirds do.”
17. How to improve feeding the world and GMOs. “If we add it all up, the economic sector that uses the most of Earth’s resources and produces the largest environmental change is our agriculture.” “A lot of the resistance I see to GMOs has less to do with the perceived safety of the food or the ecosystems than with a basic mistrust in large corporations—especially large industrial chemical corporations.”
18. A recurring humorous theme, environmental competition Bill Nye has with his neighbor actor friend Ed Begley. Nye demonstrates how his home is his personal lab for efficiency improvements. “Now I’m a big-time minor celebrity with no obligations and a deep desire to crush Begley, so I had two separate inline or tankless water heaters installed.”
19. The reality of it all. “The less we do to address climate change now, the more regulation we will have in the future.”
20. Loved the chapters on space exploration. “If your rocket were perfectly efficient, you would need about 500 million Joules to lift one ton of payload to a height of 100 kilometers (62 miles), which is a common definition of where “space” begins.”
21. A practical recommendation to improve the planet. “In general, no one has the guts or the political influence sufficient to establish a carbon fee or tax or shared financial burden regarding climate change.”

Negatives:
1. Lacking in visual content (graphs, timelines, and diagrams).
2. Some on the right may take issue with some of the political criticism. The truth is it is done so at a minimal.
3. No notes.
4. No formal bibliography.

In summary, this is a wonderful book on how to improve the planet. Bill Nye does a wonderful job of sharing his love for science and the power of engineering to solve big problems, including climate change. It’s a plea for action with a hopeful can do tone. I highly recommend it!

A Look At Climate Change Without Preaching

What an amazing book. If you're new to the Nye, this is a great representation of how fantastic he is at communicating scientific ideas, issues and solutions. Climate change is a serious challenge not only for humanity but for the earth as a whole. We're homeowners of a beautiful planet and he describes detailed solutions to some of our challenging problems regarding energy consumption and production.

I love that this book is not just another negative look at what it means to live in a world where the climate is changing. There is no blame placed on anyone and it truly looks at it from a thoughtful and scientific view.

Five stars for this amazing book!

Sometimes things don’t go as we plan or even as we’d like them to go! A great 2nd Chance Love Story!

GOOD GIRLS DON’T DATE ROCK STARS by Codi Gary is one of the best, realistic, gripping, angst-filled, down to earth, and emotional second chance romances to come along in a long time. Faced with mistakes of the past, protecting her son, and their privacy, Gemma realizes the pain she’s caused Travis by not telling him about her feelings, and his son. Now she journeys a path that makes her question every aspect of Travis’ reasoning for following her to Rock Canyon and wanting to be with her and making a go of the marriage that shouldn’t have happened. Does he truly want her or just the connection to his son? Will his lifestyle as a well-known country music star destroy the simple life she leads and her son’s chances of growing up normal?

Some may see Gemma as an angry, unlikable character who snarks at Travis every chance she gets, but I saw her as a woman with whom I could connect and understand her fear, her trepidation, and suspicions because she’d been forced to stand alone against the world to protect her son. Travis wants it all, he wants the family he never had, the unconditional love that only a child can give, and the woman who has always claimed his heart and his dreams. Gemma just has a hard time believing that what she’d always wanted for her life was truly happening, and with the only man she’s every loved.

Codi Gary has created a story about a teenage mother who has carried a secret for ten years always wishing and always wondering what might have been had she’d been brave enough to reveal it when the time was right. Now when the time is at its worst, she’s forced to reveal it and bear the consequences of the pain she causes for both, Travis and her son, as well as friends and herself. I loved this story. I connected with everyone in it, I loved the friendships that exist between Gemma, Gracie, and Mike of which Travis was once part and he now hopes to rekindle. I loved the way the town rallied around the star-crossed lovers and only saw the good in what Gemma thought was the worst. I loved that Travis never gave up hope even when he thought all was lost.

I highly recommend GOOD GIRLS DON’T DATE ROCK STARS by Codi Gary because it’s a story that could’ve happened to anyone - well, except maybe the country-rock star aspect - but for only by the grace of God, go you. If you want to fall in love with an emotional, snagged from the headlines, could’ve really happened, second chance romance, read GOOD GIRLS DON’T DATE ROCK STARS by Codi Gary.

Gemma Carlson went to Vegas to attend a Book Convention, and not to wake up married, most especially to her ex-boyfriend who is now a famous country rock-star.

It was supposedly a weekend only kind of fun, and then when she leaves Vegas, it would just stay there, and not haunt her. But she assumed wrong, because apparently, Travis Bowers, was eager to patch things up between them. So when she ran from him, he followed her. He let her get away all those years ago, he wasn’t going to let her get away this time.

Gemma had always been his first love, and a woman he can’t forget. He might have been famous, and he has all the money in the world, but Gemma had never been far from his thoughts. The moment he saw an opportunity in Vegas, he immediately grabbed it. He invited her over a few drinks, which led to that impromptu marriage, and yes, she ran away from him the moment she was able to. When he tried to follow her, he was in for the biggest surprise in his life when he found out he has a nine-year old son.

"Ten years ago he’d been a kid, unsure of what he wanted. He was a man now. And he wasn’t giving up his wife without a damn good reason."

Suddenly, her quiet town life turns a 180, and she was once again the talk of the town.

Despite being frustrated over Gemma’s actions – the running away, and the impulsiveness: you gotta let her have it! Because she’s a great mother to Charlie, she even allowed him to know his father. All she wanted was to protect him from Travis’ lifestyle. She didn’t want any harm to come to her son – so you can’t really blame her if she kept on pushing him away or she kept this secret for a whole period of time. When she was pregnant, Travis was on the verge of stardom, and being a young pregnant girl with all those weird hormones kicking inside your system, not to mention fear and yes, her impulsiveness, she broke up with him instead of telling him she was pregnant.

Travis, on the other hand, had grew up in foster care so he knows what it is like to grow up without a family. The moment he knew of his child’s existence, he took it with arms wide open. He didn’t know the first thing of becoming a father, but he did it with flying colors. Day by day, he creeps into their lives, and embeds himself into it. In fairness to them, they try to be civil and good parents whenever Charlie is around, and talk about their issues when he wasn’t.

Despite being okay, the past is still an issue, and not to mention TRUST. It was the elephant in the room they didn’t want to address at first, until it blew up into their faces and tore apart whatever it is that they started building. Both of them can be stubborn and needed a good, painful wakeup call before they can settle their issues. It was a long, rocky journey before the reconciliation. I started hating Gemma somewhere, but the grand gestures at the end of the story - makes up for everything else.

I have always adored plots like this, it’s old, it’s reused countless of times which probably makes it harder for the author on how to make it different from the rest. But Codi Gary made sure Good Girls Don’t Date Rock Stars will be different enough to make you want to finish the book once you get started. It’s romance will make you swoon, characters that you will love and will annoy you at one point, and steamy scenes that will get you hot. But what I love most about this book is its emphasis on the importance of trust and honesty in a relationship. Without this two, a relationship could never be possible.

"Maybe that’s what makes it so hard. When you spend years thinking and dreaming about someone and have them fall back into your life? Sounds like fate to me."

The chemistry between Travis and Gemma sparks and the sex is hot.

“’You don’t even know who I am anymore,’ she said softly. ‘I’d like to remedy that, if you’re willing,’ he said, brushing his mouth over hers. “What do you say? One more chance?’”

Gemma Carlson was a shy, chubby girl who got bullied quite a bit when she was young. She learned to box up her emotions and just roll with it. Then sophomore year of high school, a new boy moved to town, Travis Bowers. Travis was “the hot musician with the killer smile and drawling voice” and she had the biggest crush on him. Turns out he also liked her. He was an aspiring musician and was signed shortly after graduation. Only problem was she was pregnant. She wanted to tell him, but would that make him give up his dreams to stay with her? She couldn’t risk it, so she kept it from him. Now ten years later they are staying in the same Vegas hotel, you can only imagine what happens next.

“He could hold out hope for second chances, but he couldn’t lose himself in her too soon”

I really enjoyed this book. It is a fairly typical romance, but it kept me hooked and wanting to know what would happen next. All romances have that bit of drama that tears the couple apart. Usually I think to myself, oh he/she’s being ridiculous. In this book, the drama is believable. The issues this couple are dealing with are realistic as are the fall out and resolution. The chemistry between Travis and Gemma sparks and the sex is hot. I give this book 4.5 stars and 3 hands down the pants. I would definitely read other books in this series.

Introduction

THE "NEW" QUESTION BASED SELLING

Selling has become increasingly more difficult. Prospects have less time...yet decision makers are on the receiving end of more sales calls than ever before. With a boom in the number of products being offered, "No"has become the standard customer response, and the vast majority of these calls end in rejection.

This creates an interesting dilemma for salespeople and managers. When the risk of rejection is high, sales productivity tends to be very low. QBS reverses this trend by showing salespeople that the best way to increase their probability of success is to decrease their risk of failure.

Since I published my first book (Secrets of Questions Based Selling) some thirteen years ago, the selling environment has changed-in some ways dramatically, while other changes are very subtle. That's the difference between my original book and this updated version, the new Secrets of Question Based Selling. Now that I have trained hundreds of sales teams over the last fifteen years, I've discovered the QBS methodology has evolved significantly from my first work. Not surprisingly, many of the base concepts still apply-things like the need to establish credibility, pique the customer's interest, and minimize your risk of failure-all of which are indeed timeless. But, my intention with this updated version of the book was to enhance those concepts by including many of the metaphors, anecdotes, and syllogisms that have made Question Based Selling the top-rated sales course that our clients have ever experienced.

Ultimately, selling is a creative act-one that requires salespeople to go out into their respective markets and create business opportunities that otherwise wouldn't exist. This means knocking on unfamiliar doors. It also means picking up the telephone and calling new prospect accounts. Of course, once you get in, the focus changes from engagement to further developing the opportunity. This includes uncovering prospect needs, building value around your solutions, and securing the prospect's commitment to move forward.

Sounds easy, doesn't it?

It isn't. In fact, for most salespeople it's becoming increasingly difficult to secure a precious slice of the customer's time and attention, not to mention cracking into new prospect opportunities.

I am perhaps the only author/trainer who is willing to come right out and state that there is a problem in the world of sales training-where it has become very unclear which sales programs are the most effective given all of the conflicting information floating around the marketplace.

The positioning of different sales training courses is crazy! While one program touts the value of "Getting to Yes," another program focuses on the value of "Getting to the No." So which is it? Should we be shooting for a "yes," or "no"? Similarly, consultative selling has become a common buzzword in training circles for some time now, but the interpretations of what "consultative selling" is runs the gamut from SPIN Selling, to Power Base Selling, Solution Selling, Target Account Selling, and Strategic Selling, each of which contradicts the next in one way or another. Trust me, I've been through all of these programs (and more) during my years as a sales rep and also as a manager. Knowing where to turn for success can be very confusing.

The truth is, most of the sales training that has been delivered over the past twenty years has been process oriented. Don't get me wrong. Defining the steps of the sales process and having some sense of organizational consistency is important and necessary. Formalizing a sales process was particularly faddish back in the 1990s, which is when many of these programs really took off.

What process training attempts to do, however, is define the steps of the sales process. For example, I just read an article written by an entrepreneur espousing the value of the five-step model that he learned while at Procter & Gamble. Step 1: Summarize the Situation. Step 2: State the Idea. Step 3: Explain It. Step 4: Discuss. Step 5: Close. The author of this article refers to this five-step regimented sales process as "brilliant."

Other companies promote a slightly different sales process, where Step 1 is: "Identifying New Opportunities," followed by Step 2: "Qualify," Step 3: "Uncover Needs," Step 4: "Propose Solutions" ...and so on.

Whichever model you settle on is immaterial from the QBS point of view. I say this because the steps are irrelevant. If you looked more closely at the reps using the Procter & Gamble model, you would very quickly notice that some of them were successful, while others continually struggled to keep their heads above water. If they are all using the same process model, why are their sales results so different?

The difference between success and failure at most companies is not related to the brilliance of whoever outlined the steps of the sales process. The difference between success and failure is more closely related to the execution of the steps within the sales process. Therefore, instead of just redefining the sales process, what salespeople and managers really want to know is something else. They want to know how to identify more new opportunities? How to be more effective at qualifying new opportunities? How do you uncover more needs in order to give yourself an opportunity to provide more value? And, how can you close more sales faster?

Question Based Selling very specifically focuses on sales effectiveness-identifying those strategies and techniques that will increase the salesperson's probability of success, while at the same time discarding whatever may reduce your risk of rejection. To me, success is about execution. Simply put, salespeople who are killing it are doing so because of their ability to successfully execute the various steps of the sales process. On the flip side, sellers who are not executing effectively face a significant disadvantage.

It's worth noting that the actual steps of the sales process are pretty consistent from company to company. Thus, just identifying the steps of the sale does not afford you any advantage over your competitors who have a similarly formalized sales process in place.

How well are you executing each of these steps? That's a question only you can answer. But, I must tell you that I have yet to meet a salesperson who didn't want to take their game to the next level.

With regard to QBS methodology, ask yourself this question: Why do companies all over the world spend millions of dollars telling salespeople what to say, but they invest almost nothing when it comes to teaching them what to ask?

I still can't figure out why most of the sales training offered today is geared toward teaching people to sound the same as everyone else. Back when I was a fledgling salesperson, I tried to do everything in my power to differentiate myself from the competition, as opposed to commoditizing my company's value proposition with industry buzzwords.

Today, the effectiveness of the individual salesperson has become more important than the products they sell or the company they represent. All you have to do is glance around your industry and you will see that some salespeople are more significantly more effective than others, even though they are selling the same types of products to the same target audience.

Therefore, the real challenge sellers face is less about defining the steps of the sales process, and more to do with figuring out how to execute more effectively. Things like: How can you pique the prospect's interest to penetrate more new opportunities? How do you earn enough credibility to compete for mindshare from key decision makers within important target accounts? How can you create the sense of urgency needed to move deals forward? Or better still, how can you cause skeptical customers to "want to" share information with a salesperson they don't yet know or trust? As well as, how can you increase your "return on invested sales effort," enough to secure an "unfair" advantage over the competition? The goal of executing more effectively is ultimately about understanding how to close more deals, at higher margins, in reduced time, and with less effort.

Secret #1

Effective execution is more important than just defining the steps of the sales process.

Unfortunately, the sales profession in general has responded poorly to recent business trends. As prospects and customers have had to become more judicious with their time, salespeople have started pushing even harder to get a foot in the door. How do prospects respond to being pushed? Most push back in some way. When sellers call, some prospects get frustrated and hang up immediately. Others program their phones to roll directly into a voice-mail system, or they use caller ID to hold salespeople at arm's length. Invariably, that means the next salesperson who calls on the account will have to work even harder than the last. It also means they inherit the negative baggage created by all the previous callers.

When you combine reluctant prospects with pushy salespeople, it's not surprising that the average success rate when contacting new prospects has declined significantly. Depending on which article you read, the average "hit rate" for engaging new prospects is between 2 and 5 percent. So, out of every one hundred sales calls, the average salesperson will uncover only a small handful of qualified opportunities. What if we could change that? What if this initial call number could be increased to as much as 70 or 80 percent? Would that help your selling efforts?

Does "New" just mean a rewrite to you? Not with Tom Freese...

This "gold edition" takes QBS to the next level. I first started my QBS journey 14 years ago and this latest from Tom just reinforces that I made the RIGHT decision! What I like most is that Tom does not let his thinking stagnate. On the contrary this rewrite contains "net new" information that leaves traditional approaches further behind. Given the evolving markets that we sell into, just taking the same old traditional tired approach (that others espouse) to selling makes no sense. Well with "Secrets of Question Based Selling" we now have an expert guide on how to best rethink our approach to selling to keep up with our customers and more importantly stay ahead of the competition.

I have been selling for over 30 years...and keeping up with the information from Tom Freese allows me to refresh my thinking, engage in a more confident way and come across as more than just another sales rep. QBS also causes my customers and prospects to engage in more productive conversations, start to ask me for assistance before I even start selling and allows me to create the kind of competitive separation in the market I need to succeed.

For students of the practice of selling, QBS is at graduate school level. While the content is challenging and powerful, Thomas Freese's writing style and format make it readily doable. I've learned more from him in a few days careful, focused, thoughtful study than from all previous sales reading combined. This book has closed a bunch of gaps and opened a world of opportunity. Exceptional value.

I have a large collection of "sales books". The reason why I put Question-Based Selling (QBS) so high on my list is mainly due to the content being successfully used across multiple industries and many different sales environments. There are a few chapters that could be updated (reason for 4 and not 5 stars), but the fundamentals of asking the right questions will always be key to being a successful salesman. QBS does not replace predictable revenue, The Sales Bible, or Challenger Sale. It is a compliment to all other sales processes. I have used what I learned door to door, to selling B2B SaaS solutions currently.

Salute To The Sailor

Sailor Jerry is a legend--the likes of which is almost impossible to find today. He was both an artistic and technical genius and certainly deserving of the title Tattoo Master. He was also a bit of an old coot.
Sailor Jerry is a lot like a dad. Though you don't necessarily agree with all of his views, he's still an inspiration. I'm apprenticing as a tattoo artist and he sets the standard that I strive for every day. Not just as a good tattoo artist. Not even a great one. But the best. I'm proud to have Sailor Jerry's beautiful illustrations tattooed on my skin. A tribute, so to speak, to the master.
This is a great read regardless of your being tattooed or not. It explains a lot about tattoo history, particularly the development of the shading needle, and the importance of military symbolism in Hawaii. And Sailor Jerry's illustrations are just beyond description. Perfect in every detail.
A very endearing book. Makes you want to talk to your dad about the war and get "Twin Screws" tattooed on your butt cheeks. (Or is that just me?)

A Must-Read!

I'm hooked on all things sea, sailor, and pirate related right now. Ever since watching Pirates of the Caribbean recently I have found great CDs to hear sea shanties and even a book called What Do You Do with a Drunken Sailor?. With that said, I am happy to have this new book in my collection. It's crazy to see it selling for $75, since I found a used copy at a store for only $30. Apparently, that was a steal. Is it valuable? Most definitely.

Sailor Jerry Collins is the father of the mid-20th century renaissance or tattooing, and his life is worth honoring! Among beautiful illustrations, Collins' career is shared through the eyes of his student D.E. Hardy (of the Ed Hardy brand). His insights are funny and witty of a pretty awesome legend.

worth every penny... a great book

what a fantastic book! not only is it filled with great pictures of his flash, it also has a ton of his sketches, stencils, great photos of his work on skin, and letters that illuminate the life of the man that gave us this wonderful art. it is an in-depth look at the life and times of sailor jerry and his honolulu of the 40's, 50's and 60's. awesome, awesome, awesome! as an aspiring tattooist, i was deeply inspired not only in pursuit of the art as a career, but by looking at the photos of his work in the flesh, it has also given me direction for how i want to cover my own skin. i would highly recommend this book. it is worth every penny.

Very informative

This book gives the non professional welder the basic information needed to weld steel and aluminum. It provides the metal information as well as the welder and filler rod/wire info. It is devided into MIG and TIG sections so that you don't get confused. It is easy to read and it also gives you charts to make your different settings.

This book looks like it was done originally as a textbook or workbook for a welding course. I found the information to be fairly simplistic and out of date.

TIG & MIG Welding

Look at the price of this product! If you believe that you get what you pay for in this world, this book is not for you. It's just too light in useful information on TIG welding. It's totally outdated with photos of antiquated machines and it gives little information on the techniques of TIG welding. In essence it reads like an introduction to TIG welding with only 77 pages (many of which consist of test questions) dedicated to this subject. Even used at $34, it offers less insights than the free information you can find online. Yes, it's a good introduction to TIG, but no, it's not worth the cheapest price you will buy it for. Keep hunting for something better.
