Dennis Glover is a professional speechwriter for some of Australia's most prominent political and business leaders and an academic historian of oratory. He is a graduate of Monash University and he took a PhD in History at Cambridge University. Scholarly, gem of a book

For anyone who has to go beyond a once every 10 years "unaccustomed as I am to public speaking..." moment, this book will explain a great many mysteries about what makes amazing oratory. Drawing on a couple of thousand years of examples, the patterns and methods are illustrated clearly. There is an element of theatre, but the greatest speeches share a logic and approach to their story-telling that might prove just as applicable to your monthly project update for a steering committee as rousing the troops for battle. Think 'Alain de Botton on speech-making' as a quick summary.

Great book

I am currently a CRNA student. I bought this book to use on my cardiac rotation. It was very helpful to help me prepare for my cases. I don't have much of a cardiac background and this book was easy to red but also provided detail that I needed for my cases. I really liked the amount of pictures. I am more of a visual learner and it helped to be able to visualize what the author was talking about. Overall I think this book is a great resource.

Comprehensive yet easy-to-read bible type book for the anesthesiology resident

I'm a PGY3 anesthesiology resident that used this book for my CT/CV months. Its a great book, makes learning CT more comprehensive if you read this at home concurrently throughout the month. Its in an outline format, sort of like how Goljian pathology was written in medical school which i really liked. I cannot think of any topic that was lacking in this book, or improvements that could be added to it. Like all books, there are some areas where there is room to disagree with fine details like drug dosages etc. Not sure if its a regional difference, but in Texas I've never seen nitroprusside used once, and this book relies on this drug as a first line medication in many circumstances. With any type of learning, you should probably read from multiple sources and never treat any book as a bible. I think I'm going to read kaplan essentials next.

As Curator of Contemporary Design at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum since 1992, she has produced numerous exhibitions and books, including Mechanical Brides: Women and Machines from Home to Office (1993), Mixing Messages: Graphic Design and Contemporary Culture (1996), Letters from the Avant-Garde (1996), Skin: Surface, Substance + Design (2002) and―most recently―Beautiful Users: Designing for People (2014). Lupton is a 2007 recipient of the AIGA Gold Medal, one of the highest honors given to a graphic designer or design educator in the US.

Poster design insights, for everyone who enjoys posters

"How Posters Work" is one of several new books published in celebration of the reopening of Cooper Hewett, the Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City, in December 2014 after a three-year renovation project. This book is authored (in some parts) and edited (in other parts) by Ellen Lupton, a Senior Curator at Cooper Hewett, the director of a Graphic Design master's degree program, and the writer of many important and influential books on design. In a little over 200 pages, filled with over 300 illustrations, the volume articulates several guiding concepts and shows numerous examples of "how posters work," resulting in a publication that is beneficial to working designers, design students, and those who simply appreciate the power and beauty possible in a 2-D printed message.

The first 70 pages of the book are dedicated to several well-illustrated essays, starting with Lupton's "Vision is a Process." She notes that the purpose of the book is to explain "how designers see" and to explore the many ways in which graphic designers apply key principles to achieve a communication goal. Then Lupton expands her premise by describing components of a graphic designer's methodology, such as "vision is active," "vision is immersive," and "vision is multisensory."

In the next essay, Caitlin Condell, another Cooper Hewett staff member, describes "How Posters Are Made," starting with the lithography process (invented in 1798) and continuing with technologies ranging from silk screen printing and various photographic processes to relatively recent innovations like digital printing and laser cutting.

The next few essays examine works by specific designers (sometimes with the designer explaining his own posters), including E. McKnight Kauffer, Bruno Munari, and a series of Dutch posters that experiment with use of a focal point.

Karrie Jacobs' essay "Night Discourse," first published in 1992, discusses political "protest" posters that appeared at night on New York City streets in the 1980s and 90s, including work by professional artists along with posters by "those who have anger but fewer skills."

In the final essay, "Collecting Posters," Gail S. Davidson of Cooper Hewett gives a history of how and why this museum added posters to its collection-- starting with an unsolicited gift of posters from World Wars I and II that arrived at Cooper Hewett in 1949, but expanding into deliberate efforts to document achievement in poster art from around the world, and throughout 20th and 21st century design history.

The sample works include famous names of the design field-- Rand, Bass, Glaser, Scher, Beall, van de Velde, Klutsis (spelled here as "Klucis"), Muller-Brockman, Matter, Vignelli, and Sagmeister, to mention only a few-- but the posters displayed from these iconic designers aren't always the "classics" seen in other compilations. Plenty of lesser-known designers' posters are featured as well.

The almost-square pages (about 9 inches by not-quite-10 inches) provide ample display space for the posters, many of which are full-page or half-page size, and all of the posters are reproduced in full color. The binding allows the book to open almost-flat for effective perusal of each poster. And although Amazon lists this book as "hardcover," the covers are more like a sturdy paperboard, which doesn't detract from the overall elegance of the volume, and makes the book surprisingly lightweight.

It's also surprisingly inexpensive. Therefore, I can't think of any reason that a poster aficionado (professional or amateur) wouldn't want to add this book to your collection.

Great little read

This was a great little read. It was mentioned by an author in another book I was reading and I thought I would pick it up. Coming in under 50 pages it really packs a lot of information into it's brief format. The sections in the book are:

Prologue
1. He Has More Who Needs Less

4. Devoting Time to the Good Use of Time
5. Put Your Heart Into What You Are Doing
6. First One Thing, Then Another
7. Make Haste Slowly
8. Many Measures of Oil Can be Poured Into a Barrel Full of Nuts
9. Setting Time Limits
10. Growing On The Inside
11. Remember That One Day You Too Are Going to Die
Epilogue

The intent and focus of the book is to help us live better lives, in the prologue the author states: ""Teach us," the Psalmist asks the Lord, "to number our days, so that we may get a heart of wisdom" (Ps 90:12). Each of our lives is a learning process that can never be repeated. So let us wholeheartedly make the Psalmist's prayer our own." And this book is a great little tool to help remind us about what is important especially in the use of the finite hours we have here on earth. I must confess that while reading I reflected upon my recent use of time: movies, tv, books, and games and came to the conclusion that I need to tighten down my focus yet again. And this book helps us to do so.

Rafael also reminds is to "The task at hand then becomes the most important thing we have to do, and we can dedicate ourselves wholeheartedly to it." That was the advice by Saint Josemaria Escriva that the author heard directly, and it is very sound advice for us also. For especially in this digital age it is so easy to be distracted and multitask especially on our electronic devices.

The final quote I highlighted my first time through this books was "And here is the ultimate secret, the key to everything: loving. Love is the highest and most noble human activity, redeeming every moment we consecrate to it. From love stems diligence, love in action, proper to creatures subject to time, who must strive to act within the constraints imposed by our corporeal condition, with its servitude resulting from sin." The greatest of these is love.

This is a little book I know I will be going back to again as a reminder from time to time. It is a great little read and wonderful reminder. I am sure you would benefit from giving it an honest read.

Since the mid-1970s, the structural testing of the loaded printed circuit boards (PCBs) has relied very heavily on the use of the so-called in-circuit "bed-of-nails" technique. This method of testing makes use of a fixture containing a bed-of-nails to access individual devices on the board through test lands laid into the copper interconnect, or other convenient contact points. Testing then proceeds in two phases: the power-off tests followed by power-on tests. Power-off tests check the integrity of the physical contact between nail and the on-board access point. They then carry out open and shorts tests based on impedance measurements. Power-on tests apply stimulus to a chosen device on a board, with an accompanying measurement of the response from that device. Other devices that are electrically connected to the device-under-test (DUT) are usually placed into a safe state (a process called "guarding"). In this way, the tester is able to check the presence, orientation, and bonding of the DUT in place of the board.
Fundamentally, the in-circuit bed-of-nails technique relies on physical access to all devices on a board. Such was the technique in the mid-1980s when a group of concerned test engineers got together to examine the problem and its solutions. The method of solution was based on the concept of a serial shift register around the boundary of the device - hence the name "boundary scan".
Principles of Boundary Scan
Each primary input signal and primary output signal is supplemented with a multi-purpose memory element called a boundary-scan cell. Cells on device primary inputs are referred to as "input cells"; cells on the primary output are referred to as "output cells". The input and outputs is relative to the core logic of the device. The collection of the boundary cells is configured into a parallel-in, parallel-out shift register. A parallel load operation, called a "capture" operation, causes signal values on device input pins to be loaded into input cells and, signal values passing from the core logic to the device output pins to be loaded into output cells. A parallel unload operation called an "update" operation causes signal values already present in the output scan cells to be passes out through the device output pins. Signal values already present in the input scan cells will be passed into the core logic.
Data can also be shifted around the shift register, in serial mode, starting from a dedicated device input called TDI and terminating at a dedicated device output pin called TDO. The test clock TCK, is fed in via another dedicated device input pin and the mode of operation is controlled by a dedicated TMS serial control signal. At the device level, the boundary scan elements contribute nothing to the functionality of the core logic. In fact, the boundary scan path is independent of the function of the device. On board the four; boundary scan devices are connected from one to the next in a serial format. The TDI input to the board is connected to the TDI input of the first device; the TDO output of the first device is connected to the TDI input of the next device; and so forth; creating a global scan path terminating at the TDO connecter output. TCK is connected in parallel to each device, TMS the control pin works similarly.
In this way, particular tests can be applied to the device interconnects via the global scan path by loading the stimulus into the appropriate device output scan cells via the edge connecter TDI (shift-in operation), applying the stimulus (update operation), capturing the responses at the device input scan cells (capture operation), and shifting the response values out to the edge connector TDO (shift-out operation). Essentially the boundary scan cells can be thought of as the "virtual nail".
There are four modes to be aware of normal, update, capture, and serial shift. During normal mode, data_in is passed straight through to Data_out. During update mode, the content of the output register is passed through the Data_out. During capture mode, the Data_in signal is routed to the shift register and the value is captured by the next ClockDr state. During shift mode, the scan_out of the register flip flop is passed through to the scan_in of the next via a hard wired path.

Boundary scan can be easy or it can be confusing - this book makes it easy

When I needed to write a few JTAG/TAP drivers this book was the best reference I could find. When I was debugging a TAP bug this book was perfect. So, despite the shortness of this review, the book is complete and well written.
