Dazed & Confused

This text was required reading in an Internet marketing class I took. As an about-to-graduate business major, I felt the book often strayed off it's subject matter (e-commerce) and too often went into excrutiating detail about how businesses operate. Although I did not read every chapter, the sections I did read were repetitive and confusing to follow. For example, the concept of "catalog content management" is defined and discussed at least three times in one chapter. To say this book is thorough is an understatement. There are many sections that could have been deleted with no loss of meaning to the subject matter. The book is probably OK for beginning business majors who have yet to take lots of business classes. However, for those who are more familiar with business, you will probably find yourself skimming over this text looking for the information you want. If you're looking for a general overview of e-commerce, this is not the book for you. If you want more detail than you thought existed . . . well, I'm selling my copy in the used book section of this site :)

The affects of child abuse in adults written into a novel.

This detailed review by Instaread of the book, God Help the Child by Toni Morrison, starts off with an 8 page summary. The original novel "focuses on how adults are affected by what happened to them when they were children." Bride, originally called Lulu Ann, has a mother who despises her due to the darkness of her skin. (Bride's parents are both lighter skinned.) How does this affect Bride?

In the "Main Characters" we are provided with short bios on ten characters. This is followed with more detailed analysis on five of those characters and is really informative. The majority of the characters in the book suffered significant trauma in their childhood affecting their adult lives.

Themes discussed are:
Effects of childhood trauma on adult lives - lasting scars
Lies, guilt, kidnapping, racism and more
Element of an enchanted fairy tale - at times in the story Bride's body changes, reverting to a child. Is this all in her mind? Where does Cinderella come in?

The "Author's Style" section shares with the reader how the author has written about the horrors of child abuse in a poetic style whilst also ending on a positive note.

Captures the message concisely!

Great review of “God Help the Child” by Toni Morrison. It captures the depth of this dramatic novel while maintaining an easy to read format. It was easy to read, and formatted to make skimming even easier. If you’re in need of a quick guide to understanding the book without being bogged down with a long novel, then this is a great review for you.

The character analysis was good, but not thorough enough in my opinion. The relationship analysis was one sided, focusing on how Bride’s relationships with some of the characters. I wish there was more analysis with other characters. But that’s a small thing.

This book is a great resource for students needing help on their book reports and for everyone else who needs a condensed read. It captures the themes of reading while not consuming all your time. A great review of “God Help the Child”

A Love Story.

A love story for followers of FLW. The Peterson Cottage has always been my favorite FLW. To see it lovingly rehabilitated and cared for is both a tribute to the Architect and its original dreamer/owner. It's way up on my bucket list to see. Until then, I have this gem of a book.

Beautiful photos, of the cottage from beginning, to need for serious repair, to full restoration, featuring Wright influenced furnishings. Decent starter book but incomplete for a serious score increase

~~~~~ STRENGTHS ~~~~~
- No tricks, just straightforward strategies to every section (3-4 steps). Easy to remember and simple to use
- Was just the right length for me (covered it in 3 weeks)
- Good number of exercise questions; both 220 GMAT-like (220) and exercises in the chapters; the questions are on the harder side
- Style/Usage guide and list of idioms (you must know all of these)
- Sets the right expectations (GMAT-style reading is very different from casual reading). You must forget what you know and re-learn reading to succeed
- The CR approach to answer the question before reading answer choices works like a charm
- The RC section is what really shines in this book

~~~~~ WEAKNESSES ~~~~~
- I felt the SC section was a little weak (5 pages plus a grammar section in the back). If you are a non-native speaker, you should definitely plan on getting a dedicated grammar book. Kaplan's Verbal Foundations is not bad
- One of the question sets/banks overlaps with the online exercises in the Kaplan Premier book
- The CR questions are slightly different from the official "flavor", which is typical for third-party questions. Keep this in mind and make sure you train your ear on the Official Guide or GMAT Prep before the test

~~~~~ BOTTOM LINE: Though not as detailed as some of the dedicated RC, CR, SC books, it provides a good balance of useful strategies/instruction and time required to cover them. Good number of practice questions and also a grammar/style usage guide at the end. There is a total of 250 verbal questions (no new ones in the 7th edition)
SC: 96
RC: 82
CR: 72

There has been no changes besides some minor typo corrections from the last edition, so if you can get the seventh edition cheaper - get it. 7th and 8th edition books are the same.

~~~~~ SOME TIPS ~~~~~
Here is a list of both tips and mistakes I have seen people make through my years at GMAT Club:
- Whenever you practice, do so in a timed environment (give yourself an average of 2 mins). If you don't, you are really wasting your time and setting unrealistic expectations
- Follow the strategies to the "T". If you are not getting a good score, it is probably because you are not following the strategies exactly and cutting corners. It is very important to read the CR passages twice, and to read the RC completely
- Leverage your strengths and perfect the timing. Strike a balance between the question types. Reading was the hardest for me and I peaked at about 2.5 mins per RC question. (I noticed that if I spent only 2 mins on average, my success rate went down from 90% to about 60-70%) That was not good enough but instead of trying to break through that wall, I worked on answering SC questions in 1 min average and CR's in 1.5 mins average. That gave me enough time to approach RC properly
- Have a problem with keeping attention through the long or intense GMAT passages - try to be passionate about the passage. Imagine that it is the most interesting/revolting/provocative/unbelieavable stories. Care about it!
- Optional suggestion (which I think is very helpful by the way) - read quality fiction books in your spare time. Our minds are not prepared to read the GMAT-level passages (length or intensity or timing wise). You need to train your mind to be open to these and to know how to deal with them. I would recommend getting some quality fiction books - it will help not only with RC but also with SC as your grammar ear will be much more trained. This is how I managed to crack SC's in 1 minute or less.
- If you are a non-native speaker, make sure your English is OK before you start on the verbal section. Knowing strategies is valuable only when you understand what you reading. I know this sounds obvious but so many people ignore this
- On the test, draw a grid and use it to eliminate answer choices. By the time you reach the verbal section, you are 3 hours into the test and your mind will not be able to hold anything. A grid (which you can draw during a break or as you are reading the instructions) will help eliminate/track answer choices on hard questions
- You don't need to take dozens of practice tests. Don't use practice tests to learn material; instead, know it ahead of time and use practice tests to hone your strategies and timing. It should be enough to take 5-10 tests total.

A Foundational Title

I have read this book several times over the years. Each time I find myself a better person. This is certainly one of the foundational books on living the Christian life. The book is easy to read, comforting, challenging, and simplifies an otherwise intimidating aspect of our faith.

About the Author
Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862) was born and lived the greater part of his life in Concord, Massachusetts. He studied at Harvard, where he became a disciple of Emerson, and after graduating in 1837 returned to Concord to teach school with his brother. In Concord, he became acquainted with the members of the Transcendentalist Club and grew especially close to Emerson, for whom he worked as a handyman. Thoreau also began to write for The Dial and other magazines, and in 1839 he made the boat trip that became the subject of his first book, A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers (1849). On July 4, 1845, he moved into the hut he’d constructed on Walden Pond, where he remained until September 6, 1847—a sojourn that inspired his great work Walden, published in 1854. In the 1850s, Thoreau became increasingly active in the abolitionist cause, meeting John Brown at Emerson’s house in 1857 and, after the attack on Harpers Ferry, writing passionately in Brown’s defense. Short trips to Maine and Cape Cod resulted in two post humously published books (The Maine Woods and Cape Cod), and a visit to New York led to a meeting with Walt Whitman. Suffering from tuberculosis, Thoreau traveled to the Great Lakes for the sake of his health, but finding no improvement and realizing that he was going to die, returned home to Concord to put his papers in order and to write his final essays, drawing as always on the Journal, the work that was the source of all his other works and the defining undertaking of his adult life.

Damion Searls is the author of Everything You Say Is True, a travelogue, and What We Were Doing and Where We Were Going, stories. He is also an award-winning translator from German, French, Norwegian, and Dutch, most recently of Rainer Maria Rilke’s The Inner Sky: Poems, Notes, Dreams and Marcel Proust’s On Reading. He has produced an experimental edition of Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick, called ; or The Whale, and his translation of the Dutch writer Nescio’s stories is forthcoming from NYRB Classics.

Consider The Turtle

Proust, after reading excerpts of a French translation of Thoreau's Walden, said that, "It is as though one were reading them inside oneself, so much do they arise from the depths of our intimate experience." Indeed, quibble with editor, Damion Searls', selections for this nearly 700 page one volume edition of the Thoreau's Journal -one-tenth the original size - if you see fit, but he seems to me to have caught the heart of Thoreau. Proust might well admire him; at times, one rather thinks one might be reading a translation of Proust:

"Dreams are real, as is the light of stars and moon, and theirs is said to be a dreamy light. Such early morning thoughts as I speak of occupy a debatable ground between dreams and waking thoughts. They are a sort of permanent dream in my mind. At least, until we have for some time changed our position from prostrate to erect, and commenced or faced some of the duties of the day, we cannot tell what we have dreamed from what we have actually experienced."

The best parts of these "intimate experiences" recorded here are the words of a liminal being, seeing through to some other world by seeing into the world around him so meticulously and yet so profoundly:

"Certain localities only a few rods square in the fields and on the hills, sometimes the other side of a wall, attract me as if they had been the scene of pleasure in another existence."

"As I climbed the Cliff, I paused in the sun and sat on a dry rock, dreaming. I thought of those summery hours when time is tinged with eternity - runs into it and becomes one stuff with it."

The overall effect of the volume is something like drifting down a river in Thoreau's boat (described herein) through mysterious and bewitching purlieus, where mindscape fuses with landscape. One comes away reminded of Thoreau's contemplation of the turtle:

"Be not in haste; mind your private affairs. Consider the turtle. Perchance you have worried yourself, despaired of the world, meditated the end of life, and all things seemed rushing to destruction; but nature has steadily and serenely advanced with a turtle's pace."

This has been my experience of reading these extracts of a man who said that, "I do not know how to distinguish between our waking life and a dream." He - I along with him - was often gripped by the striking eeriness of simply being alive: "I am living this 27th of June, 1840, a dull, cloudy day and no sun shining. The clink of the smith's hammer sounds feebly over the roofs, and the wind is sighing gently, as if dreaming of cheerfuler days."

Sould be called "The Best of Henry David Thoreau"

Choosing to squeeze the best of the lot from Thoreau's 14 volumes of notebooks must have been a massive task, but it gave us readers a massive pleasure in having these morsels put before us, on a "platter" that is over 700 pages long!

As a Thoreau acolyte, having this by my bedside as a nightly dose of calm is my evening treat. It is easily a "dipping" book and once in a while, I hit the same page twice in a week...No Matter! It's all good, thought-provoking Thoreau at his best and easily my best purchase of this year.

Binding is for the long-haul and the paper is magnificent...smooth and ivory-colored.

If you appreciate H.D.T., then by all means add this to your library!

Thoreau's journals, simplified

While I agree you can question the editing until you're blue in the face, this is a fine, affordable way to enjoy Thoreau's journals, plus a LOT easier to use than his hardcover versions, which, by the way are difficult to find. My only wish is that it was also available in Kindle version, as it is a book that lends itself very well to "dipping into" almost at random.. I keep it near my reading chair and, even with only a few minutes, am constantly blown away by Mr. HDT's brilliance, wit, and grasp of both the natural and human state of the world.
