Recommended to those entering - or considering - the field of accounting. A bit too technical for the novice though.

Recommended to those entering - or considering - the field of accounting. It gets a bit too technical for the novice who wants to understand financial statements.

While I usually review CDs and DVDs as well as entertainment related books here on Amazon, in my major occupation, I am a CPA with over 35 years of work in the nonprofit field. I also sit as Treasurer on a Nonprofit so I feel qualified to provide an accurate review of this book.

This is one in the series of "For Dummies" books now published by Wiley. The "Dummies" series goes back to 1991 when Dan Gookin wrote "DOS for Dummies". To date over 1600 (!) "Dummies" titles have been published. The topics range from the sublime to the ridiculous. All the titles share the format in common. Chapters begin with a related cartoon; There are "remember" and "tip" icons and all see to run about 300 pages. In a series this large, some are too simple and some too complicated.

In reading through this volume - a first edition, published in 2011 - I can only think that the target of this book is the high school student who is thinking about entering the field of accounting and pursuing it in college. Years ago I was one of those high school students and a book like this may have been helpful to me in deciding if that was a career I wanted. It also tries to explain - in plain English - the various governing boars and rules such as: Sarbanes-Oxley and ACBOA. The author explains each of this in just two sentences. Later chapters discuss journal entries and financial statements.

The book may be of some interest to owners of businesses who want to understand the financial statements prepared by their accountants as well as investors trying to understand an Annual Report from one of their investments, but - honestly - I think this is not the book for them. The later chapters read more like an Accounting 101 text book.

The author does have good overall credentials. She was worked in industry, government and nonprofits as well as public accounting. The specialized industries such as nonprofits, healthcare, real estate and governmental accounting are only briefly mentioned in the back with only a few sentences devoted to each.

So if you are starting a general or corporate accounting course or preparing to enter college as a business major, you might gain something from this book. Otherwise I can't really recommend it.

MBA's learn it the hard way, not you if you read this book

It is hard to understand business and executive decisions if you do not speak the language of finance accounting. Without an understanding of finance, good people are left in the dark as unfortunately companies keep score via the balance sheet and income statement more than customer satisfaction and personal innovation.

MBAs and other have to wade through financial accounting texts as they have the time and focus to work through the blur of terms and assumptions. Pick up this book and you will not only understand how financial accounting works, but also how it influences business decisions.

The `dummies' genre is always a misnomer as people who seek out these books are not dummies - it takes a smart person to know that they need to learn. I learned the hard way with a four and a half inch book on Financial Accounting. I could have learned more, faster and understood it if this book was around 20 years ago.

Recommended for anyone who wants to understand what accounting is, the language it uses, the rules behind it and finally how it shapes and influences business decisions. Every person needs this basic knowledge to understand what is really going on and why companies do some things that do not seem to make sense.

Strengths

The book is written from the perspective of someone who needs to understand financial accounting rather than someone who needs to create/maintain financial accounts.

The writing is clear, understandable and builds on itself, starting with a few accounting terms and incorporating new ones as the reader builds familiarity with the subject area.

The chapters are short and focused, explaining the concept first and then illustrating it via a financial statement, so you know what you are reading.

The book asks provocative questions and then answers them, rather than being a dry recitation of financial accounting rules and processes. An example is the question "Do service companies have inventory?" something someone would ask but that would not be readily answered in a discussion of inventory accounting practices.

Challenges

Like any large and complex subject there are some things that are simplified or omitted. Breaking things down into small chapters helps make the concepts more readable but they will not make you a financial accounting expert. That is ok, as understanding what financial accounting is will put you ahead of about 95%+ of the people you will meet.

You cannot understand business without understanding the fundamentals of marketing, production, finance and financial accounting. This book is a great accelerator for building that last part of knowledge.

Good book intended for students

I was interested in this book because of a job change. I now have more direct interface with the accounting and finance folks in our organization than I have in the past. I thought that something with a title like "for Dummies" would be a good way to learn a bit of the lingo and some of the concepts.

Well, first of all, I wasn't the intended audience. This book is for students who are looking for extra help while muddling though accounting courses at college. In fact, it continually references, "in your class" or "your professor may..." I found this a bit irritating. I don't have time to go back to college for this stuff.

Now, it does a pretty good job of explaining the different types of financial documents, what they are for and what to look for. The examples are simple- which is good to a point- but don't really relate well to people in my position that are looking at very complex documents and not simple examples. I was also hoping for more "rules of thumb" than are in the book.

Another strong point is the ability to enter the book at any point to reference a particular topic. For example if you want to ready chapter 4 it is not NECESSARY to read chapters 1 to 3. That said, I did read it in order.

The explanations are good, the examples easy to follow. For a student, its is probably a great book. That said, any student who buys a second book (Text book plus one) in order to master a subject is probably the kind of student who is going to succeed anyway.

Judging from the anecdotes he relates, he is an inspired teacher who sparks a love of language in his students. He is an affable, entertaining and unintimidating guide as he reviews his basic rules for good writing: Thou Shalt Honor Thy Reader ("Your first reader is often a teacher... we're desperate to be entertained"); Thou Shalt Not Kill Thy Sentences (a sentence that is "unclear, undisciplined, or incomplete... will be DOA") and more. Some of the subrules are familiar ("Show, don't tell"), but Frank's illustrations-depicting literary devices such as "The Persuasive Staircase"-are so enjoyable, it won't matter. Although aimed at students, grown-up aspiring writers will relish Frank's book, too.

Always he shows and tells that writing is fun, but that it isn't easy ("an individual voice doesn't mean chatter"). Easy-to-Understand & Common Sense Advice on Writing

In addition to books about writing term papers and how to properly study, in THE PEN COMMANDMENTS, Steven Frank has written a guide for the novice prose writer. Other authors and experts have covered this topic, but Frank's book is one of the most accessible I have read. Full of common sense suggestions, easy-to-understand explanations, and a cogently organized process, the book is one to which every new writer should turn.

Drawing on his experience as a high school English teacher, the author walks the aspiring reader through all parts of the writing process. He's structured the book in the form of 10 Commandments (i.e. Thou shalt not Kill Thy Sentences; Thou Shalt Describe Thy World, Express Thy Opinions, and Preserve Thy Past; Thou Shalt Overcome Writer's Block; Thou Shalt Not Covet Thy Writer's Prose). Humorously and in an engaging-sometimes laugh-out-loud-style, the author demystifies the writing process and makes it seem fun. Particularly useful are his suggestions for recommended reading and an appendix of the top ten grammar mistakes to avoid. The book is durably composed with no messy slip cover, and it's the perfect size for any novice to carry in a book-bag or purse.

4.5 stars for the box set of the storm series 1-5. Tessa Aubrey left her corporate life after the death of her beloved aunt and now owns a pizzeria in Nova Scotia. Tessa is existing in the town of Liverpool just running the business and living above the shop until a movie production comes to town. During a storm with the electricity out she grants none other than the beautiful Mr Banks shelter from the elements. Tessa is drawn to this man and regardless of the fact he is only in town for a short while during filming, she acts on her desires.

Timothy Banks is a Hollywood actor that has captured the hearts of women everywhere with his exceptional good looks and his enchanting British Accent. Tim is the kind of guy that takes his mother to awards shows and always has a nice thing to say. He is the small town boy that is down to earth / approachable and has not let any of his fame go to his head. There is always two sides to anyone in the spotlight and Tim is no exception. With Tim's flip side it mostly pertains to his needs in the bedroom. The man is hotter than the sun and is also part of the BDSM community as a Dom. Tim is not the strict protocols and 24/7 lifestyle but he is very alpha with what he expects from his partner sexually. Tessa will be no exception to this rule as he introduces her to what he likes and learns how to please her as well.

Tessa and Tim enter into a D/s relationship and things flourish rather brilliantly and quickly yet Tessa is still holding back pieces of herself and doubting exactly what this is while Tim has to overcome trust issues since he lives such a public life. They both realize that what they have is the real deal but how do you go about an intense, all-consuming relationship that has an expiration date?

So glad I was able to read this as a box set since the way the individual novellas ended would have left me dying until I could have read the next book. Loved the storyline and the characters that are flawed but very real. I will look for more from this author again.

Tessa has isolated herself since her Aunt's death. She has just gotten through each day and on to the next. Her business is good, she has friends and now she has a to weather a storm in her small town with a movie being filmed there. This is good for the whole town with all the media and production people.

Tim is filming his next movie in this small town. When he finds himself wet and cold one evening, one person gives him a warm place to dry his clothes and warm up, until she kicks him out of her apartment, due to a remark his assistant made.

Tessa and Tim get off on the wrong foot and end up spending time with one another but the media is relentless while following Tim. Tim is used to the media in his world, it's part of it, but when the media jump onto Tessa, he feels guilty that he has brought this into her world.

Both have pasts that bring them sadness and grief. Tessa finds herself dealing with the death and mourning of her aunts death, along with the media blitz with her Tim's relationship, but through it, she realizes, she is not alone, Tim is there being strong for them both.

The characters flow with one another, their past hurts, the time spent together is all real, no splendor of Hollywood, just being real with each other. Tim gives Tessa time and space to find her place again and Tessa can only hope Tim still wants a life with her.

Tim Banks is almost perfect!! Hot Dom!!

Timothy Banks, hot Hollywood actor. Tessa, former career-obsessed business consultant, now pizza and coffee shop owner. She’s running from her past, and has settled in a new town running her own business, and made a few new friends. One stormy night, a handsome actor knocks on her door, and her life changes immediately.

Tim is in town filming a movie, and happens upon Tessa’s pizza/coffee shop. Their attraction is immediate, and between movie takes, Tim attempts to woo Tessa. Tim is a Dominant, and although it surprises Tessa, she’s intrigued by Tim’s seemingly two sides—well-mannered, easy to talk to, funny and smart; in Dom mode, he’s brings out Tessa’s darker desires.

To me, Tim was the perfect combination of hard Dom, and sweet, kind, considerate big beautiful hunk of a man. Tessa was the girl who wasn’t impressed with the trappings of a famous guy that all the women would love to have. She had her own mind, and isn’t afraid to express it. She’s just what Tim wants and needs.

I loved the box set. It was a nice, hot and fun read. The story flowed great, and it seemed longer than it was. It didn’t feel like a group of short stories, but a nice novel.

I received this ARC for an honest review, and I give it 5 stars.

This first novel adds another important chapter to the existing body of literature about the Mexican-American experience. Viramontes (The Moths and Other Stories), who teaches at Cornell, does not offer deep characterization or psychological complexity here. Instead, working firmly in the social-realist vein of Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath and Upton Sinclair's The Jungle, she paints a harrowing ensemble portrait of migrant laborers in California's fruit fields. The family of 13-year-old Estrella, and the others with whom they travel and work, burn under 109-degree heat until the backs of their necks sting; women nurse their babies in the backs of pickups. Viramontes depicts this world with a sensuous physicality, as when Petra, Estrella's mother, digs a fingernail into the melting tar of a blacktop highway. And the close quarters in which her characters are forced to live promotes a collective intimacy that Viramontes evokes with a sure hand, conveying the solace to be found in solidarity while never losing sight of the fact that these people enjoy absolutely no privacy. Slow and wandering at the outset, the novel picks up after a small plane releases a white shower of deadly pesticide, which washes over the face of Alejo, a teenager who is perched in a peach tree, busy stealing the soft, ripe fruit. Alejo is drenched with poison, much to the horror of Estrella, who has fallen in love with him. Alejo becomes sick with what the migrants call "da?o of the fields"?so sick that the de facto leader of the workers wants to leave him behind. But Estrella makes it her mission to help save him, and she is driven to great sacrifice in order to do so. Into this unforgiving world, Viramontes pours archetypal themes of the passage of time, young love, the bonds and tensions between generations and, above all, the straining of the spirit to transcend miserable material conditions.

Migrant Mexicans shackled to a life of itinerant farm labor form the backdrop for a summer in the life of young Estrella and her family. Seemingly a prescription for sorrow, in Viramontes' hands the canvas instead teems with color and builds toward hope for a liberating future--at least for Estrella. Her mother, Petra, and stepfather, Perfecto, remain confined to their tattered possessions and dusty poverty, and much of Viramontes' imagery--imaginative and allusive descriptions of land, orchards, and worn-out clothes--fix in readers' minds that they will not escape. Estrella, too, partakes of this despair of the migrant's world, but being young she is not resign to her seeming fate. Her feelings culminate when she smashes up a nurse's office, goaded by the nurse's insensitivity to the family's privation and shortage of cash. That shock quickly abates, but the anger elides into an ethereal mood as Perfecto weighs abandoning the family while Estrella wanders through a barn to scatter then reattract a flock of symbolic birds. About the Author
A 30-year teaching veteran, Judy Davis has spent the past ten years teaching fifth and sixth grade at The Manhattan New School. She conducts workshops and summer institutes throughout the United States and Canada for elementary and middle school teachers on all aspects of literacy instruction. Her classroom is a model site for staff development for teachers in New York City's School District #2 and other areas.

Sharon Hill has been an educator for many years. For the past four, she has served as a teacher, literacy staff developer, and administrator at The Manhattan New School. She has been a presenter at workshops, summer institutes, and conferences across the United States and Sweden for teachers K-8. Sharon is now taking requests for summer 2006.

This is a well written book, but more importantly, it is the generous sharing of wisdom born of a vast and diverse experience of life, human psyche, teaching, learning and self-improvement. There is a good deal of information in this book, garnered pearls of wisdom from a variety of sources, put together in a simple, easy to understand and implement presentation. The fact that this information is personalized by the author's life experiences lends it the credibility of experiential knowledge acquired through the only way the human brain really learns, trial, error and improvement (evolution).

Good introduction, heavy on the pretty pictures

This little book is packed full of astute information on the construction of the medieval cathedrals. The primary focus lies on the actual construction and the lives of the people who built them, all written by an elite scholar on the topic. The book is brilliantly illustrated with pictures from manuscripts and modern photographs of cathedrals, all of them relevant. As an introductory work, this book is exceptionally. It is bright, brilliant and written by someone knowledgeable in the field. It is very easy to read.

What detracts from this book is that it is too short, covers too many topics and just too little is present. At only 175 pages, many loaded in pictures and including the index, there just isn't a whole lot of content to be had. At times, it feels like it was designed as a tourists handbook, rather than an introductory work in the field. The addition of primary texts at the back is a nice touch, but this book had so much potential.

Great, brief read, but unfortunately it won't last through the afternoon. The pictures are nice, and the prices are generally decent. If you want a pretty introduction, read this. It may lack depth, but it is easy, accessible and cheap.
