The Mammoth Book of Awesome Comic Fantasy (Mammoth Books)From Brand: Carroll n Graf

With the hilarious "Happy Valley," a story originally written by John Cleese and Connie Booth for Monty Python's Flying Circus, this third volume in an extraordinarily popular Mammoth Book series gets off to a suitably silly start. It continues merrily apace with "Attack of the Charlie Chaplins" by Garry Kilworth, visits "The Strawhouse Pavilion" by Ron Goulart, and takes in "A Bad Day on Mount Olympus" with Marilyn Todd. Along the way it introduces Esther Eisner's "Gunsel and Gretel" and Cherith Baldry's "Broadway Barbarian" and renews acquaintance with F. Anstey's "Ferdie." It bemuses as well as amuses with "A Case of Four Fingers" concocted by John Grant, not to mention "The Absolute and Utter Impossibility of the Facts in the Case of the Vanishing of Henning Vok" from Jack Adrian. And before this wildly comic romp ends, it discovers "Math Takes a Holiday" (Paul Di Filippo) and "Mother Duck Strikes Again" (Craig Shaw Gardner). Fantasy finds broad definition in this wackily comic tour. While some of the stories approach the domain of science fiction, others are lodged in an everyday reality. None of them, though, fails to entertain. Together, the more than thirty selections -- thirteen of them brand-new and the balance of them often rare finds or forgotten gems -- provide a fresh sampling of comic genius in the sphere of fantasy fiction and a wide range of tales to suit every taste in humor.

From Publishers Weekly
As prolific editor Ashley shows in this third comic fantasy anthology, a mix of reprints and original tales, humor comes in many varieties, but it's the most fragile of literary forms, often not traveling or aging well. Such a story as Stan Nicholls's "Polly Put the Mockers On" remains untranslatably British. Wizards, nearly all British, pop up drearily in far too many of the entries. In her heavy-handed, wizard-laden pastiche of Damon Runyon, "Broadway Barbarian," Cherith Baldry manages to convert gold to lead. More successful on the whole are the reprints, notably Porter Emerson Browne's "The Diplodocus" (1908), about a Luther Burbank type who combines animal instead of plant species with hilarious results, and Nelson Bond's "Nothing in the Rules" (1943), an ingratiating romp about horse racing and a rakish, scholarly centaur. Sheer silliness pays off in the opening tale, John Cleese and Connie Booth's "Happy Valley," later adapted for an episode of Monty Python's Flying Circus. More serious silliness underlies Avram Davidson's delightful Ruritanian pastiche, "Milord Sir Smiht, the English Wizard." In the shaggy dog category, with their punning twists, are James Bibby's "Pale Assassin" and Jack Sharkey's "The Blackbird." And Scott Edelman's all-dialogue "You'll Never Walk Alone" is the ultimate "magnetic personality" story. While only a dozen or so of the volume's 32 tales rank as truly "awesome," the laughs come often enough. Try it, you'll like it.

Wonder? Breed? How Foul is your Seed??
By Coroner
What to expect from "The Mammoth Book of Awesome Comic Fantasy"--a mosaic of waggish rogues and wayward wizards, misinformed planet-skippers, and would-be assassins in the grain...and from the skies. I recommend reading the book starting with the hyperactive final tale, "You'll Never Walk Alone Again"; its frenetic rhythm demands your perception be sharply angled! "Put Down that Universe!" is the second-to-last tale and features characters equally extraordinary and intriguing. Other meritorious additions: "Dragonet", "Nothing in the Rules", "How Much Would You Pay?","Math Takes a Holiday", "Polly Put the Mockers On", and "The Absolute and Utter Impossibility of the Facts in the Case of the Vanishing of Henning Vok"...On the flip side, skip "Ferdie", "Milord Sir Smiht...", "Touched By a Salesman", "The Swords and the Stones", "Fair Weather Fiend" and "Mother Duck Strikes Again". TEDIOUS!! Overall, great book...

Not sure what's up with the one star review
By stark
The stories are witty, clever and well-written. Can't imagine how someone could give this one star. It fits very well into the canon of tongue-in-check, humorous amusing fantasy. Kind of in the same vein as the disc world books or hitchhikers guide. That is, this isn't LOTR - it's comic fantasy. And a fantastic collection of it. Now maybe one doesn't like comic fantasy - one is certainly entitled to that - but the titles is hardly misleading. I just pick it up and read a story now and then - maybe 10-20 pages - and I'm always wanting to share it with someone during and/or after.

I am disappointed in this
By Amazon Customer
I am disappointed in this. I have been a fan of the Comic Fantasy anthologies. Loved the previous editions but this one sucked. I'm sorry to be so blunt about it but, really, it did. Most of the stories seemed to be of the gumshoe variety and not very humorous at that. Oh, there are a few that were noteworthy (as in all anthologies) but, on the whole, the stories weren't very interesting. Now, I did notice that a lot of the authors were deceased so maybe these stories were written years ago...? I guess I'm trying to figure out where the awesomeness comes in....

The author interviewed about 25 different parents who lost one or more children of various ages and differing circumstances. Very honest and open. Very different ways of dealing with this terrible grief. But you may already know there are so many different ways that we must deal with this.

Compelling Stories from Compelling People
By Elizabeth
The death of a loved one is a harsh blow. Whether it comes suddenly, in an accident or natural disaster, or after a long battle with illness, the survivors are left with an emptiness that defies description. And when the loved one is a child--no matter how old--that emptiness, says author Sandy Fox, never goes away.
Ms. Fox's 27-year-old daughter Marcy was killed in an automobile accident just when life had begun to fully open before her. The driver that caused her death has never been found.
"When your child dies, you change," Ms. Fox writes in Chapter 5: "Private Thoughts on Healing." "The person you were before is gone. The life you had before is no longer possible."
"The heartache that comes when the natural order of things is changed, when your child dies before you," adds her ex-husband Jess, Marcy's father, "is unfathomable."
In I HAVE NO INTENTION OF SAYING GOOD-BYE Ms. Fox has compiled the stories of 24 other families devastated by the loss of one or more children, revealing the similarity of the pain they suffer and the many and varied ways they dealt with it. It is an enlightening study of grief and redemption, of anger and epiphany.
This is not the first book to address the issues of mourning or the death of children. What catches the reader's attention, though, is the simplicity and honest with which Ms. Fox and those she interviewed reveal their deepest and, sometimes, darkest pain. The result is an enlightening and emotional journey that leaves one both aching for these people and applauding their strength and courage.
Whether you've lost a child yourself or know someone who has, Ms. Fox offers insights into the many ways people deal--or don't--with that loss. For those fortunate enough not to have suffered this particular pain, her book will provide education in how to respond when someone else has that comes from the one source that can't be refuted. I HAVE NO INTENTION OF SAYING GOOD-BYE should be on the reference shelves of any professional who confronts the grief-stricken.

You Are Not Alone
By Bernard Faller
Nothing in life prepares one for losing a child. But for those of us who have lost a child, there is much to learn from the shattered worlds of the parents who have come before us. I Have No Intention of Saying Good-bye, by Sandy Fox, opens a window into the post-death lives of twenty-four parents who have lost a child or multiple children. Parents whose children have died often feel very alone. If you are such a parent, this book will help you see how much you have in common with other parents, and will give you a glimpse into how you might develop a meaningful future out of today's darkness.

The Systems View of Life: A Unifying Vision, by Fritjof Capra, Pier Luigi Luisi

Over the past thirty years, a new systemic conception of life has emerged at the forefront of science. New emphasis has been given to complexity, networks, and patterns of organisation leading to a novel kind of 'systemic' thinking. This volume integrates the ideas, models, and theories underlying the systems view of life into a single coherent framework. Taking a broad sweep through history and across scientific disciplines, the authors examine the appearance of key concepts such as autopoiesis, dissipative structures, social networks, and a systemic understanding of evolution. The implications of the systems view of life for health care, management, and our global ecological and economic crises are also discussed. Written primarily for undergraduates, it is also essential reading for graduate students and researchers interested in understanding the new systemic conception of life and its implications for a broad range of professions - from economics and politics to medicine, psychology and law.

Review
"A magisterial study of the scientific basis for an integrated worldview grounded in the wholeness that generations of one-eyed reductionists could not see. The authors succeed brilliantly!"
David W. Orr, Oberlin College

"The Systems View of Life: A Unifying Vision gives us a sound synthesis of the best science and theory on the connectedness of all living things, the dynamics of emergence and self-organization as conceived by Francisco Varela. This volume offers a profound framework for understanding our place on the planet, for better or worse. And if we apply the insights offered by Capra and Luisi, it will be for the better. The Systems View of Life should be required reading for today's young, tomorrow's leaders, and anyone who cares about life on this planet."
Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence and Ecological Intelligence

"What is life? What is a human being? How can new discoveries about nature and ourselves keep us from becoming the first self-endangered species? Capra and Luisi's dazzling synthesis explains how moving beyond mechanistic, linear, reductionist habits is revealing startling new answers to perennial questions of philosophy and practice. Sir Francis Bacon's goal of "the enlargement of the bounds of Human Empire, to the effecting of all things possible" has put humanity in serious trouble. But today, rebuilding our thinking, language, and actions around Darwin, not Descartes, and around modern biology, not outmoded physics, creates rich new options. Driven by the coevolution of business with civil society, these can build a fairer, healthier, cooler, safer world. The Systems View of Life is a lucid, wide-ranging guide to living maturely, kindly, and durably with each other and with other beings on the only home we have."
Amory B. Lovins, Rocky Mountain Institute

The Systems View of Life -- A Review for Professors and for Undergraduate and Graduate Students in the Human Sciences
By Brian Castellani, Complexity Scientist and Professor, Kent State University
As of 2014, there has been much written in the complexity sciences on the all-purpose topics of complex systems and networks and their related scientific methods - I am thinking here, for example, of Byrne and Callaghan's excellent "Complexity Theory and the Social Sciences" or Mitchell's "Complexity: A Guided Tour."

What really hasn't been written, however, is a cohesive or comprehensive review of the content (the actual empirical outcome) of this cutting-edge research - which, in almost every way imaginable, is creating an entirely new view of human life and the global ecosystem that sustains it.

Enter Capra and Luisi's new textbook "The Systems View of Life."

For those new to the complexity science literature (or professors thinking about adopting this book for class), one couldn't ask for a better writing partnership. Capra, a physicist by training, is world-renown for this twin books on systems and complexity science ("The Web of Life" and "The Hidden Connections"), as well as his provocative assessment - from a philosophy of science perspective - of the limits of conventional, mechanistic science and the need for a new, holistic, ecologically responsible systems science ("The Tao of Physics," "The Turning Point" and "The Science of Leonardo"). In turn, Luisi is an internationally recognized professor of biochemistry and complexity science, having done primary research into such core issues as cellular autopoiesis and synthetic biology. He is also well known for his in-depth academic books, as well as his two popular works, "The Emergence of Life" and "Mind and Life."

Divided into three parts, "The Systems View of Life" is a compendium of all-things systems thinking and complexity science:

Part 1 (sections 1 and 2) is devoted to the philosophy of science, focusing on the historical shift from mechanistic thinking (dominated by reductionism, Newtonian mechanics, social physics and a Cartesian view of life) to systems thinking (dominated by the holism, networks, nonlinear mechanics, global network society, and a complex systems view of life). Capra and Luisi are clear: mechanistic thinking is a victim of its own success, as it was so powerful in solving so many issues over the last hundred or so years that (now) it is simply assumed, almost by definition, that it can solve all current problems, which is wrong, as the problems of today, as Warren Weaver pointed out all the way back in 1948 (Science and Complexity), are complex systems problems.

For professors thinking about this textbook, Part1 is an important addition to the literature - here I am thinking of Hammond's "The Science of Synthesis" and Klir's "Facets of Systems Science" - as Capra and Luisi's chapters provide the historical backdrop missing from most introductions to the complexity sciences, helping students, as I already alluded to, understand why the sciences are shifting.

In Part 2 (the third section of the book), Capra and Luisi venture into entirely new territory, doing something (as I have already suggested in my opening remarks) yet to be done in the literature, let alone a textbook: they synthesize the empirical insights of the systems and complexity sciences into a new and cohesive view of life. As they state in their introduction, "We present a unified systemic vision that includes and integrates life's biological, cognitive, social, and ecological dimensions."

The accomplishment of this task cannot be underestimated, as it is significant and should have a lasting impact, demonstrating just how visionary the complexity sciences can be - but only if time is given to their study (I am also thinking of students here) and to collecting and connecting up their insights.

Such a synthesis requires, however, a bit more effort than just connecting the dots - even though Capra and Luisi humbly suggest that this is all they are doing. Instead, it requires a theoretical frame, which the individual empirical insights often lack.

For Capra and Luisi, the theoretical frame is a network-based view of life. Networks provide, literally, the links from one topic to the next in their book, in a sort of "scale-free approach to knowledge," where one moves freely from the human genome and human cognition to social organizations and cities to ecosystems and global society.

But, this is not where things end. For Capra and Luisi, these links must extend beyond theory and empirical synthesis to application and policy - to helping the world become a better place, to the moral culpability of science and to doing the right thing!

While not by any means unanimously embraced, there is a global morality associated with a significant segment of the systems and complexity science community, which goes by a variety of names, from deep ecology and ecofeminism to post-humanism and global civil society. Regardless of the term, the view is the same: we face, currently, as a global society, a significant number of complex systems problems, which can be better managed (or even solved) if the political, economic, scientific and public will to employ such a perspective exists! If not, these problems will most likely be our doom - or, less dramatically, they will result in increased global disparity and inequality and, ecologically speaking, a significantly degraded and decompensated planet.

And so, in the final section of the book - Part 3 - Capra and Luisi employ the complex systems view of life to make sense of and, in turn, address the current list of global social problems we, as a global society, face: from population growth and climate change to economic sustainability and the development of a global civil society.

Again, for a science textbook, this is new territory. Professors typically do not challenge students to think about the links between their science and the global world in which they live. But that is, nonetheless, where our immediate future resides: we need our students, as the generation that will inherit all of these problems, to have the tools necessary to address them, and in a way that leads to a sustainable level of economic, political, cultural, and spiritual/existential wellbeing for the greatest number of people possible! What more, in 500 pages or less, could a professor (or our students) want from a book devoted to making sense of the complex lives we currently live? And so, whether you are teaching introduction to sociology or macroeconomics, cognitive psychology or cultural anthropology, microbiology or philosophy, it doesn't matter; make this textbook part of your required reading list. Our future depends upon it.

Great systems overview, depends on your purpose, with some glitches
By Murray May
I read Capra's The Turning Point when it was originally published in the early 80s and thought it was a great book. The Systems View of Life is akin conceptually to this earlier book, but also adds various themes that were introduced in Capra's later book The Web of Life. In rating The Systems View book I would give it five stars as a textbook but four stars if one is looking for a readable book on paradigm shifts applying on multiple fronts and to the whole (as with The Turning Point). The Systems View is drier, as one might expect for a textbook. However, its sweep is wonderfully broad. In addition, it suffers in parts I think from a lack of deeper knowledge of the issues. There is uncritical acceptance of the Lester Brown optimistic line on wind farms (p. 417), when there is in fact considerable angst surrounding wind farms, including with landscape destruction, low frequency noise and associated health problems, and continuing community conflict. Likewise, when smart meters are mentioned as part of smart grids (p. 427), no mention is made of the considerable health concerns and community opposition to smart meters (on EMF and cost grounds). Prof. David Carpenter at the State University of New York is a public health physician who is expert in this field, and more on the topic can be obtained by searching the web for material on this. Overall though, the book's purpose in moving from a mechanistic to a holistic and ecological worldview is very well done.

An outstanding work. A true magnum opus
By Prof Warwick Fox
Fritjof Capra has been a consistently interesting and deservedly popular thinker for many years now. I have always been impressed by the clarity and economy with which he has been able to communicate complex ideas, often in considerable depth, to a general audience. Equally, I have always been impressed by the breadth of his intellectual interests and his rare ability to combine these wide-ranging interests into coherent and far-reaching syntheses.

Now, together with his co-author Pier Luigi Luisi, who has himself made significant contributions to the discussion of the emergence of life (see, e.g., Luisi's The Emergence of Life: From Chemical Origins to Synthetic Biology), Capra and Luisi have outdone themselves. Their 500 page book The Systems View of Life: A Unifying Vision (with many words per page, given its large-page format) is, purely and simply, a magnum opus, it really is. It surely represents the culminating statement of Capra and his co-author's work over several decades now on the development of a scientifically-informed unified vision of the world that incorporates and integrates the biological, ecological, cognitive, philosophical, social, political, and even the spiritual dimensions of life. The last time I read such an all-embracing, well-informed, and richly rewarding synthesis as this was when I read Charles Birch and John Cobb's The Liberation of Life: From the Cell to the Community (also from Cambridge University Press) - and that was published back in 1981!

If you want to understand the major cultural shift that we have been undergoing over the last several hundred years (right across the physical, life, and social sciences) from a mechanistic worldview to the emergence of what the authors term a 'systems' worldview - a worldview that sees the world around us in terms of networks, patterns, and complex, mutually interacting, living or life-like systems rather than in terms of discrete building blocks that interact in linear, sequential ways that are open to precise forms of prediction and control - then this is now THE book to read.

As the authors show, this shift in worldview has major implications for almost everything that ought to matter to us - from the very practical ways in which we need to attend to the manifold problems that are pressing in upon us in the ecological and socio-political realms to the ways in which we can find an approach to our inner, spiritual lives that is consistent with our best scientific understandings.

You get the idea. I cannot praise this book enough. Capra and Luisi have done us all a great service. I cannot see how anyone could spend even just a few hours with this book and not come away considerably the richer for it. Spend considerably longer with it and you will undoubtedly come away knowing a lot more about various areas of interest to you than you do now - not to mention more inspired to work for changes in directions that will enable us to sustain the web of life on this planet. Every critically-minded reader will find their own quibbles here and there of course, but c'mon ... the comprehensive breadth and depth of scholarship displayed in this book, all communicated clearly and economically (often with aid of pictures, inset boxes, and diagrams), is simply outstanding.

Warwick Fox - author of Toward a Transpersonal Ecology: Developing New Foundations for Environmentalism, A Theory of General Ethics: Human Relationships, Nature, and the Built Environment, and On Beautiful Days Such as This: A philosopher sings the blues and restores his soul in Greece.

The author, an experienced brew master, provides a brief history of beer, an examination of assorted ingredients and equipment and concise instructions on how to make beer. The bulk of the book contains recipes for a wide variety of ales, lagers, wheat beers and mixed styles.

This is certainly an attractive book. However for practical use, it would be challenging for novices. Neither the organization nor the spare instructions are especially user friendly. Those who have mastered the process may be inspired by the recipes. But I think beginners would find How to Brew: Everything You Need To Know To Brew Beer Right The First Time or Home Brewing with BeerSmith: How to Brew and Design Great Beer at Home or The Complete Joy of Homebrewing Third Edition easier to follow and more generous in instruction and explanation. I would have liked to see a more detailed resource section and a beer and food pairing chart. Still this is an impressive book both in terms of appearance and content and is sure to delight any craft beer fan. Recommended

An excellent guide to home brewing for beginners
By Scott Schiefelbein
Any review of a guide to home brewing must be a very personal affair. Ultimately, regardless of whatever the merits of a particular guide book may be, the key question is whether the reader will actually use the darn thing, and that may depend on some otherwise superficial aspects of the book.

There is an awful lot in Greg Hughes' "Home Brew Beer" to recommend it to the prospective home brewer. First, consider the physical traits of the book (something I'd rarely do in anything other than a how-to book). It's a big hardback book that actually lies flat when you lay it on a tabletop, counter, or bookstand . . . so you can have it open to refer to during the brewing process without having to find a paperweight to keep the darn thing from flipping closed.

The big pages also allow for text in good-sized font so you can read it from a few feet away (see the preceding paragraph) and there are lots of practical full-color photographs so you can see what the author is talking about - whether it's a picture of pouring malt extract into a pot of water, how to use a hydrometer, or how a pressure barrel differs from a keg. There are also a number of helpful diagrams. While there are a couple of glossy photos of perfectly-poured beers, this is a functional book rather than a coffee-table book about beer.

The book uses glossy pages to allow for the full-color effect, but the pages leave plenty of room for your own hand-written notes, so once you are comfortable with marking up the nice paper, you'll be fine. By contrast, Charlie Papazian's "The Complete Joy of Home Brewing (3rd edition)" uses a lower-grade paper quality perfectly designed for marginal notes, but does not allow for color photos and crams more words onto smaller pages, so you're going to need to be more judicious with your notes in Papazian's book.

That's a lot of describing the physical book itself, but how about what is actually in Hughes' book? There's an awful lot of meat on the bone in terms of brewing knowledge here. After a thorough section on "Ingredients," Hughes has an extensive section on "Getting Started" that goes from "Before You Begin" to how to label your bottles. The next 140-odd pages walk through different brewing recipes and styles, with generally one page being dedicated to each beer. Recipes range from the (Brown Porter, American Pilsner, English IPA) to the obscure (Nettle Beer, Vanilla Bourbon Stout, Smoked Beer) that should keep the home brewer experimenting for years. The brewing recommendations for each recipe are presented in bullet-point format, again with plenty of room for marginal notes. This is in marked contrast to Papazian's book, which offers more of a narrative for brewing recipes.

All in all, "Home Brew Beer" is highly recommended for any home brewer, but is probably better suited for beginners.

Great money-saving resource for those interested in tackling home-brewing or expanding their beginner home-brewing experience
By Lucky Clucker
This is a great resource-- especially for recipes. I think most of the instructional portion of this book is available online. However, the author does a great deal for simplifying the procedure by using lots and lots of good photos to accompany his instructions.

I have brewed before and it turns out that I inadvertently followed the author's instructions for learning brewing and have used a kit, used malt extract, and have just recently bought what I need to tackle full-mash brewing. I am VERY glad to have his instructions for this process, which requires more equipment than I had expected and already has saved me from plunging into a project without the right tools (need a tun and sparge arm), which I seem to love to do. I've made several very good batches of bitter in the past and plan another for my experiment in full-mash.

The book is loaded with recipes, even some for lambics, which has always been a dream of mine. I have access to a very good brew shop-- DeFalco's, in Houston, so I've always be able to just pick up the phone and bug them with my questions. Thanks to Mr. Hughs' thorough instructions for full-mash brewing I'm feeling a bit more confident and hoping I won't need to pester my home-brew connections with incessant questions for this batch.

If you are interested in starting home-brewing, I think this book is a very, very, very good investment. I wish I had had a copy of it to start with. I'm a cheapskate, but this would be worth the money to both new brewers and intermediate brewers alike.

Popkiss: The Life and Afterlife of Sarah Records, by Michael White

From 1987 to 1995, Bristol, England's Sarah Records was a modest underground success and, for the most part, a critical laughingstock in its native country-sneeringly dismissed as the sad, final repository for a fringe style of music (variously referred to as “indie-pop,” “C86,” “cutie” and “twee”) whose moment had passed. Yet now, more than 20 years after its founders symbolically “destroyed” it, Sarah is among the most passionately fetishized record labels of all time. Its rare releases command hundreds of dollars, devotees around the world hungrily seek out any information they can find about its poorly documented history, and young musicians-some of them not yet born when Sarah shut down-claim its bands (such as Blueboy, the Field Mice, Heavenly, and the Wake) as major influences.

Featuring dozens of exclusive interviews with the music-makers, producers, writers and assorted eyewitnesses who played a part in Sarah's eight-year odyssey, Popkiss: The Life and Afterlife of Sarah Records is the first authorised biography of an unlikely cult legend.

Review

“It's hard to think of another record company that provoked such strong emotions as Sarah: the label, and the music it released, inspired either undying devotion or implacable loathing. Michael White's book shines a brilliant light on a strange and unique moment in indie history, illuminating a fascinating, lost world of pop, politics, passion and postal orders.” ―Alexis Petridis, Head Rock and Pop Critic, The Guardian, UK

“Combining a zine-like zeal for its subjects with a thorough examination of the cultural context that made them special, the interconnected narratives of Popkiss form an IRL internet for people who believe a record is something to hold, cherish and scratch rather than click into the cloud. This is an essential archive of a pivotal moment in UK pop history that was in danger of fading from our collective pre-web memory.” ―Stuart Berman, Pitchfork Contributor and author of This Book Is Broken: A Broken Social Scene Story and Too Much Trouble: A Very Oral History of Danko Jones

“More than the labels that inspired its existence, Sarah Records came to define the indie-pop aesthetic. A great record label needs a great biography, and it's hard to think of anyone who could tell the Sarah story as empathetically as Michael White. Popkiss is a triumph.” ―Pete Paphides

“[A] detailed history of the cult Bristol-based indie ... [White] puts forward a strong case for its worth. A fascinating and singular story.” –Mike Barnes, MOJO

“White's history is a much-needed document, fleshing out details and explanation for a label and ‘scene’ that has meant so much to so many yet not received the literary attention it deserves … Popkiss is immensely readable and incredibly successful in uncovering the secrets of a record label that was timeless in its output, limited in its lifespan, and for the most part known to only a select few record-philes during its duration. If you were in the know, Popkiss will help you discover Sarah anew. If you weren't, you will find endless rabbit holes down which to venture. Either way, you'll come away pleased.” –Frank Valish, Under the Radar

Call me a twaddling fanboy if you like, but Popkiss is a hugely enjoyable evocation of a lost age of independent music--one that meant a lot to me then and continues to fascinate now. White writes with considerable wit and verve, and I didn't detect any "journalistic errors," though nor was I searching for any. At times I wish he could go into more detail--this book flies by, and there are some avenues not fully explored. But I've been entranced by this peek behind the curtain of a scene that partly defined my youth. Sarah always brought out the haters: plus ca change, it seems.

A great historical overview of a wonderful label
By too_old_to_be_so_indie
I was a big fan of Sarah Records in the early 90's, and this book is a wonderful history of the label and the bands and the people involved. It's a great introduction for people unfamiliar with Sarah, and a great trip down memory lane for existing fans.

and made me a better music fan
By Adam Trujillo
I went into Popkiss a minor Sarah fan (mostly because of Blueboy and The Hit Parade). I left Popkiss not only with a renewed and expanded interest in Sarah, but with warm fuzzy feelings about indie pop at large and my relationship to it as a fan.

The closest comparison I can make is to Simon Reynold's postpunk survey Rip It Up and Start Again. The structures and writing styles of both books are similar, certainly. More importantly, though: both books challenged my perceptions about their subject matters, got me thinking about how I engage with music, and made me a better music fan. Definitely a worthwhile read for anyone interested in 80s/90s indie.

Unassisted Childbirth, by Laura Kaplan Shanley

Laura and her husband delivered their first child without the aid of a doctor or midwife. Laura alone delivered the next three children, assisted by her belief that giving birth was a natural process for which a woman's body had been well designed. Therefore, she saw no need to involve the medical establishment. Her personal birth experiences confirmed her belief, and subsequent research has convinced her that with the proper mindset delivering one's own baby is the safest, most fulfilling way to give birth. Tribal women and animals can help show the way, if one is humble enough to learn from them. Shanley gives numerous references, both historical and contemporary, to support her theory. She tells of her own experiences in childbirth as well as those of other women who have given birth without medical assistance. Although many contemporary writers deal with the concept that we create our own reality according to our beliefs, no one has applied this notion to birthing experience to the extent that Laura has.

For many generations, society has assumed that childbirth, with its associated fear, pain, and risks, must take place in a hospital setting in the presence of medical professionals who have no relationship to the parents and their baby. Laura Kaplan Shanley rebuffs the context of this assumption, which treats childbirth as a disease rather than as a natural process. In Unassisted Childbirth, she calls upon the thousands of years during which women gave birth without medical intervention--arguing that with the proper beliefs, women are capable of and can opt for delivering their own babies, with or without their partners. Shanley, who had her own four children at home without medical assistance, explains how women's apprehensions contribute to most difficulties encountered in labor. In addition, she points out, only after the practice of placing women in infectious hospital settings began did the risk of hemorrhaging, sickening or even dying in childbirth increase.

This book was not what I expected.
By Cnorr
I rarely give a book less than three stars, but this was pretty opinionated. She gives a lot of information about birth trends in the 80's and 90's, but then goes on to belittle the experts she uses to backup her theory. I find this was more about her beliefs and experience than freebirth. She also refers to biblical principals, and then calls them myths. She gives me this angry, hippie vibe. You feel more like she's yelling at you and drawing on your emotions by telling you intense stories about extreme cases of woman being mistreated in pregnancy. In short, I wish this had been more about UC and less about her belief system (while putting down other's beliefs). I recommend Unhindered birth for someone who is considering a freebirth instead.

Absolutely amazing!!
By Avonne Lozano
Absolutely amazing!!!! Bravo for Laura Kaplan. She enlighten us with the power we females have and unfortunately at some point was taken away.. The idea that women are capable of conceive, bare and deliver a baby without any outside help made complete sense when we think that women where made perfect. Delivering a child is just another bodily function that happens on it's own when the mother is emotionally, spiritually and mentally prepared and open to listen and allow her body to do the job she instinctively knows how to get it done. Wonderful and complete information to prepare any woman who is open minded and ready to take a leap of faith on ultimate freedom!

Must have
By Claire
I'm a mother of three (born at home), now expecting twins. I'm also a bookworm and have read numerous books about childbirth. This one is a must have. Intelligent, illuminating and inspiring. Whether or not you are planning an unassisted birth, whether or not you have a scientific background such as mine, this book is the first one to read. It will help you to become a better mother/father.
BRAVO to Laura!
