I am an Alcoholic.

After three days of binging, I was having a depressing withdrawal. I've been down that road many a times. So I decided to read about alcohol and how to stop it. This the first book I've about alcohol. When I read about the many signs and symptoms of an alcoholic, I had an epiphany. I am a real alcoholic and I better change my ways or get ready for a life wasted. If you have tried to quit many times but went straight back to that cold one, read this book or any other one. But get information on the behaviors of an alcoholic. The first step is knowing and then admitting. Best of luck to anyone who wants to beat alcohol. You can.

Very helpful information, highly recommend

I have several people that suffer from alcohol abuse in my life. I got this book so I could learn more about alcoholism and abuse and it has helped me understand the symptoms and how to help. I also have had incidents in my life where I binged myself and it really made me understand the underlying causes and what to do from here on out if I ever fall into that habit again. I loved the statistics and facts that put all the information into perspective and would say this book is very helpful and easy to understand. I would recommend it to anyone suffering from addiction or their friends​ and family members.

Beautiful. My new favorite SW book

Let me begin this review by saying that I could not put this book down. Not because there was a galaxy-shaping event taking place, or a superweapon about to destroy a planet, but because i was so invested in the characters. Kenobi is easily the most human Star Wars book I have ever read, filled with characters that capture your affection instantly. The majority of the novel focuses on a relatively small squabble between a small town and the Tusken Raiders assaulting its people. However, by making his characters so real and so human John Jackson Miller makes you feel as if the universe itself hangs in the balance. It is this group of characters and their interactions with one another that shape the outlook and personality of a stranger in town known only as "Ben".

In my opinion, the book's greatest triumph is showing a softer side of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Because of the former Jedi Order's rules against showing emotion, we rarely see Kenobi's human side in Episodes I-III. In this novel, however, he is on his own and truly alone for the first time in his life, allowing him to consider new viewpoints and learn to know entirely new types of people. The reader is kept appraised of his internal struggle through brief meditations with his former Master Qui-Gon Jinn. As the book progresses, he learns more about himself, the galaxy, and where he fits in a changed universe.

Whether you are a diehard fan of Star Wars novels or someone who simply appreciates the movies, this book will take your breath away. In just under 400 pages, Miller takes readers on an emotional journey with new characters of his own creation and old favorites. Whether you are a newcomer to the galaxy or a longtime resident looking for a refreshing point of view, this book will not disappoint.

A Long Time ago on Tatooine.

An excellent Star Wars western. A perfect blend of western, firefly, and star wars. It really shows what an author can do when he sets out to write a "different" star wars book. Not filled with epic space battles or force battling jedi. A simple yet complex story of a Jed Master in hiding doing his best to remain anonymous, and watch over his infant charge. He settles down in the wastes of the desert with his eopie, and soon discovers the settlement over the rise. Kenobi moves at a good pace, and is filled with rewarding characters. Really a good read in my opinion. However, the one problem i have with the book, and its author is the way that the sand people are portrayed. I like my sand people with a little more honor, and more pleasant social dynamic. Miller portrays the Tuskens as near savages who would gladly murder their own children less they bring them shame and live their entire life bundled up in rags as a show that life is unfair, and often times sucks for those that dwell among the sand. Like i said little too muslim extremist for my taste and have no place in a Star Wars book. A real downer. Overall though Kenobi offers up some great insight into the Jedi Masters thought process as he tries to survive on Tatooine. Last thing, we get some teases of Kenobi meditating and conversing with the dead master Qui-Gon as we saw a little of in the novelization of Revenge of the Sith. Sadly Qui-Gon never answers Kenobi and leaves him all alone to fend for himself and make the best decisions he can. Good read could have been a bit better.

Stellar Star Wars novel from start to finish!

With the loss of his once-promising apprentice still a raw wound, Obi-Wan Kenobi retreats to the remote planet of Tatooine, charged with guarding the galaxy's hope of redemption -- young Luke Skywalker. But until that far-off day that Luke should finally meet his destiny, Obi-Wan determines to adapt to a life without the sense of community and far-flung driving purpose that he once knew. But despite his determination to remain unnoticed and unremarked, descending into obscurity even on a backwater planet such as Tatooine proves harder to accomplish than the one-time hero of the Clone Wars ever expected. With Luke delivered into the custody of his uncle Owen Lars for safekeeping, Obi-Wan -- now calling himself Ben -- determines to settle into the role of watchman some distance away, resigned to a life of watchful meditation. Getting drawn into the lives of the settlers in the area is the last thing he needs...

Dannar's Claim, a trading post, inn, and bar, operated by Annileen Caldwell and her children Kallie and Jabe is the center of life at The Oasis, the hub around which those brave souls attempting to eek out a living from Tatooine's harsh environment seek community and connection. Dannar's Claim also houses the Settler's Call, the brainchild of moisture farmer and entrepreneur Orrin Gault. The Call is a subscription alarm service, consisting of a fund managed by Gault that coordinates the community response to attacks on subscribers by Tusken Raiders. As the best friend of Annileen's late husband, the lives of the Caldwells and the Gaults are inextricably entwined. When Tusken attacks spike, led by the raider known only as Plug-eye, tensions spike between Annileen and her long-time friend, made worse by her son's insistence on joining Orrin's dangerous raids. As tensions between the settlers and the Tuskens mount, a reclusive stranger named Ben arrives, one whose secrets may hold the secret to the settlers' salvation...if he isn't destroyed first.

It's been YEARS since I read a Star Wars extended universe novel. I cut my science fiction-loving teeth on the likes of Timothy Zahn's Thrawn trilogy, novels which captured not only the feel of the original trilogy, but were superb storytelling that -- long before Disney acquired Lucasfilm and announced plans to make new films -- opened new chapters and introduced new characters to the Star Wars universe. Thanks to Disney's reboot of the extended universe canon, the original extended universe novels that I loved are now no longer canon, but classified as "Legends." However, stories like Kenobi are stellar examples of these books at their best -- illuminating new facets and eye-opening possibilities in the lives of beloved characters like Obi-Wan whose screentime only provides tantalizing hints of their history and potential.

Ewan MacGregor's portrayal of a young Obi-Wan was a highlight of the uneven (to say the least) prequel trilogy, and portrayal heavily influences Miller's characterization of the Jedi Master in Kenobi. I've always viewed Star Wars, particularly Episode IV, as a western in space, and this novel takes the concept of a western space opera and turns it into a full-fledged, old-fashioned classic western epic. Obi-Wan -- now the hermit Ben -- is the retired Gunslinger who wants nothing more than to be left in peace. Orrin, the rancher-cum-robber baron whose once pure motives have been corrupted by a drive to consolidate power and succeed, while Annileen is the determined widow transformed into a businesswoman, one whose once-bright dreams have long laid dormant until the arrival of a stranger, the compelling and mysterious Ben.

Miller knows the story beats of a classic western, and therein lies the success of his exploration of the unknown chapter of Ben's life on Tatooine prior to the arrival of a blue and white astromech droid bearing a desperate plea from a princess. This novel is everything I never knew I wanted from a Obi-Wan-centric story, everything I felt the prequels wasted with an actor of MacGregor's potential bringing a youthful Kenobi to life. Miller brings Kenobi to vibrant, three-dimensional life, delving into the insecurities, questions, and sense of failure he must have grappled with following Anakin's turn to the dark side. Here Miller explores if a man who once thrived on action, who was conditioned to never let a call for help go unanswered, adapt to the life of a hermit -- if such a withdrawal from a society in need is even possible.

I absolutely loved how this novel fleshes out not only Ben's character but the culture of Tatooine, a world that plays a critical role in the Star Wars universe as the home of Luke, the birthplace of Anakin, and the site of a rage-fueled massacre of Tuskens that sets Anakin on a galaxy-shaking trajectory, culminating in his transformation into Darth Vader. While Ben's characterization is a welcome addition to the extended universe, and the settlers are deftly sketched western mainstays, transplanted in space, its the characterization of the Tusken Raider culture that proves most illuminating. On film they are faceless, mindless bandits -- here the Tatooine natives have a culture, history, and drive, led by the formidable, fearless warrior Plug-eye, a Tusken with secrets that, if discovered, could reframe the Tuskens' age-old conflict with the settlers.

Kenobi is peppered with echoes of the films, from mentions of Jabba and the Lars family to suggestions of greater events unfolding in the galaxy as the Empire rises following the Jedi's fall. But putting the Star Wars references aside, Miller has delivered a cracking good western capable of standing beside classics of the genre by the likes of L'Amour and Mulford. This is why I love science fiction, why I adore the Star Wars world -- Kenobi is page-turning adventure filled with compelling characters, explosive action scenes, intrigue, and a classic showdown between good and evil. For all the talk of destiny in the canon, for me Star Wars has always been a story of choice, of choosing light, of choosing to be the best version of one's self., and Miller taps into the timeless nature of that battle. I can only hope that Miller one day gets to revisit this universe, but if not, here he's delivered one of the most satisfying reads in this extended universe -- and if, like me, you can't help but view it as canon...who can blame you? This is a Star Wars (and westerns) at their best -- entertaining, thought-provoking, and just plain fun.

A good supplemental text - Not your first selection

The ten (10) chapters of Bill Orr's text start with the basics of feedlines, ground loss and antenna height, and move through wire antennas, multiband dipoles, loops, 160mtr antennas, tuners, construction projects and related analysis. As a licensed amateur radio operator interested in the HF band, this is the SECOND book I would buy - the ARRL Antenna Book (18th Edition) is the first.

About the Author
David Luke was born in 1921 and is Tutor in German at Christ Church, Oxford. He has published articles and essays on German literature and various prose and verse translations, including Goethe’s Selected Verse (1964) for the Penguin Poets, Kleist’s The Marquise of O and Other Stories (1978) for the Penguin Classics, Thomas Mann’s Tonio Kröger and Other Stories (1970) and Goethe’s Roman Elegies (1977).

Nigel Reeves was born in 1939 and graduated at Worcester College, Oxford, in 1963, taking his D.Phil. in 1970. He was an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at the University of Tübingen and, since 1975, has been Professor of German at the University of Surrey. He is also Head of Department of Linguistic and International Studies there, and Dean of the Faculty of Human Studies. He has translated stories by Kleist and Keller for the Penguin Book of German Stories and has published monographs on Heinrich Heine and Friedrich Schiller.

Kleist is probably the most disturbing and disturbed personality to have contributed to German Romantic literature and he most certainly deserves better recognition and appreciation from non-German readers. I found these translations to be involving and enjoyable, although I am told by native German speakers as well as by those who possess a profound understanding of the language that the subtleties of Kleist's artistry are highly resistant to idiomatic translation.

From the Dark Horse of German Literature

Kleist is the great, dark shadow of the German literary world. Born into a military Prussian family, he chose a literary career over the glory, order and ritual of his ancestors. He became a poet instead of an officer. He wandered from city to city, in search of a home, of solitude, a place to cultivate himself and his literary talents. He worried his friends with his demonic thoughts on suicide. He had a morose character and yet he was equally passionate. Stefan Zweig suggested he suffered from being continually extreme in everything he did, "always the superlative".

This collection of stories is not to be dismissed. "Michael Kohlhaas" is perhaps the quintessential piece; a tale of revenge and the price of vengeance, it is a universal story, appealing to our earthly desire for an "eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth". Kleist creates a world of corruption of conflict. The reader wants revenge for the protagonist but how far can one man go to attain justice? What does he lose, what does he gain?

"The Earthquake in Chile" is another disturbing tale. In the wake of a natural disaster, we learn nothing changes the minds and mindsets of people. The earth shakes but the evil of humankind remains deeply rooted.

"The Betrothal in Santo Domingo" - One could see it as the companion piece to the above. In a world of war and rebellion, who can one trust?

"The Beggarwoman of Locarno" is perhaps the most subtle and haunting of ghost stories. Not only does it revel in the mysterious but it is a morality tale revealing the foibles and flaws of a darkened human spirit.

Kleist never became a high ranking officer in the Prussian military but he saw the world falling apart all around him. His stories are a reflection of the dark times he witnessed within his time and within his psyche.

Reluctant officer and suicidal gentleman

As a playwright, German classic Kleist sits on top of the Olymp, right up there with Goethe and Schiller. He also left a relatively small prose oeuvre behind when he died at 34 (in a suicide pact). An unpublished 2 volume novel is said to have disappeared. What we have is this bunch of stories and some journalism, and letters. He is a classic, but he was no classicist (hence no boredom like eg Goethe's Elective Affinities), and also no romantic. He belonged to no school but his own.

His stories take us into worlds of madness. Passions and restrictive social norms collide and cause endless havoc. A frequent motive is what we would call 'honor killings' nowadays: people, usually women, subjected to the extreme punishment for inappropriate relations.
The title story itself (set in Napoleonic times in Italy) is not quite as extreme in this regard: the Marquise 'only' gets expelled from her parents' home and ostracized, because she does not know how she got pregnant. Hard to believe, admittedly. Hardship steels her character and she attacks: she publishes an ad asking for the father to step up, she would forgive him and marry him. When he turns up it is a man whom she had had a crush on, a Russian count and officer who had saved her from rapists during the war, and had found her fainted. Well, well. Since he had been her angel, now he becomes her devil. But all in all, this is a comparatively sane story, as far as the protagonists go.

There is Kohlhaas, the horse trader who becomes a rebel and outlaw in protest against some junkers mistreating his horses and his servant. In a very German solution, he finds justice for the horses, but also for his crimes. Blind justice with her scale works both ways.

Two cases of honor killings:
A young convent woman in Chile in the 17th century gets sentenced to death for being pregnant, gets saved on the way to the scaffold by a huge earthquake, survives, meets the father of her child, believes to be safe, and goes back to Santiago. A mistake.
A noble woman in the 14th century in Germany is subjected to a Gottesurteil (God's verdict?) by duel when an accused murderer, a knight, claims her as his alibi; her admirer challenges the bad guy. A duel is set up which is supposed to decide over truth. If her friend loses, her denial is considered a lie and she will be burned.(Hard to believe, isn't it? But as Kleist wrote somewhere, probability is not always on the side of truth.)

More violence and madness: A mulatta teenage girl in Haiti during the slave rebellion after the French revolution falls in love with a French officer from Switzerland, who is a captive in the black household where she lives. She tries to save him, which would be her end by her own people. The couple makes romantic promises, but he misunderstands her tactics for liberating him (Swiss have a reputation for being slow sometimes), and kills her.

Kleist was his own world in literary matters, did not belong to anybody's school; he was also not in any political camp, definitely not in his 'own' camp, the Prussian military aristocracy that he ran away from. But also not among the freedom singers. His take on the slave rebellion is entirely unsympathetic.

What a pity the novel got lost.

His stories about her teenage years, with their mix of late nights in Philadelphia's gay clubs, manic worship, and glam-style imitation of David Bowie, as well as tales of Gia's ability to seduce her friends, male and female, are the product of a lot of work and make for very interesting reading. One of the biggest "whatever happened to... ?" queries in the fashion world gets answered here, as Fried, a writer for Philadelphia magazine, details the rise (cover of Vogue ) and fall (death by AIDS) of Gia Carangi, a sultry young beauty who shot to prominence--and shot heroin--during the 1970s disco heyday. It's also a big "what if" story: if Gia had not died, Cindy Crawford (dubbed "baby Gia") may not have become the overexposed supermodedel she is today. Fried obviously means Gia's harrowing life to be partly a cautionary tale for all those young girls who wish to be models. However, Gia had many problems (broken home, drug use, confused sexuality) even before she stepped in front of a camera. Fried deridingly describes a 20/20 segment on modeling as "a report meant to detail 'the dark and anxious' side of the modeling business but manages somehow to make the whole enterprise seem extremely glamorous anyway," yet his saga, packed with juicy scoops about other models and photographers, has the same effect. In other words, this book will have a tremendous appeal to a general audience. For all public libraries.

Intrigued by the HBO movie "Gia"?

Surprisingly relevant to a large segment of people: women, mothers, and daughters, lesbians, sexually ambivalent women, people who have faced addiction, and those touched by AIDS.

After reading this well researched account of gorgeous supermodel Gia Carangi's very brief life, I'm still undecided if she was merely an over indulged pretty junkie or a tragic victim of her own beauty and dysfunctional family. Like most things though, the truth is far more complex and is probably somewhere in the middle. What is clearly apparent is that Gia's looks, and the ruthless profit driven world of fashion that uses and spits out beautiful girls in a macabre machine draped in gold lame and false promises, provided the catalyst that led to her demise.

From awkward pre-teen to AIDS victim at 26, Fried covers Gia's life through unflinching eyes and takes the reader on a heady journey: latch-key teen from a broken family, David Bowie fanatic, meteoric rise (at the impressionable age of 17 no less) to official globe trotting uber-hottie, drug experimentation that eventually led her to the seedy heroin shooting galleries of NYC's infamous Lower East Side, black-balled from the tight knit modeling world, relocating to the underbelly of Atlantic City in an unbelievably destructive relationship, then total rehabilitation only to be finally destroyed by AIDS in a time when AIDS was just being understood. Oh yes, it's a heady journey indeed and Fried deserves more than a nod for navigating the reader through it.

An insightful look into what it means to be more than merely pretty in America. Especially when the role of glamour girl is not especially welcome.

Ain't Enough Stars For This Book!

This book should be in every American home.
It is a brilliant telling of a tragic situation, in which a very beautiful young woman was placed, without the core values or life skills to negotiate it. What woman divorces her husband AND her children? What woman allows her 16 year-old daughter to move to New York City, unchaperoned? There is no excuse for the lack of parenting. The book is an excellent story of how fashion, i.e. advertising, works, and her stellar place within it. She was ill-equipped to utilize her status within the fashion community to create a beautiful life for herself. Her habit became an addiction. Her addiction became a disease. Her disease became a death sentence. It truly is a tragic story. but, still, there remains a sad, melancholy beauty that is still reflected in sensual. elegant images of this young Italian girl.
Her legacy will endure.

Gia comes alive in this book - vivid !

This book closes the door on the movie - with this book u know the true answers an the reality of Gia's life . She seemed to know how far she came which is good an her purpose is such an example for us all . I finished the book in 5 days - an I didn't want to but it's such a page turner . Gia was so alone in her life but she seemed very funny as well wish I can say more Stephen fried did a great job wish he would update more recent stuff on some of the people in the book . This is a go to book if u want to read the truth about her instead of the movie . No one was truly there for Gia . Mt daughter would not be in the rain sleeping on a mattress getting raped or at a bus station with full blown aids alone while I go check on my sones new baby arrival ? Thank u Stephen for the books honesty . When I say I wish I could say more its because I have a lot to say in reference to Gia's acquaintances an the people she should not have trusted . In the end Gia kept people in her life for all the wrong reasons because her family was not there for her . So she depended on her friends an loves for everything an that was used against her as well by these people . If your interested in the truth read this book Gia was noT just another pretty face at all . An her life was anything but perfect she was always alone even in the end she was alone .

May be your first book on Options

This book assumes that the reader already have familiarity with stocks, and would like to move further, to options. The author doesn't take into account the fundamental analysis of the underlying security, however, there is a chapter about the technical analysis. In my point of view, it is a drawback: a reader already familiar with the stock market may be aware of the technical analysis, so either both technical and fundamental need to be covered or none.

The book covers three types of options: stock options, index options, and ETF options. There is a separate chapter devoted to ETFs, but a reader already familiar with a stock market will get no benefit from this chapter.

The book is printed with quite a large font have quite much space around the text, so it is quick to read. This may be a good introductory book to options. It is pretty basic and easy to understand, however, it fails to address an important technique of selling puts as a way of buying the underlying security. Warren Buffett obtains most of his stock holdings through selling puts. He got most of his Coca-Cola Holdings this way, and, recently, Burlington Northern Santa Fe.

If you need a much deeper book on options, I would recommend "The Options Course" by the same author. It doesn't have the drawbacks above mentioned, very friendly and easy to understand, although it is a much lengthier read.

Good for wrapping up loose ends

What this book lacks in detail, it makes in subject completeness.

There are dozens and dozens of great websites out there describing options and trading strategies in far better depth and completeness than this book. So, if you're looking for complex spreads or techniques, this book will not satisfy you.

However, online searches are so saturated in trading strategies that it's actually difficult to become aware of real world transactional details (like, "who are the market makers? how does assignment work?"). this book nicely wraps up those "loose ends" that are hardly ever mentioned on your favorite search engine.

You guys have judged this too harshly

Options is an area that is very complex, and, if anything, the author dumbed it down too much. There are a lot of ways to make mistakes with options.

This book does a good job of covering the basics and beyond. If you are having trouble understanding parts of it, don't blame the book. The subject matter is difficult for those new to it. Take your time with this material. Unlike other areas of study, being wrong in options can cost you money. While the author lists some pros and cons with paper trading, I found it to be useful for my own learning. Look for a brokerage that offers this. This will also help you get used to the mechanics of opening and closing positions without risking actual money.

Also, you do not have to master the numerous strategies discussed in the book to make use of options. You can buy single calls and puts and gain leverage while keeping thigs simple.

The author has written more advanced books when you are ready to dig into the statistics more deeply.
