A Treasure Trove

Very nicely done!

I'm a bit weak yet to understand the details of some of what this book has to offer. (I'm not certain of my strength, as I seldom play online, but the people I play seem to estimate me around 10k-13k.) But, even at my level, memorizing these games and going over the commentary in the book has already, I believe, made me a stronger player.

The writing is clear and easy to read, even if you don't yet understand all of the implications of what is being said.

I look forward to years of added depth as rereads and further play bring me toward a deeper understanding of the incredibly rich teaching that this book has to offer.

I also really like the way Lee Sedol 9P and his sister (she helped him write the book) included commentary about his emotional state and thoughts during the games, as well as some anecdotes about his life. While perhaps not strictly necessary, they liven up the book and give it some added character.

About the Author
Natalia Karoway is a lover of transformation. Through shamanism, yoga, and sacred ceremony, she is devoted to creating a beautiful, safe, and joyful space for our souls to come alive and remember our highest potential. She believes that when we are able to remember, we are able to heal. Natalia officially stepped onto the shamanic path in 2011 when her own soul was calling out for deeper healing and deeper meaning. It was at this time that she experienced transformation unlike any other and in that moment, Natalia truly fell in love with life. Her training started with The Four Winds Society where she received certification in shamanic energy medicine. Upon completion, she began further training under Jose Luis Herrera, diving infinitely deeper into the authentic indigenous medicine of Peru. Natalia has also been blessed enough to receive rites of passage and training from multiple medicine lineages—and from the land itself—in the high Andes of Peru. It is Natalia’s honor to provide sacred healing space for groups. She guides shamanic journeys to explore empowered paths to self healing. She hosts despacho ceremonies, bringing beauty, intention, and service to the practice of prayer. Natalia also teaches yoga fused with shamanic wisdom as a powerful way to physically move stagnant energy. No matter the path, all of her work culminates in allowing you to step fully into a life that you can truly love. Though she is a wanderer at heart, Natalia is currently living and loving in Massachusetts with her web designer husband where they enjoy exploring nature, sitting in ceremony, practicing yoga, and dreaming up their next adventure.

I am familiar with the practices of ceremony from the Andean tradition that Natalia so beautiful, generously and genuinely shares, and this gift literally had me in tears. So much beauty and heart expressed so powerfully yet so simply in Living Sacred Ceremony. Each offering had me wanting to run out and do that particular ceremony myself, right then and there. I also teach ceremony and sacred living in my work, and I will absolutely be recommending and sharing Living Sacred Ceremony with my students. It is a perfect introduction to creating and living with ceremony in our day to day lives, with step by step explanations of both how and why, and leaves plenty of room for personal exploration. Great Suggestions for Ceremonies

This book does an amazing job explaining the basics of ceremony and its personal purpose. I love how this book encourages others to create according to their own personal and internal needs, rather than follow someone else's idea when it comes to ceremony. It ask readers to step outside of the mundane and to create personalized, individual and unique ceremony. More importantly this author suggest by doing this we can put the power of healing back into our own hands thro ceremony and learn to depend on and trust ourselves.

It was very entertaining reading during my daily bus commuting to work and back home and definitely worth $4.99.
All 10 stories have almost similar and a bit primitive plots: older and busy husbands not paying enough attention to their younger and attractive hot wives. Those young ladies never miss an opportunity to get themselves satisfied and afterwards humiliate their submissive husbands in public ... making them enjoy other men's leftovers ...

Stop, hey what's that sound

There's something happinin here
What it is ain't exactly clear (Buffalo Springfield)

So this is "The" book behind the film. Now let's forget about the film.

I like stories about big bugs, dangerous plants, and was looking forward to voracious sharks. What I got was a love story and a dead cat. I do not like stories where the bad guys have to pick on cats and dogs to show how bad they are. Not even sharks look for cat chow or doggie snacks.

We start out with a great premise of a displaced shark that just needs a kinibble on the way to where ever he is going. There is a consciences sheriff that does not want people feeding the wildlife (especially with their bodies). A standard money grubbing business man that wants the beaches left open.

A few bites now and then "and the search is on" makes for a great read. Then we forget about the shark and the havoc to concentrate on a woman with bodily needs (in very graphic pros.) Back to the shark and again forget about the shark again as the family pet gets dispatched (in very graphic pros.) Then back to the shark and captain Ahab.

Nice ending sort of makes up for the straying off target middle.

Not really as described

This book arrived quickly, it was in good condition. But it is NOT printed with "First Edition" as described. It's also NOT the version in the picture with the original "shark" image that is shown in the photo (probably the sleeve, but missing anyway). From what I can see, it's either a book club version or perhaps a pirated copy - there are plenty of those around. But the price was OK, so I'll keep it. The owner of the business (called "sometimes") says that they have a perfect 5-star rating, and that they strive to be honest. I like that attitude and I was ready to give it 5 stars when it arrived so soon, but it just wasn't as described, yet still worth the fair price.

Grade 4-6-Sixth-grader Leah's sense of self is badly shaken when she learns that her mother's weeks-long silence has been hiding a cross-country move that doesn't include her. The fact that her "mother" is actually her stepmother is only gradually revealed to readers. As Leah starts to let go of her bitterness, she makes tentative progress toward a solid relationship with her father and a restored sense of who she is. The strengths of the book are Leah's well-developed character and the realistic nastiness she displays as an outlet for her misery. Her inability to focus on schoolwork and her purposeful attempts to wound her father's new wife both help to capture the extent of her loss. The close friendship she forms with a boy is less convincing, given sixth-grade social norms. In addition, her father is drawn as a puzzlingly positive character, which seems at odds with her previous lack of relationship with him. Readers who enjoy quiet stories of personal growth will likely overlook these slightly implausible plot elements and respond to Leah's journey as she seeks a place to belong.

New in town, she's an outsider at school until Will throws her a lifeline and tries to be her friend. As the two lonely kids secretly explore the darkened auditorium to get away from the cafeteria crowd during their lunch period, they start to build a trusting relationship. At home, though, Leah's anger and feelings of abandonment make for difficulties with distant Dad and overcompensating Gail. Cautiously, Leah finally begins to confront all that has happened to her, and with Will's steadfast encouragement, she takes some positive steps: she tries out for a play and stands up to a girl who harasses her. Will's wisdom and manner belie his age, and Leah's growing strength and self-knowledge evolve a little too quickly as the story spins toward a happy ending; but the characters are very appealing, and the plot will hold readers' attention. I really liked this book. I read it in one sitting, because I didn't want to put it down. I recommend this book to any girl around the age of 11 or 12. It is a really good plot with realistic characters. I really liked it.

Good book!

Leah's whole world has been turned upside down. She is suddenly living with her father and new stepmother while her sister and mother move across the country. She's the new kid in sixth grade and feels totally lost and alone. In her struggle, she lashes out at her stepmother, avoids others at school and retreats to a world of her own imagination. It is only when Will, another lonely student, reaches out to her that Leah is able to dream and stake a claim on her future.

Almost Home takes a hard look at what it means to be a family and what happens when that family is broken apart. As told through Leah's eyes, Nora Raleigh Baskin vividly captures the loneliness of divorce, yet provides some hope for the future.

Leah begins to find her own voice through the support of Will and a few kind words from a teacher. Leah's character is fully developed and written with honesty showing both her positive and sometimes nasty sides. By creating a believable character in Leah, young readers are able to relate and grow along with her. While some of the characters surrounding Leah are not as convincingly drawn, the focus remains on her thoughts and personal growth, and therefore does not hinder the feeling behind the story.

Armchair Interviews says: Almost Home is an honest portrayal of the difficulties of surviving a divorce and the tremendous growth that comes from discovering your own place in the world.

GREASTEST BOOK EVER

This book is great for tweens ages 9-14. I could easily relate to the main character Leah, and all her actions and emotions. Baskin really puts down in words what is going on in a 12 year old's head. I couldn't put the book dwon for a second IT WAS GREAT~I would read this book over and over again. If you love this book (like i do) i highly request reading her 1st book WHAT EVERY GIRL EXCEPT ME KNOWS, also.

Aishwarya Tipnis is an architect from the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi, with a Master s Degree in European Urban Conservation from the University of Dundee, Scotland. She is the recipient of Commonwealth Professional Fellowship 2011, Bonjour India Travel Fellowship from the Embassy of France 2010, and the Scottish International Scholarship 2006. Her work focuses on bridging the gap between contemporary architecture and conservation practice and believes that heritage environment is the starting point for sustainable development. As an urban conservation consultant her projects include Redevelopment of Chandni Chowk Delhi, Redevelopment of the Lady Hardinge Medical College and Hospital, New Delhi, and the Identifi cation of Shared Cultural Heritage: French Heritage in India. She is currently a visiting faculty at the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi.

Like Purmell and Weber’s Christmas Tree Farm (2006), this blends light fiction with nuts-and-bolts about an outdoorsy family business. Two children, Hannah and Hayden, appear perched on a horse-drawn sled headed for Grandpa’s “sugar bush,” where they join three generations of family members (and a bevy of onlooking forest creatures) in collecting, boiling, and bottling the season’s first batch of maple syrup. Apart from the characters’ L. L. Bean–like fashions and the trendy names of the featured kids, the family’s traditional syruping methods evoke a bygone era, as do Weber’s folk-art-style paintings, which are reminiscent of Will Moses’ quaint country scenes. The reliance on end matter to explain terminology, such as sheeting and hydrometer, seems odd, since readers unfamiliar with syruping will want this information up front. Still, the book’s interesting backstory about a product most children find more than a little appetizing will sweeten early-spring curricula. Given widespread “buy locally” campaigns, the small-farm emphasis will have appeal outside the classroom, too. Grades 1-4. --Jennifer Mattson

Jill Weber is an illustrator and book designer. Her heartwarming illustrations have appeared in a wide range of books for children and adults. Kirkus Reviews raved that the "childlike feel" of her gouache illustrations for Ann Purmell's Maple Syrup Season "suits the family-centered text perfectly." She lives on a farm in New Hampshire.

Ann Purmell has written several picture books for children. Before becoming an author she worked with children and teenagers as a psychiatric nurse for many years.

syrup making book for kids

This book tells the basic story behind making maple syrup, but has some artwork that is not at all like the process we personally use to make syrup. They show animals drinking sap from the buckets while that hang on the trees. I don't know who allows this to happen, maybe some do, but not in my sugarbush! Otherwise it is fun and informative.

The Brockwells, a large extended family, enjoy producing maple syrup together. Every member of the family, including the little cousins and the grandparents, has a job to do in the various stages of production. First they tap the maple trees and hang buckets to collect the sap, and when the buckets have filled, they pour the sap into a giant barrel to take to the sugarhouse. From a storage tank in the sugarhouse, the sap runs into evaporating pans and is heated to a boil. Once the correct temperature is reached and enough water has boiled off, the syrup is ready to be filtered, poured into jars, and graded according to sweetness and color.

This excellent book is sure to please with its informative text and delightful art work. The clear descriptions, detailed illustrations, and author's note in the back all work well together to make Maple Syrup Season a useful resource for teachers seeking to spice up a lesson about natural resources. Armed with new knowledge about the difference between Fancy Grade and Grade A-Dark Amber, the reader may see a whole new side to things while walking through the maple syrup section of the local grocery store.

Favorite Picture Book on Maple Syrup for Young Children

I just read through a number of picture books on making maple syrup with my children (ages 2-9). This was my favorite. The illustrations were delightful enough to keep the attention of even my 2 year old, and the text provided enough information so that all my children could learn about the process. We also enjoyed Sugaring, Sugarbush Spring, & Sugar Snow (My First Little House).
