A 1000% improvement on an already great work!

Why it took so long to organize Vine's this way is a mystery, but when I laid eyes on the commentary format of this work, I knew my teaching preparation would be improved tremendously.

I've always loved word studies, but admittedly, put Vine's away in favor of more commentary-oriented reference material. But now seeing his excellent and thorough exegesis exactly where each term belongs in a passage is a tremendous improvement. The book cross-references itself nicely, and it's as if a wise mind took a mere handful of days and organized them into a calender. I really feel the use of Vine's work and effort are now fully utilizable.

For those who don't recall Vine's as he was, you may not apppreciate how truly helpful this new format has become. The dictionary was good. The commentary is outstanding! If Dr. Vine could see this, I have no doubt he'd say: "...now why didn't I think of that?"

My previous sleep book, and the predecessor to this one, is The No-Cry Sleep Solution. It provides answers to better sleep for children from the day of birth through toddlerhood. My youngest child was a very frequent night-waking, all-night breastfeeding-baby. My experience learning how to help him sleep all night was the incentive for me to write my first no-cry sleep book. Since then, I have corresponded with tens of thousands of parents, and I have expanded my research up through the preschool years to bring you this edition of The No-Cry Sleep Solution.

Because the magic of children is that they are all very different from one another, and that they are unique in their transitions from one stage of growth to the next, this edition of The No-Cry Sleep Solution crosses paths with the first for that in-between stage from baby to toddler. A lot of suggestions

I have a 14 month who is considered a toddler at that age. I thought the book would address her, but she doesn't fit into too many of the suggestions yet because she can't talk and is still learning a lot. I did like that the book offered a lot of suggestions, which I did not realize suggestions would be the answer. I was expecting a plan, but the suggestions so you can tailor your own plan actually makes sense. I was looking for an easy answer like a dope!

Got for my daughter to read for my grandchild. She tried some of the methods and not sure how well they work for all children, but it depends on the child and why they cry when you try to leave them when putting to bed.

An Outstanding Resource for Tired Parents Everywhere!

Elizabeth Pantley has done it again! This is a truly outstanding book just PACKED with great ideas on how to get your toddler or preschooler to sleep well!

The author goes over what healthy toddler and preschooler sleep should be [for those of us who've never seen it yet in our children and have no clue what that looks like! :) ] She then gives detailed and very helpful instructions to parents on how to create a sleep plan to make improvements in the child's sleep situation. She goes over some basic "common sense" rules [which weren't so common sense to me since I wasn't doing half of them before I read this book!]. Then the second half of the book is devoted to in depth discussion of different specific sleep problems [ie: night terrors, "I'm not tired", etc] and ideas for overcoming these problems. The very end of the book includes a section on how to recognize actual sleep disorders and what to do if you child has one.

This book is a literal treasury of ideas - some of which are certain to be helpful! As always, Pantley does a great job balancing the needs of the child with the needs of the parent. She succeeds in helping both get the sleep they need in a gentle and loving way.

I highly recommend this book for any parent of a child who does not sleep well.

Inheriting a Sugarcane Plantation Brings Troubles and Romance

When her father dies, Charley Bordelon is surprised to inherit an 800 acre sugarcane plantation in Louisiana. She knows nothing about raising sugarcane. Her father wasn't a farmer either, but he mortgaged everything he had to buy these 800 acres.

Charley is a widow with a preteen daughter. She badly needs a fresh start and the only option is the sugarcane plantation. She settles in with her delightful grandmother, Miss Honey, and her other relatives. The one blot on the horizon is her half-brother. He has been in trouble most of his life; now he's back, and he resents that Charley got the whole inheritance.

Learning the sugarcane business isn't easy, particularly since no one wants to help her. Charley struggles against the odds and the desire to give up, but eventually finds help and a surprising romance.

The unusual characters and the lovely setting make this book a delight to read. I enjoyed the descriptions of farm life, but they could be tedious to someone with no background in farming. I also found the plot rather slow even when Charley finds romance. She does a great deal of talking to herself about her troubles and it becomes repetitious. However, the setting and characters make it worth the read.

Best Read for me in a long time!

OK, so this is a first for me. I have never written a review before. I just finished the book and absolutely loved it! The story, the characters, the themes, the details and the descriptive imagery are all wonderful. I was thoroughly entertained and really did not want to put the book down. I read a lot and this book is by far my favorite in quite awhile. I recommending it to all my friends. I really can see the story as a movie as well. I have even fantasized about the actors and actresses who might be great in the character roles. I look forward to more stories from Natalie Baszile!

Transport yourself to the Bayou

I read this atmospheric novel of the Louisiana sugar cane farmers life in one sitting. It was the perfect book to curl up with on a rainy day. I could not put it down. Wish it was another 300 pages!

Scott Bestul is a Field Editor for "Field & Stream" and has been with the magazine since 1993. The author of two books and a widely published freelance writer, Bestul has hunted whitetails in 16 states, with bow, shotgun, muzzleloader and rifle. The Wisconsin native now makes his home in the rugged bluff country of southeastern Minnesota with his wife Shari and teenage twins Brooke and Bailey.
Dave Hurteau is a Senior Editor for "Field & Stream" magazine, specializing in deer hunting, bow hunting, and shooting in general. He was a contributor to the recent "Total Gun Manual" and the editor of F&S's "Gun Nuts" content. He lives in upstate New York with his wife and two sons, and hunts whitetails as often as he can.

Let's read the "Deer Book"

In my opinion this is a great book.

I shot my first doe and buck at age 12 and 13. 15 years passed with very little deer hunting on my part. I decided to take up deer hunting again. I bought the book a few months before the 2014 season. Within 20 minutes of reading I had learned more than I ever knew before.

The book is organized into a few main parts, then further broken down into short paragraphs about each one of the tips or "skills". This makes for a very easy read and fit my reading style. In other words, it is easy to pick up for a few minutes at a time. In fact, my 3 year old daughter likes this book as much as I do. Most night's she would say, "Let's read the Deer Book."

After reading this book I was able to better prepare for the season. I scouted, planted a food plot, made fake scrapes, learned to read the "signs", put up 2 stands, learned what worked best to cover my scent, etc.. Not that the book taught me everything but it helped me quite a bit.

This year I saw more deer than ever and learned more than ever. We have deer on our property, but they are often difficult to find during the season. As an example 2 family members that hunted the same land for many, many years were very shocked to learn that I was seeing 2-3 deer every time I went and even 9 deer one night.

I did manage to get a big 6 pt to visit my scrape site Mid October and got 4 great pictures on my trail cam. That buck disappeared until late November where I got a shot. My first Tennessee Deer and the biggest buck of my life (not huge compared to many states but good sized for my area at 135 lbs field dressed, roughly 3.5-4 yrs old) and my first season back hunting. I attribute a lot of that to this book and persistence in the field.

Overall it is a great book and one that I will likely re-read for many years to come.

Just buy the book already!

Great Book

I am new to deer hunting, but have had to desire to do it my whole life. This book has been very educational to me and I would recommend it to anyone who is also just getting started. Found out about this book through my Outdoor Life magazine subscription, they wanted two payments of ~$20. This price was much more affordable.

Great book pictures are beautiful, a lot of tips based on research and experiment great book weather your new to hunting or a veteran there is just do much information in it, I got the hard cover good binding, broken down easy to understand and written with some humor...

Not as useful as a hard copy book.

I work in the medical field and wanted quick reference for medical terms (preferably with illustrations) for my new Kindle Paperwhite and/or my Galaxy Tab. The idea was to be able to quickly look up anything from vasculature to bone structure to pathology in one easy reference. The way this book is indexed it is too slow and difficult to look things up. It is actually faster for me to walk down the hall to the reference library, find the appropriate book, photocopy a page, and return, than it is to go to the alphabetical index on the kindle and page through until you find the term. The search function is slower yet and gives either nothing found or 40 pages of excerpts where the term is used but without a definition. It frequently gave "no results" for simple terms like "diabetes", "sinus tarsi", and "siphon".

Best one I have bought and I now have 3

This one is the best one I have found and I have bought three including this one. I bought the other two in past semesters and found that I needed to keep going elsewhere for key information I needed for study. I really like that each term is in boldface color. And there are many diagrams and pictures to help you visualize the part of the anatomy that some of the terms are referring to. It is a must have for any medical/nursing student. I also recommend getting the Mosby's flash cards also. They are the most detailed.

I like the way the book starts with bonds between atoms before the obligatory chapter on crystalline solids, followed by an excellent treatment of mechanical properties. The standard topics of solid-state physics are then presented, starting with electronic properties. There is a splendid final chapter on polymers. The style is confident, authoritative and up to date ...Richard Feynman, in evaluating his own attempt to teach quantum mechanics early in a physics course, reckoned he had failed. OK for conceptual level understanding but not very rigorous and with several mathematical errors.

I assigned this book for my Materials Physics and Engineering class once, 2 1/2 years ago (basically solid state physics) and I found it wanting. There are numerous errors in the equations in the chapters on semiconductors and dielectrics and the level of discussion was too low for my class of mostly senior physics and materials science majors. I was told however by a junior physics major that she found it a good book from which to learn the concepts of materials before delving into the more rigorous text I had used last year. I have taught solid state physics using the books by Kittel, Hook and Hall, and Hofmann. The Kittel is too expensive for what you get but is the standard by which many others are judged. The book by Hook and Hall I think is more thorough and discusses many topics better than Kittel. Finally the book by Hofmann I would considered a steam-lined, yet still rigorous version of either the Kittel or Hook and Hall books. For my next class, I'll be recommending for those students who might need help with the concepts of solid state physics that they try to find an inexpensive used copy of the book by Turton as a supplement to my main text.

Not bad, quite a few errors

Currently using this for a physics solid state course. It's not a bad book, but when examining a physics text, it'd help to have more math involved (which this book seems to surpass). Also, this book has numerous errors which make it aggrivating when reading or doing problems. One thing that is nice however is the answers to all the problems are in the back. Again, would be nice if these problems were perfect but some still have errors..

Hands down the most comprehensive guide to real Shanghai food

If you're headed to Shanghai and you love local eateries and authentic street food, you have two choices:

1. Cobble together a list from a variety of websites and online forums, hoping it includes the necessary street addresses, Chinese characters, and other up-to-date info you'll need to actually make it useful once you're on the ground.

2. Spend a few bucks, save yourself a ton of time, and buy Glutton Guide Shanghai.

Jamie and Kyle have done all the footwork. They've spent years exploring every corner of Shanghai and designing tours that take visitors to Shanghai to the places you'll want to check out. I'll admit it, I'm a bit biased because I spent a few years eating my way through Shanghai, and I even led a few of the tours they designed.

I don't live in Shanghai anymore, so I got the Glutton Guide to make sure I have all the most recent information when I do head back and gorge myself on soup dumplings and crawfish. It's also a serious nostalgia trip for me. These are things that most expats won't know about unless they've sought them out, and many locals won't bother mentioning to visitors. The guide has the name of practically every little longtang alleyway I ever wandered down, all the random markets I was surprised to find, and best of all it's got the ones I still haven't had a chance to check out yet.

I used this guide on a recent trip to Shanghai and it was amazing!!! The description of the food, along with photos, tips on how to eat it, and exactly where to find it was incredibly helpful. The street food section led me to places I never would've gone on my own, and the English and Mandarin translations made it super easy to order and made me feel confident that not only was I ordering correctly, but that I was getting the good stuff. Everything I tried that was recommended from the guide book was delicious. I highly recommend this guide book if you want to eat well in China!!!

Excellent foodie guide for Shanghai

Bought this for an upcoming trip to Shanghai, after the realisation that I didn't do Shanghai food justice in my first trip there. Good detailed information on the restaurants, as well as general dining information.
