About the Author

Steve Martinelli is an OpenStack Active Technical Contributor and a Keystone Core Contributor. He primarily focuses on enabling Keystone, which is OpenStack's Identity Manager, to better integrate into enterprise environments. Steve was responsible for adding Federated Identity and OAuth support to Keystone and was one of the leading contributors to Keystone to Keystone federation support for interoperable hybrid cloud enablement. In his spare time he also contributes to OpenStackClient, pyCADF, and oslo.policy and is a core contributor in each of these projects. Steve received his B.ASc. in Computer Engineering from York University.

Henry works in IBM's Cloud division as an OpenStack Architect and a core contributor to OpenStack Keystone, driving enterprise capabilities into OpenStack as well as IBM's products that use OpenStack. He has a long history of developing enterprise software, graphics and communication systems as well as nanotechnology, having founded numerous successful companies in Europe and the USA, finally coming to IBM via acquisition in 2009. He holds a 1st class honors degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southampton, UK.

Dr. Brad Topol is an IBM Distinguished Engineer in the IBM Cloud Architecture and Technology organization. In his current role, Brad leads a development team focused on contributing to and improving OpenStack and he has cross-IBM responsibility for coordinating its contributions to OpenStack. Brad is an OpenStack core contributor to Keystone-Specs, Pycadf, and Heat-Translator and has personally contributed to multiple OpenStack projects including Keystone, Pycadf, Heat-Translator, and DevStack. He received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1998.

A great read, every OpenStack user and developer should have one within arms reach

I have read and re-read the Keystone book by Brad, Steve, and Henry. I think it is a very well written book and provides a wealth of details for both a user of Keystone and an OpenStack contributor who wishes to either contribute to Keystone or some other project that will interact with Keystone.

I found the book to be an easy read, with very clear and precise writing, useful illustrations and code interspersed. For example, the section on Fernet Tokens (something new that I was interested in) is one that I found very well written. The sections on Federated Identity and Future Work were very useful as well.

I think anyone who is interested in OpenStack, and anyone who is interested in building a large computer system of any kind should read this book. And so I say, every OpenStack user and developer should have one within arms reach.

Content poor and not good explained

The content of this book looks a bit childish. If someone is learning English, this always means textbooks with childish contents. I thought the 'Business English Books' would be different, but it is almost the same. However, the exercises are not really helpful, the audio cd is good.

"Business Objectives" is targetted towards adult English as a Foreign Language learners who are currently learning with a trainer.
It is directed towards pre-intermediate/intermediate level learners, and supported by teacher's book, cassettes, pairwork material and lively videos, it is comprehensive and up-to-date.
Topics include: meeting people, telephoning, presentations, socialising, describing products and trends - each in easy-to-use units that can be used as on-going training, or stand alone modules. It makes great use of sketches and role plays, and references to actual companies and situations and for a trainer with little business experience it is easy to use.
Its partner "Business Opportunities" is directed towards higher level learners, and frankly there is not an English training organisation that I know who is not basing it's business English course around this book. A must!

Ok story but almost too sweet. Rich handsome guy falls for dowdy, accident-prone small town girl.

STORY BRIEF:
Abram built a shipping empire. He is dying and went to a small coastal town in Maine to spend his last days. He met Willa who owns a casket making company. He wants Willa to marry one of his grandsons, for her benefit and for their benefit. His three grandsons lost their parents at an early age and were raised by Abram. The three grandsons are confirmed bachelors. Abram retired and gave Willa his proxy to vote to choose one of them as his successor. Willa traveled to and attended the board meeting in New York City as a favor to Abram. For some reason, Sam (one of the grandsons) is nearby to see and help her survive accidents such as getting her purse caught in the elevator door, getting locked out of her hotel room, etc. Willa is suffering guilt over some things in her life. She doesn't live a normal life due to guilt, and she's a bit whiny.

REVIEWER'S OPINION:
This was a pleasant romance novel, but there was nothing new or different enough to make it stand out from the rest. I think Sam fell in love with Willa too soon and too easily. He dated a number of women over the years for no more than a few months each. I didn't understand how he "fell in love at first sight" with a dowdy, unsophisticated, accident prone woman. I would have preferred watching things happen between them for awhile before he fell in love.

Minor irritation (publisher's fault): Sam has hair on his chest. The guy on the cover does not.

Diamond Dust is full of treasures of short stories!

If you don't know Anita Desai, the Indian-German writer and author, you should get to know her. She might be the next Nobel Prize winner in literature. This compilation of short stories was picked up by me at a drugstore for only a dollar. The short stories include in this selection are Royalty, Winterscape about an Canadian Indian man and his unusual parentage, Diamond Dust which is truly a tragedy about a beloved animal, Underground about a British couple traveling abroad, The Man Who Saw Himself Drown is an unusual but entertaining story, The Artist's Life, Five Hours to Simla or Faisla, Tepozlan Tomorrow, and The Rooftop Dwellers. Desai's writing style is packed with details and information about the characters, the setting, and the story involved. Desai's writing style is easy to read but you have to read closely to really appreciate her style and language use. I loved Winterscape the best so far, broke my heart in Diamond Dust, was amused by a man who saw himself drown and lived to tell about it, and I'm working through the rest but I bet she doesn't disappoint her readers.

Grade 8-12 Brian Robeson, 13, is the only passenger on a small plane flying him to visit his father in the Canadian wilderness when the pilot has a heart attack and dies. The plane drifts off course and finally crashes into a small lake. Miraculously Brian is able to swim free of the plane, arriving on a sandy tree-lined shore with only his clothing, a tattered windbreaker, and the hatchet his mother had given him as a present. The novel chronicles in gritty detail Brian's mistakes, setbacks, and small triumphs as, with the help of the hatchet, he manages to survive the 54 days alone in the wilderness. Paulsen effectively shows readers how Brian learns patienceto watch, listen, and think before he actsas he attempts to build a fire, to fish and hunt, and to make his home under a rock overhang safe and comfortable. An epilogue discussing the lasting effects of Brian's stay in the wilderness and his dim chance of survival had winter come upon him before rescue adds credibility to the story. Paulsen tells a fine adventure story, but the sub-plot concerning Brian's preoccupation with his parents' divorce seems a bit forced and detracts from the book. As he did in Dogsong (Bradbury, 1985), Paulsen emphasizes character growth through a careful balancing of specific details of survival with the protagonist's thoughts and emotions. Beware for Younger Readers!

I am a grandmother with small granddaughters, one of whom is a very precocious reader. She is in first grade, and I ordered Hatchet with another book, which she fortunately became interested in. In a fit of boredom, I picked up the book that was left at my house. I was tremendously relieved she had not taken Hatchet to begin it, without the knowledge of me or her parents! I do not think it would have been appropriate for her, at the age of 7. I will be placing it in an unobtrusive location, to wait for her to read when she is a couple years older.

I find it interesting that not a single review I found mentioned at the start, when the pilot of the small aircraft dies mid-flight, the process is very specifically detailed--the odor, the vision of his face as he dies. Additionally, Brian is angry about his mother, and her extra-marital affair--this book is significantly more explicit about adult problems than most children's literature that is written for 3rd and 4th graders. I thought, the Force was with me! I cannot imagine my granddaughter reading this book now. The lesson I learned, is to peruse books I'm not familiar with before I hand them over--I am writing about a little girl whose mother read portions of The Yearling to her at age 5, when she begged and pleaded, and sat attentively throughout! (my daughter said she "edited" as she read the book) For younger readers, I'd advise parental supervision, and discussion of the issues detailed in The Hatchet, if your child is ready for it.

First in an adventure series with great appeal for middle-school, high-school,
and older readers. This is the kind of book that continues in your dreams
once you have put it down. Great for reluctant readers, as well as ESL learning
Gary Paulsen is never consdescending or obviously trying to simplify his
stories. They are simply remarkable at all levels. This would be a great
gift or prize for any boy or girl. Adults seem equally enthusiastic about
this unforgettable book. It does not involve sex, seduction, or ramance,
except the romance of the wild and breathtaking adventure and survival
skills. This story inspires readers to think about our
innate intelligence to survive under difficult circumstances.
A fast-paced, but thoroughly modern Robinson Crusoe adventure.

A great lesson on perseverance

I read this book in elementary school back in 1995-1996. I'm re-reading it and so far it has held up well.

As a kid, this book gave me an appreciation for the outdoors and surviving in the world when the odds are stacked against you. A great lesson on perseverance.

It also instilled an idea in my mind to not take everyday commodities and experiences for granted.

I loved Gary Paulsen's books as a child, and the other Hatchet books in this series are great, too. I just discovered writing this review that there is now a 5th book.

Life Changing Book

I must confess, when I first picked this book up I judged it by it's cover (size). After being assigned to read it at a ministry school I attend I picked it up and subconsciously thought, "This is like a pamphlet, I'll just blow through it and get it out of the way." Boy was I in for a surprise. Though short in length this book is dynamite, fully loaded with powerful truths. You will likely find yourself spending more time reading it than most books as you mull over and digest the life-changing revelations from scripture that Steve consistently unravels from page to page. I have read few books that have had such a dramatic impact on my life. Definitely a 5 star recommendation!!

Cleansing Your Mind

There are so many things we think we don't believe but over time our experience corrupts what we believe and it is only when you are lovingly confronted with the Truth that you realize, that you no longer believe what you thought you believe and it gives you a chance to embrace anew what Jesus says in place of your experience. "Victorious Mindsets" is just that! Each 2-page "chapter" addresses a different truth in clarity from Scripture allowing us to see where our "practical theology" is off and allow God to readjust it! For us we starting reading this and couldn't put it down and in short order God had reordered our minds and as a result the fruit began to manifest almost immediately!

Steve Backlund has totally transformed my life. I have heard him speak many times and have read almost all his books. Victorious Mindsets is a "dangerous" book in the hands of anyone looking to live in greater levels of freedom! The principles in this book are easy to digest and practical in every way. Like all his books, this one is written in devotional form so that you can easily remember what you are learning and the quickly APPLY IT! This book is a no-brainer, just buy it. I have bought far less impacting books for more money and gotten so much less out of them. Victorious Mindsets will give you more value for your time and money than most books you will ever read!
