About the Author
John Norman is creator of the Gorean Saga, a series of novels spanning 25 titles written from 1967 to 1988, that have become cult classics. He has also produced a three-installment fictional series Telnarian Histories plus two other fiction works, and a nonfiction paperback entitled Imaginative Sex, all of which were out of print for many years but are being brought back by New World Publishers. Two new novels in the Gorean saga will be published when the 25 backlist titles are all back in print. Mr. Norman was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1931. He is married and has three children.

Once the blushing shock of the misogyny wears off, the best thing about the Gor books is Norman's world building.

On a quest to find the lost egg of the Priest Kings, Tarl Cabot journeys into the vast grasslands of Gor and encounters the fearsome Wagon Peoples (Mongolian/Cossack analogues). Manly man things and womanly submissions ensue.

Once the blushing shock of the misogyny wears off, the best thing about the Gor books is Norman's world building. It isn't the story-telling, which is just a John Carter knock-off. It isn't the action, which is OK. It isn't the sex, because really, there isn't any (or it is merely implied). It certainly isn't the social commentary, because it is laughable. ("A woman cannot truly be free until she submits utterly as a slave to a man." *yawn* Even Christian Grey could come up with something better than that, and he's a putz.)

Sadly, this fourth book of the Gor series has the least world building thus far, and consequently, was the least enjoyable for me. It also really bothered me that in this book, Cabot apparently gives up on his quest to find his beloved wife, Talena. Instead, he blithely goes about boinking all manner of girls and falls in love with at least two, one of which he keeps as his wife/slave/free companion/sub/whatever. Clearly, I'm the only one troubled by this, and this troubles me.

Pop Culture Anachronism

It's so hard to know how to review this book. Does one appreciate it for being an antiquated relic of SciFi-Fantasy? Or boggle at the mind-blowingly bad writing so dreadful that it not only sweeps past the So-Bad-Its-Good category but moves right on over to self-parody! Finishing this book left me with so many feelings it's hard to address them all. As I sort through the chaos one thing becomes clear---there is simply NO WAY this series would have been successful had it been published in the modern era. Sure there's lots of violence--- but all of it is bloodless and non-graphic. Not exactly shocking to a public who watches snuff films like the "Saw" series for fun. The sex is barely alluded to and altogether tame to tastes jaded by Starz's "Spartacus" and other fantasy sexploitation shows. In fact, it seems positively prudish, even quaint. It is hard to imagine that this is the series that sparked Feminist protests and got the author banned from SciFi conventions in the 80's. Mr. Norman should write Gloria Steinem a thankyou note for without the all the "controversy" I doubt the series would have had the staying power it has enjoyed. I suppose we owe the author our gratitude for bringing Middle America's naughty little SnM fantasies out of the closet and into our living rooms but other than nostalgia or a glimpse of pop culture history I can't think of a single reason to read this book. I guess ultimately the only measure of a book like this is "Were you entertained?" I must admit I couldn't put this book down--if only to see how much more ridiculous it could get!

A note on the Star Rating: I really don't know how to give this rating either. One Star for the terrible writing? 5 Stars for the entertainment value? Heck with it! FIVE STARS Because writing this bad takes a special talent.

oh, so that's why

Well, at least this tries to explain Tarl Cabot' s shift from rather romantic to really harsh and somewhat cruel. Not being of The Warriors, I felt his transformation was rather extreme, but then, I don't know the codes. Being enslaved sucks, I realize, but when take it out on everyone else?
However, I particularly enjoyed Norman's tales of the nomadic societies; they're far more fleshed-out than the more "men are natural males, and women are natural slaves" cliche of His more urban-based stories. Guilty pleasures, none the less.

For real-world events, these five response systems typically produce a complex mixture of feelings. The book identifies some of the aesthetic possibilities afforded by expectation, and shows how common musical devices (such as syncopation, cadence, meter, tonality, and climax) exploit the psychological opportunities. The theory also provides new insights into the physiological psychology of awe, laughter, and spine-tingling chills. Huron traces the psychology of expectations from the patterns of the physical/cultural world through imperfectly learned heuristics used to predict that world to the phenomenal qualia we experienced as we apprehend the world.

Music and Surprise

Finally, a real five-star book about music. For some reason, there are thousands of books about language, but almost no serious ones analyzing the biology and psychology of humanity's other communication systesms. Every society has a highly developed musical tradition, every society uses music in countless ways including the most sacred religious ceremonies, and yet hardly anyone has stepped forward to analyze it as a basic communication channel for humans.
David Huron's book is on surprise in music. He shows how music creates expectations of pattern, from simple rhythm up to very complex patterns (the concerto, the symphony...) that only sophisticated listeners know. Musicians notoriously love to play with these patterns, to surprise the listeners and thus create new pieces and prevent boredom. Huron distinguishes several types of surprise, on the basis of a highly sophisticated evolutionary and cognitive psychology as well as an astounding knowledge of music. He knows everything from the complexities of Beethoven and Schoenberg to the joik songs of the Saami of arctic Europe, and even knows what happens when you play the latter to rural folk in southern Africa. By contrast, such earlier works as Robert Jourdain's MUSIC, THE BRAIN AND ECSTASY were greatly limited by confining their attention to western classical and classical-derived pop forms, thus missing everything from cross-rhythms to alternative scales.
Surprise presupposes a whole file of knowledge of patterns and schemas, and a deep cognitive and emotional investment in same. Huron takes these mostly for granted. Obviously, the next step is to figure out why people love complicated musical patterns in the first place. Especially, humans love the theme-and-variation type of play with patterns that dominates music from Elizabethan lute solos to jazz to ragas. These are not exactly surprising, especially when you know the pieces, but they are always delightful. Why? Huron mentions body rhythms, speech rhythms, and the like. There is obviously more. I think there is much more about pattern--in music and in general--that we need to study.

Music theory that includes the whole world!

Sweet Anticipation should be required reading for all composers and musicologists. The book plausibly explains how and why music affects human emotions, and it also contains numerous practical factoids that can be used to gauge one's own works against the spectrum of human musical perception. Huron uses statistical analysis and a deep knowledge of recent experimental progress in the psychology of musical perception to paint a picture that goes far beyond often banal music theory. His theories apply to all existing musical traditions, which to me is one of the most interesting aspects of the book, since most music theorists are pathetically myopic when it comes to assessing music as a universal human phenomenon.

This is certainly the best music theory book that I've read in many, many, years. It takes many things that performing musicians intuitively know to be true, and puts them into a more rigorous experimental context than musicians normally use. This being said, the book is probably not that accessible to anyone who does not yet have an undergrad level grasp of classical music theory - if you don't know what a ii-V-I progression is, or you can't see the shape of a melody by looking at an printed musical example, you probably won't get much out of it.

A great book on the Physiology of the human capacity for Music

Why do some of us experience frissons when listening to music? Why is a deceptive cadence still "deceptive" after countless listenings? Why do bad feelings amplify subsequent positive emotions? Why understanding pleasure is important for understanding music?

This and many other interesting questions are addressed in David Huron's book. Central to his theory on how expectations determine emotions in music are our propensity for (imperfect) inductive statistical learning, the unconscious reactions of the fast-track brain and the following slower, contrastive appraisal responses. All integrated convincingly in an evolutionary perspective.

I like the statistical approach used throughout this book to explain important concepts such as expectation, surprise, anticipation, tonality, contra-tonality, syncopation. I liked the parallels drawn between when-related and what-related expectations - music contains "tendency notes" as well as "tendency moments", drumming fills as "embelished tendency tones". Statistical learning can go a long way towards explaining musical expectations (I am however less convinced that a statistical learning theory can ignore Gestalt-based features in its attempt to explain musical phenomena).

Really understanding music is a very hard task, and I agree that music analysis will be far from solving the task as long as the easy "naive realism" approach is preferred to "sophisticated realism". This book offers a good example of empirically founded sophisticated realism.

Cool, Fun and Essential

This book covers a vital an oft-neglected period in animation history. When I first laid eyes upon it, in a bookstore, I think I audibly gasped. It is that beautiful. Do not hesitate to purchase this book, which incidentally, won the Theatre Library Association Award for outstanding book in the area of film or broadcasting. Hopefully, there'll be a sequel.

'Thought I'd Died and Gone to Cartoon Heaven

Like many of my peers, as I grew up, my interest in animation gravitated toward the full animation of the Golden Age: Robert McKimson, Bob Clampett, Chuck Jones, et al, for a long while disdaining any form of animated minimalism, even the kind represented in this book. By the age of 7 or 8, we had come to associate Top Cat, Deputy Dawg, The Flintstones, The Jetsons and all the minimal animation that had once been among our favorites with shoddy cheapness. (Even as a small child, I remember several of us sitting around talking about cartoons, and laughing to scorn at the way the same background tree kept passing every couple of seconds in Hanna-Barbera chase scenes. We wondered, did they think we weren't catching that?!) 'Limited animation', those dread words, became poision for all us growing young animation fans.

I'm not sure when my respect and interest in minimal/modern animation returned in a changed form, but I think it had to be in the mid 80s, when the best of UPA appeared suddenly on a couple of VHS tapes: Gerald McBoing Boing, The Tell-Tale Heart, Unicorn in the Garden, Christopher Crumpet, The Rise of Duton Lange, Family Circus, etc. On the rebound, the '50s fine art/graphic design style of these cartoons knocked me out. After seeing these shorts, I started seeking out more examples of this style of animation in old TV commercial reels, and then started noticing the style spilling over into point of purchase, packaging design and magazine ads of the period. By this point, I was a fatally hooked "modern."

This book will throughly scratch the itch of those baby boomers whose earliest TV memories may include those brief Tom Terrific segments from Captain Kangaroo, as well as the younger reader who will feel the irresistable draw of a very strong retro style. The pictures (and there are a ton of them) are pretty, and instantly evocative, and the text hits a smart median between scholarly and entertaining.

Five stars. If you have anyone with any level of popular art/film/animation/graphic design interest on your Christmas list, I'd bear this book in mind.

These Winnie-The-Pooh CD are wonderful stories for your children and for the parents to enjoy as well. AA Milne had an amazing ability to capture characters. The Disney cartoons from yore were great, but the original text of Milne is even better. Humorous and clean and adventurous for small children, but also enough tongue-in-cheek character development to entertain the parents as well. There are probably many different recordings of this classic set, but I specifically recommend this recording, narrated by Alan Bennett.

Best Narration for the Beloved Bear

We had these books on tape several years ago for our older kids, so when we added a baby this year we knew that the cd's had to be found for him. We looked all over for them, and were so happy to finally find them on Amazon! Peter Dennis is the perfect narrator for the Pooh stories (the real Christopher Robin certainly agreed!), so even though we found the books on cd by other narrators before finding these, we chose to wait until the Peter Dennis set could be found. He does such a wonderful job on the voices of the characters, and he switches back and forth so naturally and smoothly that he makes listening to the books a true pleasure. Not only are the cds soothing and fun to listen to for the baby and for the kids, but they're also fun and nostalgic to listen to for the parents. They aren't annoying to listen to like a lot of other kid-oriented cds can be.

If you're looking to give your child some listening enjoyment that won't hype him or her up with too much craziness, and you love the classic beloved Pooh Bear, then these are for you!

Thank you to NH Kuhn and Normandie Alleman for providing with an advanced copy of this book so I could bring you this review. Poor Little Daddies Girl by Normandine Alleman had me cracking up laughing at some of Charmaine’s and Hunter’s dialog. Who says, “Who peed in your Cheerio’s?” My favorite line was “You know you’re about as much fun as a colonoscopy with no drugs.” Charmaine is your typical wealthy, spoiled brat who gets into trouble and is only famous to be famous. She is lonely, on a destructive path, and dates all the wrong men for her. That is until Hunter a hunky firefighter rescues her from her apartment fire. The apartment is not the only thing that sparks a flame! I love how Normadie describes all the naughty scenes between the two characters. As they say firefighters find them hott and leave them wet! That is exactly what these two characters did! Poor Little Daddies Girl by Normadie Alleman gets 4 out of 5 hot steamy kisses from me.

This is by far the best book of the series so far. A definite keeper. The first two where ok I liked them. This one goes the extra mile as it were. There's a few things I started to say, but I back spaced I HATE SPOILERS. The voice reader or whatever you call them was good as well.

Best One So Far!

Right where do I begin apart from saying THANK YOU NORMANDIE!!! This book is her best so far and written so well.
So let me begin my review of this deliciously hot addictive read and I mean oh my god this is smoking hot that even I felt like fanning myself hehe
I've always said that Daddy's Game by Normandie was my go to for a naughty read and that it was my favourite but Natron and Carmen...you gotta go!! Because there is a new couple in town and they are taking over everything!
In this book we have the very 'oh god lord' handsome Hunter, he is a firefighter we met in Daddy's game and he is also the big gorgeous hero who saved Charmaine after she was a very careless naughty girl!! I will continue about Hunter but first can I just say that I think Hunter is the best Daddy so far!! Just putting that out there lol
This book had me at start to finish and it's my favourite one now because these two made me laugh and made me blush but also made me weep.

Hunter firefighter with a taste for dominance in the bedroom, but never found someone who he could be his true self with but he is also kind and funny, he is someone you can trust and he would never lead you down the wrong path. Along with all of that is his mouth is like a sailor at sea hehe he is a very crude talking dirty man!!

Charmaine is a rich spoilt party girl who mainly loves to drink and do all the wrong things for herself but her love for her close friends is lovely to read, she cares so deeply for them and that is enough to call family but she is missing out on one thing and that is companionship!
I wasn't a big fan of her in Daddy Morebucks but in this one I loved her, now I know what's happened and reading her thoughts and feelings, I've seen her in a different light and I think she should get all the happiness in the world.

All in all, this is a great read for anyone who has all different kinks up their alley, Normandie done it again and wrote a brilliant book and one that will be my go to. I can't wait to read more by her.

BEST gift to buy for the OT in your life; Practical text for the OT and his/her patients

As both an occupational therapist and medical librarian, I highly recommend this book for therapists and libraries with rehabilitation programs. This is the practical text that the OT needs for working in the field. The author also sells a digital edition on her website with ADDED Spanish materials--it's worth the extra $20 to get it. IF YOU'RE LOOKING TO BUY A GIFT for an OT friend or family member, this is the first resource I would recommend. The book has treatment guides, patient education handouts, patient exercise handouts, and much more! One of the many things I like about this book it that it shows with clear illustrations and text the donning AND doffing of clothes with adaptive equipment and compensatory techniques. Other resources out there show how to put on clothing with the hemiplegia (one-handed) technique or adaptive device, but not how to take clothes off--which is quite important! And, unlike other resources out there, this book has ADL instructions for left AND right hemiplegia, transfers to the left as well as the right, etc.; most resources will show one but not the other. There are also instructions on lower body dressing while sitting on a couch, in a chair, and supine in bed, again, something I haven't seen elsewhere. The chapters include sections on Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs), Interventions (on various topics such as home modification, balance, and apraxia), and Conditions & Diseases (like Alzheimer's Disease & its various stages, epicondylitis, depression, rotator cuff repair, stroke, and more). The OT Toolkit clearly illustrates transfer technique (in/out of bed, on/off toilet, etc.), which is helpful for both patient and caregiver when the patient goes home. The author also provides ADL tips and life hacks, and written and pictorial checklists of adaptive equipment by ADL, which the OT can provide to the patient and/or caregiver. There are precautions and guidelines, and valuable lists such as the Hardest/Easiest Functional Vision list, which is handy for helping the OT to develop functional, meaningful activities for the client. I greatly value this book in my daily practice, as do my patients, who benefit from the clear instructions and information I can now provide from this one resource.

This is a must have!! As a COTA student last year
I am a huge fan of your toolkit! Last year I was on my level 2 fieldwork when I found myself scrambling to find an occupational therapy based resource. I searched Google many times and every single time your toolkit came up. I mulled over purchasing it because I just couldn't really spare the cash since I was bringing in any income. But, I decided to look at it as an investment and boy am I glad I did. My supervisor was so impressed when I whipped out my professional looking exercise program to give my patients! Today I am a licensed COTA and I still use the toolkit to provide my patients with exercise packets and other very intervention ideas. I am the advertisement for the toolkit I recommend it to all the therapist and occupational therapy students I know! I have even added it to my OT survival Pinterest board!!! Side bar: I ran into a former patient of mine yesterday and guess what she had in her purse!! The exercise programs I provided from the OT toolkit! She says she does them everyday!!! If you are a student or a family member of someone in the OT field looking for an invaluable resource get the toolkit!! I love it!!! and use it on a daily basis!!

Steve Brown and his wife, Diane, have been missionaries to Argentina and have also served in the ministry in Boston, Los Angeles, and Dallas. They now live in the Nashville area, where Steve is a teacher in the Greater Nashville Church.
